((Okay, I'll start then~))

Birchkit came to a stop. His grand tour of the Nursery was taking a lot longer than he'd initially anticipated. He wasn't exactly a cat for unnecessary exercise, or unnecessary anything come to think of it - it was in fact a mystery to him why he had set out on this journey at all.

He looked over his shoulder, by now he was at least three nests away from his own, it would take him the same amount of time that it had taken for him to get here to get back.

Deciding that pressing on and going back were both too much work, he opted to sit down right where he was and wait for his exhaustion to wear off, he'd make a decision then.

He held out one of his paws, expecting it carefully. His mother said that a kit must always ensure that they weren't dirty, and he'd just noticed the dirt beginning to show on his paws where he'd been walking. Hesitantly he reached out his tongue to clean the dirt off. It tasted horrible and he spat it out again almost immediately, there must be some sort of secret technique to it, he would endeavor to find out what it was.

"Use the back of your tongue," Kestrelkit offered, noticing the kit having trouble cleaning his paws. "It's rougher back there, and you taste less of it. It also cleans it faster, trust me."

The ginger tabby jumped down out of her nest and padded up to the new kit, sniffing him. He smelled like Quietbrook, and she deduced that he must be one of her new kits. "What's your name?" She asked.

Birchkit nodded his thanks to the other kit, trying again with the back of his tongue. She was right, he could still feel the odd texture of the dirt, but he couldn't taste it anymore.

He finished grooming his paws while the other kit sniffed him. She was taller than him, but not by much. He didn't recognise her scent, but then again, aside from his family he'd never really had the chance to sniff at another cat before.

"Birchkit" he replied to her question, bowing his head carefully and gracefully, despite his stocky appearance, in greeting.

She had rather fancy markings, he couldn't help but think. A grand multitude of colours and patterns, along with a set of sharp looking amber eye that seemed fairly normal.

"Birchkit," Kestrelkit repeated her new Clanmate's name. "Nice to meet you. I'm Kestrelkit. My mother is Barleyleap," she gestured to where the creamy she-cat was curled up in her nest.

Birchkit glanced over at where a kindly looking young she-cat was sleeping. Barleyleap's name sounded vaguely familiar, like he'd heard it being discussed before around the Nursery between the Queens,  but if it was Queen talk then it wasn't something that concerned him - he'd already found that it was usually quite an unreliable way of gathering information.

"It's very nice to meet you," he dipped his head politely, and then added, just in case it was necessary, "my mother is Quietbrook."

Kestrelkit purred, "Quietbrook is very nice. Do you have littermates? I have two!"

"Yes," Birchkit's head perked up a little here, "I'm the eldest of five" he explained, he always had a lot more enthusiasm when he was talking about his little siblings.

"Leopardkit and Puddlekit are rather hyperactive... we tend to avoid each other... Then there's my other sister, Lostkit, she's a bit different I suppose, but she has an interesting character," he saved his favorite until last. "Finchkit's my youngest sibling and my only brother, mum often says that he got the best of our parents and skipped out on all the quirks..." Running to the end of his steam, he fell silent again, tail twitching bashfully, as he dipped his head in apology, just in case he'd gotten too carried away.

"Five littermates!" Kestrelkit breathed in awe. "That's a lot. Sounds like a fun family, I can't wait to meet all of them."

Nodding, he turned back to look at the Nursery, "mum isn't letting the others out at the moment, except myself really and possibly Puddlekit." They were the oldest, so their parents fussed about them less.

The other day when Finchkit had tripped over in the Nursery, Hazefire had practically come down on them like it was Birchkit's fault for not preventing his brother from tripping, the truth was that Birchkit hadn't even seen him coming.

"Puddlekit...she sounds nice." Kestrelkit purred, thinking how responsible Finchkit must be.

"She is" Birchkit agreed carefully, thinking off his sister. She was certainly a pawful and very overexciteable, but he didn't think that any one could describe her as anything but nice and friendly.

"So, what about you, any siblings?" He tilted his head slightly as he asked and then turned it back in the direction of the Nursery, wondering if any of the kits he'd already seen were related to her.

"I don't think I've seen them around" Birchkit admitted, although now he came to think of it, he had seen two other kits with Barleyleap.

He knew that the kits didn't have a father now, which did seem a little odd, but he had enough common sense to know that asking might appear rude, so he held back.

"Your mum seems nice" he said instead.

