Description

Just wanted to share a build write-up of my Destiny Warlock costume if anyone is curious:

Helmet – For the base of my helmet I have used a pepakura 3D model designed and unfolded by TheRPF user FloatingFatman.  After putting together the pieces on cardstock paper with the help of my friend I have added two layers of fiberglass resin and coating the inside of the helmet with fiberglass cloth to reinforce the structure for the steps that followed. Next up was adding several layers of bondo and sanding it to remove any imperfections on the surface. This step took the longest. To fill in some of the smaller holes on the surface I used a few layers of primer spray paint. Finally the helmet was finished with adding small details from craft foam, painting and weathering. A few additional layers of foam were added to the inside of the helmet for a comfortable wear and a precise fit. I also wear a black spandex headmask with the helmet to cover my face.

Belts, Straps, Pouches – These pieces are made from dyed vegetable tanned leather. First I cut out all my templates in foam and once I was happy with the test fit I proceeded to cut the shapes from leather as well. I strongly recommend cutting in thin craft foam first so you are not wasting leather if any adjustments need to be made. I then proceeded to tool in a variety of small design onto the straps such as the Warlock class logo (seen on the upper front).  After tooling I dyed all the pieces with a mix of Range Tan and Bison Brown leather dye with a little bit of antiquing gel rubbed on before sealing it with Super Shene and distressing it with sandpaper. The last step was the assembly for which I mostly used a variety of rivets, snaps and small buckles.

Shoulderpad - My shoulderpad is made entire of foam. For the base I used a thicker EVA while the small details were cut out from the thinner craft foam sheets and glued on. I have covered the piece in a few layers of spray paint specifically for priming and filling foam pieces (I can’t remember the brand name). Once I was done with that I painted, weathered and attached the shoulder piece to the belt assembly using small leather strips and snaps.

Robe: For the robe I used a navy blue and a brown linen fabric found at joanns and I have ordered some silver quilted insulation padding material from Fabrics.com. The coat was made essentially like 2 whole robe piece and after a rigorous process of lining up the two sides finally sown together. Coat turned out to be very warm so I couldn’t wear the costume too long at the con but it will be practical when I need to shovel snow this winter.  For the undershirt I wore a grey long sleeve that covered my neck and parts of my arm that weren’t covered by the robe and the gauntlets

Rifle – For my rifle I took an old Nerf gun, disassembled it and sanded down its surface. I removed some of the frivolous pieces and inside components and spray painted the parts. After reassembling it I stenciled in the vanguard logo, weathered it with silver rub n buff and some black acrylic paint. The straps are made from leather as well using the technique described above.

Arms – I wore black paintball gloves on my hands purchased online while the base of my armguard is made of dyed vegetable tanned leather (the process described in an entry above). The yellow/silver wrist guard piece sitting on top was sculpted flat, molded, and cast in resin. I folded it to shape over a piece of worbla while it was curing. After painting, I used gorilla glue to attach it to the leather arm piece.

I borrowed a pair of motor- cross boots from a coworker while the awesome Ghost came with the Destiny Ghost Edition box. Not much crafting there hahaha!

I literally made a deviantart to get guidance from you lol. I am a noob when it comes to sewing and I really wanted to cosplay my warlock character as well. Any advice on how to create the coat? I was thinking a trench jacket, but I wasn't to sure. I never sewn a jacket before so I have no idea where to start -_-".

Btw your cosplays are amazing!!!!

hey! welcome to deviant art. My best suggestion for the warlock is actually take a pattern (like the ones from simplicity) and slightly modifiy that to get it similar to whichever design you have in mind. Mine was based on my previous costume actually (another robe) that was based on a women's fall fashion coat.

If I was looking to make the warlock coat myself, what would be a good pattern to modify/start from? Something like a trench coat maybe?

that could probably work. But look at some of the female winter coat patterns in your nearest fabric store ... you may find some good ones there 2 (thats what i used as my base)

Did you happen to use a pattern for the coat? If so which one?
