About 12” by 15” Blue and white acrylic ink on coloured paper.

Conceptual portrait of Doug Jones for illustration class. I hope the concept behind it is pretty obvious, if you know the guy. But you might not, so here’s the story. Doug Jones is an actor/contortionist known for his roles as creatures in film. Abe Sapien in Hellboy, the Pale Man and the Faun in Pan’s Labyrinth, and many more. Of course, he’s a wonderful actor in his own right, whether or not he’s costumed, and I have the utmost respect and admiration for him. Anyway, in case it’s not clear, the costumes/roles are depicted as living skins, peeling away in the process of molting. I wanted to give it a wet, visceral but also ethereal look.

Hadn’t attempted to paint anything in a good long time, not usually my cup of tea, but I actually kind of liked doing this in acrylic ink. I much prefer it to regular acrylic paint, the texture is so nice and smooth.

Oh, and before anyone mentions it, before a snake sheds its skin its eyes glaze over and take on a milky look.