"Mosskit kind of...keeps to herself," Kestrelkit explained, thinking of her much more timid sister. "Saplingkit is a little more adventurous, but not like me! And my mama's the best!" She purred, always happy to talk about her family, even if it was smaller than most of the other kits' families.

sparkeythehamster In reply to Nixhil [2014-01-05 15:48:29 +0000 UTC]

"Sounds like you have a good family there" Birchkit smiled, he had his own way of smiling, it wasn't big and full like Finchkit's or bright and chirpy like Heatherkit or Leopardkit, and he wasn't sure that he'd ever seen Lostkit smile, so he wasn't sure there. His smile tend to show up in his eyes more than anywhere else, which sometimes made it easy to miss.

He liked to hear about happy families, there was always a nice touch there, and he understood that the reference to Mosskit, was like him referring to his sister, it didn't mean that he didn't love her, they were simply different.

Kestrelkit purred happily when Birchkit praised her family. "They're fun. Are your littermates fun, too?"

Laughing lightly, Birchkit didn't nod, certain that he could get his answer into his worded reply, "They've all got a lot of energy, Puddlekit and Leopardkit couldn't stay still if their life depended on it, and Finchkit will happily play with anybody willing, and if you ever meet Puddlekit, whatever she says I'm sure she'd be up for a game if you offered one."

In many ways he was the odd one out in his family, play fighting didn't come easily to him, as he was worried about hurting his younger siblings, and chasing each other around looked so exhausting that he wasn't all that keen to try it.

sparkeythehamster In reply to Nixhil [2014-01-13 08:08:25 +0000 UTC]

"Not really" Birchkit told her, "at least I enjoy some games" he admitted, "I made a snow cat once," he had quite enjoyed that, even if it had taken a while and quite a bit of his energy, but he had been proud with the results.

He would of course play any game his brother wanted him too, and usually he enjoyed that simply because Finchkit seemed so happy while he was jumping off a low rock into the snow or skidding across the ground to see how far he would go.

Birchpaw balanced as best he could on his hind-legs so that he could motion with his forepaws, "it's like a cat made of snow, you use pebbles and twigs for the eyes and whiskers."

Dropping back down he pulled some of the snow towards him, rounding it with his paws to make a small circle shape, "you shape the snow like this, except make it much bigger," he pushed the ball of snow gently towards her.

Kestrelkit scoped the snow towards herself more, rounding it out a bit. "Oh, so like, a cat made of snow for real." she giggled. "How clever."

"Well..." Birchkit looked around with embarrassment at her praise, "it always has to be a white cat though" he mumbled, "although you can sort of draw stripes and markings on if your really careful not to break the snow apart."

He reached out his paw to the ball of snow again, releasing one of his claws, concentrating hard and being very careful as he scratched some markings into it to show her.

Kestrelkit shook her head, "That's fine! White cats are cool. Like SnowClan cats." She'd often heard the queens discussing this distant-sounding Clan.

She peered closely at the snow cat as Birchkit etched a design into the chilly white snow.

"Yeah I suppose" Birchkit agreed, thinking of the cats he knew that were white, there was Softclaw of course, in the Nursery, Springkit was sort of white, and he'd seen a few others around the camp, they mostly tended to be she-cats he'd noted, apart from Springkit, although he wasn't entirely white anyway.

He began scooping the snow into a mound, "the body has to be circular but pointed at the end" he explained. For some reason this part was always his favorite, he liked the amount of time and concentration he had to put into each pat and movement of his paws, to ensure he didn't damage the shape.

Patting the snow together, he began looking around for more.

"Perhaps you could start the head and we can roll it onto the top together when I've finished the body" he suggested, wondering where they could find some decorations for the face. He supposed that while he was scooping up the snow that he might find a few stones they could use. Twigs always seemed to be the best thing for the whiskers though.

"Good idea," Kestrelkit giggled, rolling some snow into a smaller ball, slowly making it big enough to find suitable for a head. It was lopsided, and Kestrelkit tried her best to smooth it out, but she wasn't as adept with her paws on the snowy figure as Birchkit was.

Pausing between shaping and molding the body with his paws, Birchkit glanced over at Kestrelkit. The head looked like it was a rather... peculiar shape - he didn't want to tell her that though, after all, he wasn't some sort of expert on making snowcats.

"Looks good" he commented instead, turning back to his own job.

"Oh... yeah sure," a little awkwardly and ever so slightly flustered at the idea of someone asking for his help, Birchkit moved around, carefully examining the shape, placing his paws on it, careful not to break the shape that she had.

"Watch" he told her, brushing his paws very carefully over one side of the shape, smoothing down the uneven parts with his paws, rounding the shape so that it was a little pointed on either side rather than being a complete circle, "you try," he gave her an encouraging and uneven smile, hoping it would have the right effect.

Kestrelkit smiled, trying the same technique that Birchkit had done. The snow seemed to mold a bit more easily to her touch, to her pleasure. "It's working," she breathed happily, the cold air catching her breath in mid-air for a bit. "Thanks!"

