Description Another one of ~Unicron666 's swords. This one was more loosely based on his design than the others, but I think it works a little better this way.

Original sketch: Sword of leaping Demon
Final design outline: Sword of the Soaring Dragon

Update: Added a tail to the hilt, and adjusted the knuckle guard somewhat. Also changed the red background to white, adjusted the lighting and exposure, and tilted the camera up a little to get a better view of the hilt.

Maybe I'll re-make it soon, I'm not happy with the textures on most of it. Thanks!

It's so hard to find decent scratched metal textures though...

Why would you fint them ?
You should UVmap the model and make the texture and bumpmap in Photoshop instead.

Actually, NVIDIA has a Photoshop plugin for making a bumpmap from a texture. If you use CS3, at least.

The blade itself looks fine, except from the texture, the scratches look somewhat wrong, and it's a bit too reflective. The handle, however, doesn't look very good. And how would you hold the sword with a part of the blade going that close to it ?

Tr1ckY547 In reply to Nimphious [2008-11-30 21:06:20 +0000 UTC]

It looks much better now.

But I think the scratches would be around the edge of the sword instead of all over it. And a bit more random.

JuBbEr2005 In reply to Tr1ckY547 [2008-12-04 09:50:49 +0000 UTC]

It depends, how you're blocking, with the scratches, for example, if they lunge at you, and you have a wide blade, you'd use the flat, to block like a shield, rather than swipe blindly, and end up impaled, just saying.

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-04 19:30:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, it would still get scratched from your own slashes at them. Therefore, it would look more realistick with random scratches along the edge, and the others wouldn't necessarily hit the exact same angle all the time.

I know that, but it's simple computer generation, not everyone has the processor speed, the computer capacity, nor the sheer ability to pull off the graphics from modern movies, let alone games graphics, I think it's well done regardless of the fact it doesn't look 100% real, sure, the bumpmap's a little y'know, but hey, the rest is really well done, the hilt, is awesome, regardless of the guard, it looks like a good "Zanpakuto" from Bleach, I'd weild that, it'd fit well with my character, too.

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-05 16:33:45 +0000 UTC]

Computer generated textures is not a valid excuse.
You use Photoshop for that.

JuBbEr2005 In reply to Tr1ckY547 [2008-12-09 15:11:24 +0000 UTC]

No, what I meant it, some computers, can't handle it, I mean, my computer crashes if I have two tabs open on the internet, it also crashes if I open up MS paint, so it's not a matter of what programs you have, it's what your computer can handle, I've made textures before, no, it's not hard, or impossible, however, if your computer can't handle it, then you can't do much better than pretty much standard effects, you can't go past what your computer's maximum allows, because that's just impossible, let alone implausible, and if you somehow managed to, then you'd create a paradox, causing the universe to implode upon itself destroying everything in existence, because making something go well beyond it's physical limits, tends to have that effect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-10 21:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, nothing more than those standard effects is actually needed in a texture. It just has to be done properly.

JuBbEr2005 In reply to Tr1ckY547 [2008-12-17 16:57:22 +0000 UTC]

I repeat, not everyone has the computer capabilities, to do such a thing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-17 23:02:05 +0000 UTC]

If you have the computer capabilities to model stuff in 3D, you have the capabilities to make textures in Photoshop or Gimp, since 3D requires more power.
Therefore, your argument is invalid.

JuBbEr2005 In reply to Tr1ckY547 [2008-12-18 17:24:22 +0000 UTC]

God, I fucking hate IGNORANT idiots, people who don't LISTEN really fucking SHIT me, I'll tell you what, you install 3D, you install Photoshop, you try and run EITHER on this thing, and if you can make a really good 3D render, I'll pay you a million fucking dollars, UNTIL THEN LISTEN TO WHAT I SAY "IF YOU COMPUTER IS INCAPABLE OF HANDLING THE STRESS OF A VERY RAM HUNGRY PROGRAM SUCH AS PHOTOSHOP OR ANY 3D PROGRAM, AND YOU TRY TO RUN MORE THAN ONE AT A TIME, IT IS NO DOUBT GOING TO CRASH AND MOST LIKELY FRY, THAT IS WHAT I MEAN BY COMPUTER CAPABILITIES, NOT SKILL!"

