It doesn't work with me
I have 3dsmax 2009 and in my render settings i have a lot of mental ray, which one i have to choose?
I have follow your tutorial but all render is black and my object doesn't appear...
I know nothing about 3dsmax so i am unable to find the solution by myself.
if you or someone have the time to answer my question, it could be realy nice

that glowing shadow was most probably done in post. i made a copy of the layer and applied gaussian blur and changed the blending mode to screen.

wut material did u use for the floor plane? my object looks fine but the plane just reflect way too much of my hdr environment map...

m using a standard shader with reflection/refraction set to zero (Black)

Glass lume, mental ray and photon basic is incopatble, why?

bloodspit In reply to NixenTanar [2008-07-13 14:18:26 +0000 UTC]
because you dont have mental ray turned on as your default renderer. Go to render settings.

Heh, took me 2 tries to get this working...
You need to tell people that a normal spotlight is different then an MR one, as many people don't even know there are 2 separate lights!
Aside from that, good tutorial!

btw i think the tutorial is good for the materials but the light setup could use more discussion.

try increasing the photon count...and enable CAUSTICS in object properties.

when you've added the light, remember to check the box "shadows on"