"Looks good" Birchkit complimented, and indeed she had followed his instructions very carefully. Building a good Snowcat took time and patience, the kind that most kits didn't seem to have, okay perhaps Sootkit had it.

"Are you an older sibling?" He asked after a moment of consideration - this sort of control and calmness usually only came from older siblings that felt they had younger ones to look out for. He knew Kestrelkit had two siblings, but he wasn't sure what order they'd all been born in.

PatchyFallenstar In reply to sparkeythehamster [2014-02-07 03:31:31 +0000 UTC]

"Actually, Mosskit and I were born at the same time, so technically no one is older!" Kestrelkit purred as she pawed at the snowcat more. "Saplingkit was brought in later...I don't know if he's technically older or younger than me but he'll always be my baby brother."

sparkeythehamster In reply to PatchyFallenstar [2014-02-07 20:22:25 +0000 UTC]

"Oh I didn't know that," Birchkit had always just assumed that Barleyleap had given birth to all three of the kits, but obviously he'd been mistaken. So by actual relation Kestrelkit only had her sister, they were quite a small family now he really thought about it, just their mother and the two of them, plus Saplingkit of course.

Birchkit knew he had quite a lot of kin in Moonclan, as well as his siblings and parents. He'd already worked out that he was related to Dizzykit and Pecankit; despite being born a Loner, his mother certainly seemed to have a large family here.

While he sometimes found it a little tiring, Birchkit was glad that he had such a large family.

"It looks good" Birchkit nodded, pushing some of the miscellaneous items he'd found towards her,  "now we can give them features," he looked down at his sorry collection, it was going to be hard giving this poor snowcat a real face with only a pebble, a couple of twigs and some moss that he'd found stuffed behind the Nursery.

"Would this work?" Birchkit nudged the pebble forwards - he had been thinking about using pebbles for the eyes, but seeing as he'd only found one that would have to do. Kestrelkit seemed to be really starting to enjoy this now, so he was happy to take a step back and let her decorate the Snowcat's face in whatever way made her happiest.

Birchkit looked around at the collection at his paws, eyes were going to be hard. "How about this?" He suggested, leaning forwards to hollow out some eyes for the snowcat with his claw.

He made the first hole and it didn't look so bad, so he went for the other. However, the moment he inserted his claw into the snow he caught sight of that side of the head beginning to slip - swinging out his other paw, Birchkit tried to hold the snowcat together, but the other side was beginning to collapse now too.

Oh Starclan!

He struggled for a little longer to keep the snowcat together, but eventually was forced to admit that he'd ruined it, Kestrelkit was probably going to be furious, or worse, upset.

"I am so sorry" he apologized, turning around so there wasn't too much delay, "I'll help you build another, this... I... I'm such an idiot."

Kestrelkit flattened her ears, saddened that their hard work fell apart so easily. She tried to keep her voice light, "Oh, it's alright, we can do another. It's no big deal," she purred, trying to lift Birchkit's spirits. "You're not an idiot. It's just snow, after all...it's bound to fall apart."

He blinked, glancing down at the ground as he caught sight of her ears drooping, despite the light tone in her voice.

"It's getting warmer" he mumbled instead, glancing up at the sky, he hoped it didn't sound like he was trying to shift the blame to the steadily growing stronger sun.

It was still cold of course, but he'd seen Warriors and Apprentices returning to camp with more prey than before, so something must be changing.

"That's true, I'm sure if it was colder it wouldn't fall apart so easily." Kestrelkit perked her ears, nodding at this observation. "I wonder what camp is like without snow...Mama tells me all the time that there's only snow during LeafBare, isn't that weird?" She had of course been born before the snow set in, but she didn't really remember such a time.

"Yeah" Birchkit agreed, "I was born a few weeks after the snow came, that's what mum told me, although from what I can gather only the oldest kits know what it looks like here when the snow is gone."

It was becoming easier to imagine now that the weather seemed to be warming and the once thick white snow that had covered the ground to levels above his head, was now thinner, only up to half-way up his leg in the deepest of places.

"I suppose there must be other wonderful things like snow in New-Leaf, I'm curious to see what they are too, aren't you?" He turned curiously to Kestrelkit, wondering if there was anything she was hoping would happen with New-Leaf.

"My mum said that they come in all different colours, even ones like blue and yellow, maybe even red."

During his time in Moonclan over the freezing Leafbare, Birchkit had never really imagined that such vivid colours in large quantities were actually possible, but if Quietbrook's stories were true, then he was very much looking forward to Newleaf.

Also if he had his counting right, then he would be made an Apprentice at the end of the season, just in time for Greenleaf, it seemed like a good time to start, although Kestrelkit who was due to become an Apprentice very soon would have an even better one, training through the warmer months sounded like great fun.
