Nimaru — The Problem With Being A Brony

Description This is the first version:

Many people talked about the text being too small and I thought it was pretty crowded and scattered (though I still think it was a good first attempt). So to make a better poster, I condensed the crap out of it, both in text and in images to make essentially the same points but with less space, more pictures, and fewer words. I also uploaded a MUCH larger version so you guys can print your own though I DO have it available as prints over at Redbubble:

Buy it here if you like it
POSTER @ REDBUBBLE: [link]

Anyway, I think it turned out really well so what do you think?

EDIT: Cheeseheads are Green Bay Packers fans (football) and the Blue Army are fans of Aerosmith

EDIT2: A lot of people today have commented that they can't believe that anyone would consider KH girly, but it's been more than a decade since it came out so many people forgot or were too young to remember. It's a "Disney Princess" game that uses the word "heart" a lot and has touchy feely "I LOVE YOU MAN" bromance between the main characters. Obviously it's awesome, but I've seen guys who couldn't get past that and wouldn't play the game.

Well, My Little Pony isn't for everyone, but at least you did watch an episode. That's more than most people who talk about how "bad" it is. I can accept that.

Short version: the art and the lore are what inspired me. It's a neat world with a lot of neat concepts that inspired me artistically.

I think that isn't really an issue if you haven't played the MGS. I mean you're not automatically all knowing. I haven't played the MGS series yet, so I barely know anything about it.

It's when you get judged for liking MGS that it's a bitch. Not when someone is ignorant of it.

Or something like that...

Heyriel In reply to ??? [2013-05-21 09:38:54 +0000 UTC]

I agree with all but point Nr. 1: A woman is not automatically considered 'cool' if she likes 'boys stuff'. Especially when it comes to video games, you will very often hear that 'Women can't play video games' or even 'Women only say they play video games to be cool'. To the point where the female demographic is balantly ignored when designing new games. Same with most game/music/movie/comic merchandise: It's not uncommon for women wearing, for example, Iron Man shirts to be accused of only wearing it because it's 'trendy'. (I won't even get started on the whole Cosplay issue.)
Women who like 'manly' things are often called gay (as in: 'Must be a lesbian') and seen as freaks. -same as with men who like 'girly' stuff, there really is not much of a difference.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Nimaru In reply to Heyriel [2013-05-21 16:31:09 +0000 UTC]

I played it that way because on average, people will think it's cool if a girl watches football with everyone else or can talk intelligently about cars or tech. If I guy can name more than one broadway show, he's a fruit and must be hanged from the nearest tree.

You're definitely not wrong, but I think it's more accepted for girls. Or at the least, they've been in the issue for longer and there's more acceptance while the guy's liking girl things has never been this public before. That's my view of it anyway.

Sonic-chaos In reply to Heyriel [2013-05-21 15:47:13 +0000 UTC]

It is still slightly more acceptable.

I'm kind of concerned about Ohmu porn. I kind of hoped that did not exist.
All the bronies and pegasisters are awesome people, at least the ones I met. It wasn't so long ago that little girls were ostracised for liking FPS! Time to return the favour of acceptance and sharing of awesomeness.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nimaru In reply to Tsuki-Spartaness [2013-05-21 16:28:52 +0000 UTC]

You got it. Girls are still mocked for liking "boy things" and guys are mocked for liking "girl things". It's not cool.

Tsuki-Spartaness In reply to Nimaru [2013-05-22 07:09:47 +0000 UTC]

So not cool, but it'll go away with time I think. Once people become more accepting of these sorts of things. Early days yet!

Everything else in this thing I can agree with, except one thing.

Boys can`t play Kingdom Hearts 2? That is insane!

And yeah, I myself accept bronies as long as they don`t force it down my throat.

KH - Heart, Princesses, bromance, feelings and friendship. Not manly. Yes, no one thinks like that now, but some did 11 years ago when it first came out.

Even as a little kid, there was always a "does not compute" contradiction between someone being a fringe geek, who knows a card game's stats, and a completely normal, mainstream guy who knows a sports team's status. It's a complete, 100% society-manufactured mentality.