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-19 14:32:35 +0000 UTC]

First off, lay off the caps lock, I can read your messages without it.
Now, pay me a million fucking dollars (they have to fuck each other, let it be a massive orgy, please), a good render doesn't rely on computer power, just render settings. The CPU power just makes it faster or slower, depending on the CPU.
Also, like Kosai said, I never even mentioned running both Photoshop and 3Ds Max at once, even though I do it very often, while running games at the same time, since my computer is powerful enough.

That being said, I didn't say the textures had to be high-res, though it would, indeed be better than 512x512 textures.
Now, if you can run any 3D program, you can run Photoshop.
Hell, my laptop (266Mhz Pentium 2, 128MB RAM, 2MB 2D graphics card) can run Photoshop CS3 just fine, as long as I stick to pictures below 1024x1024.

Now, what does the processor speed have to do with anything except rendering faster or slower ?
Up until now, all your arguments have been invalid.

Like I said, my computer crashes with MS paint, and ONLY MS paint, this thing, wouldn't handle any of those programs, switching back and forth between photoshop, and 3D is a pain, so most people who aren't actually doing their work for monetary value, rather, to show someone their idea of what they think something should look like, shouldn't have to be "PS3 graphics omg!!!" maybe, people want to render something BADLY, just to show a CONCEPT, and if they were to SELL their work, then they'd take time to do the very detailed materials, I mean, I didn't even make materials for my classwork, and my teacher gave me a very distinguished mark, why, because of CONTENT, not graphics, that's the problem with the world today, everything is all about how great their graphics are, whatever, I'm over this argument, ignorant people shit me.

Tr1ckY547 In reply to JuBbEr2005 [2008-12-21 11:20:23 +0000 UTC]

Then it's time for you to get a new computer, don't you think ?

Also, I think I know how much of a pain switching back and forth between Photoshop and 3Ds Max is, I do that all the time at school.

And yes, a FINAL render should look good, no matter what you say.
Also, the texture is just as important as the model, at the very least, in most cases even more important.

Wow, sometimes I wish dA let you pick whether or not you were notified when other people started getting unnecessarily pissed off at people because they're ignorant idiots. At least you didn't get dragged into the infinite void of anger that he deemed appropriate.

I apologise for him, since he's incapable of intelligent thought when angered or logically confronted, as it seems.

The bump texture is entirely my fault, it looks terrible 'cause every time I went to re-create it in anything over 1024, I had so many other things open that I didn't have enough free memory.

If I do remake it, I'd probably just remove the texture, rather than make a new one, since I'm not very good at it to begin with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tr1ckY547 In reply to Nimphious [2009-01-12 10:27:46 +0000 UTC]

If you remake it, UVmap it and texture it in Photoshop, you can make it much better that way, instead of just making a texture and placing it on the model without doing anything (it looks like you did that).
Nothing more than a 512x512 UVmap is actually needed, you just have to keep away from the high-res renders.
Then add a little scratches, and maybe paint a brushed steel texture like I'm doing on my gunblades (look in my gallery for those, I'll gladly give you some tips if I can).

Also, you shouldn't have to apologise for him, he should do that by himself instead.

That being said, I'd like to try texturing it. You're using 3Ds Max, right ? :3

I hardly get time enough to spend more than an hour or so on anything, really.

I was about to say "Yaaay, weekend, now I can do what I want instead of work." and then realised I'm going to spend the weekend working on a work-related project anyway XD

Usually, I use the night for my projects, and don't sleep. That way I get lots of time for whatever I want to do. :3

No "yay, weekend" for me, just "yay, more playtime". ^^
