An eastern kaftan loosely based on some finds from the viking age. The decorative trim is tablet woven. The buttons are sand-casted bronze.Material: wool, linen, bronze

Todella hyvän näköinen. Olen yleensä karstastanut ajatusta keltaisesta väristä viikinkiaikaisissakin vaatteissa, mutta täytyy sanoa että se sopii tuohon kaftaaniin loistavasti. Miten kankaan leikkaaminen eroaa ns. tavallisen tunikan kankaan leikkaamisesta, jos saan kysyä?

Kiitos, noh ei sinäänsä se ei eroa mitenkään paljoa. Edessähän nuo "takin" liepeet menevät jossain määrin päällekäin ja takana on ns. ratsastushalkiot, mutta muutenhan toi on simppelin tunikan mallinen.

Hyvän näköinen kokonaisuus. Nuo idänretkillä syntyneet vaatemallit on muutenkin enemmän mun makuun kuin vaikka Itämeren länsipuolelle tyypilliset tunikat/takit.
Olen suunnitellut itsekin vähän tuon tyyppisen kaftaanin tekoa, koska tällä hetkellä on kaapista löytyy vain yksi tylsä tehdastekoinen viikinkitunika. (Omaan tulee kuitenkin erilainen väriskaala ja mahdollisesti jonkinlaiset metallisoljet tai hakaset nappien tilalle.) Juuri nyt on työn alla myös vyö ja siihen kiinnitettävä laukku, mutta ne eivät perustuu mihinkään vanhaan löytöön, vaan kehittelin lähinnä omia yhdistelmiä rautakautisista koristeaiheista.

Not in any common way. There may have been some local traditions, but there's not much known about that subject. Propably not.

You were confined by what you could afford. You had to have the money to own a pot devoted to dyeing, the time to gather the dyestuffs and mordants, or the money to pay for them. Ditto tablet weave.
The majority of dyeplants in Northern Europe and western Russia yield some shade of yellow or yellowy-green, so yellow was probably a pretty commonly-seen colour. Only a handful of plants give a good red, and they require quite specific growing conditions, so a good red could be quite expensive. Blue came from woad, and to get a shade of blue as dark as those trousers would take approximately a year's work. Very posh indeed!