As for fandom, my rule of thumb is this- enjoy something, talk about it, buy it, spread it if you want, but keep your objective mind in tact. The subject of your affection doesn't care about you, you're not it's family member, you're not on it's "team". You should not feel a need to defend it or debate on it's behalf.

Nimaru In reply to Adresude [2013-05-21 16:26:57 +0000 UTC]

As a forum friend once told me, it's hard to not be defensive when you're constantly under attack. It's not about "feeling the need to defend it" it's about standing up for yourself against ignorance and hate. Have you ever been called an autistic child rapist for being a fan of something before? I have.

ok i get that everyone likes there own thing but why MLP? i watched it and its not that great in my opinion, how can you get past all the childish things like the names (applejack?) dont get me wrong i watch a lot of kids shows like avatar and adventure time but is there even one male character in the show? and chamo hunting gear is not a "costume" it is a necessity for hunting and is completely logical to wear.

Nimaru In reply to sharlexplosion [2013-05-23 05:02:16 +0000 UTC]

It's natural to assume that MLP would be sappy, girly, nonsense based on the fact that it always had been. But I usually like to remind people that the fact that a huge segment of the male population suddenly liking the new show is far more indicative that the show changed for the better rather than men around the world suddenly going nuts.

Sonic-chaos In reply to sharlexplosion [2013-05-21 15:51:22 +0000 UTC]

... Applejack is named after an alcoholic drink... how is that childish?
Also is a good show that is not for everyone, it has good writing (most of the time) and part of the charm is the childish things. It also depends what episode you watched because some of them are really hit or miss. That's the short explanation
If you don't mind me asking which episodes did you watch?

jamsoda In reply to sharlexplosion [2013-05-21 09:35:08 +0000 UTC]

youre being too close minded. Yes, their are male characters in the show, but not many, not that it matters. And all the characters have names based around who they are. AppleJack likes apples, Fluttershy is shy, PinkyPie parties, RainbowDash dashes and Rarity is of rare beauty. If you actually look deeper, youde see that MLP actually a work of art with its story telling and wholesome morals it teaches.
But if you have to ask why, then MLP probably isnt for you. If it has to be explained, its probably best you just never get into it.

This is pretty good, and it addresses alot of points, and misconceptions of MLP fans.
You especially hit the nail on the "double-standards" with cartoons.

People act like girls are "cool," if they like a "cool guy cartoon" like "Transformers," or "Ninja Turtles," or if they like "manly" stuff, and yet if a guy likes a "girl cartoon" like MLP:FiM, regardless how "good" it is, then "something must be wrong with him," or "they must be less of a man."

👍: 0 ⏩: 4

Persephone1980 In reply to Beau-Skunk [2013-05-21 18:38:27 +0000 UTC]

Please.
I really feel for my Brony Brethren. My younger brother being one I've seen what you go through. And I know some fear for their physical safety, which is all kinds of fucked up. But don't act like you're the only ones shoved in a gender box.

This week alone I've had one girl tell me she was told only boys watch Doctor Who, heard from at least three who got shit for liking the Marvel movies, and I myself have been getting more hostility from guys in comic book stores than I would've assumed, probably because they assume I only like the books because the guys in the movie are hot. A girl whose blog I follow was questioned by a male store employee about her love of "Avengers Assemble" because it was a "Boy Comic".
Plus the constant abuse girl gamers get. When Left 4 Dead on XBox live was still new, half the guys would shoot you when they realized you were a girl (or kill Zoey on general principle regardless of who was playing her) or on the other side constant sexual advances, which is really annoying when you just want to kill zombies. I've seen "girls can't be gamers" more than I want to think about.

And then on the other side(read, other women)we're told that if we like girly things like MLP or Hello Kitty that we're terrible modern women who've been brainwashed by the patriarchal society, and we should hate all girly things or we can't be taken seriously and are hurting the feminist movement. My friends all judge me for liking this cutesy children's show and being "too girly".

We're all in the same boat, hon.
