Description Hey guys! Long time no post!

I got the okay to post some pictures of one of the latest projects I worked on and I wanted to share. This is a 2-in-1 mini-bust of Marvel Comics characters Cloak and Dagger done for Bowen Designs. I felt very fortunate to be able to work on this as not only am I a huge fan of the characters, but I was also able to base it on the Cloak and Dagger painting I made a few years ago. So it was just a big nerd dream come true for me.

It was also a bit of a logistical nightmare as well just because of all of the stuff crammed into one piece - Two figures (one male, one female, one black, one white) big flowing cloak, bunch of twisted souls within the cloak, and all balanced together on a single base… YIKES! I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out but I was sweating bullets the entire time.

Hope you guys like it!

1/8th scale mini-bust of Cloak and Dagger to be produced by Bowen Designs, Inc.

Wow! Just look at the shadows it casts. Now that is awesome. Wow! I always liked those guys, and the sculpture captures them effortlessly. Flawless to the base it stands on.

I know you have a lot of comments to sift through, but I really wanted to say how awesome this is. I'm a huge C&D fan, and I'm so glad they're gaining popularity again.

Any idea when Bowen Designs are going to be releasing the bust?

Thank you so much! C&D have always been a couple of my favorite characters as well so I can't tell you how stoked I was to get to do this piece. It probably won't be available until around October or so.

I shall have to save my pennies and be patient then! I can tell you, though, this is definitely a bust I'm going to get for my comic collection!

Thank you so much for it! It really is amazing.

I just have no words....the level of difficulty this piece displays is mind boggling.....the fingers, the muscles in both their stomachs, every little detail...it's amazing. I think the fingers impress me the most. i know how difficult it is to refine such a small surface....there's always the possibility of cracking off a few bits which would have been disastrous to the piece.

Seriosuly, this is just beautiful.

Thank you so very much! Yes the hands were an absolute pain to do at this size but I think it all turned out fairly well and was worth the effort.

Definitely worth the effort...I don't know if I would have been able to do it...I shake ever so slightly when I'm nervous. I have done clay sculpture and wax, but with those, if something breaks, you just add more...I don't know what you used, but it looks like stone to me...how do you add to stone...

Very nicely done.
Great detail balanced with motion and expression.
Do you know about how long this piece took you to make?

What materials did you use?

It took about 2 months worth of work from start to finish including multiple revisions by the client.

It's made out of Super Sculpey polymer clay.

I'm really glad you dig it!

Super Sculptey..... I dig THAT ^_^

Where there any preliminary sketches? If so, may I see?
Where the initial measurements by the commissioner difficult, or did you work them out?

What is the main feeling you get when thinking of your work as 'out there and selling'?

Like I may or may not have said, amazing detail and it definately shows your love for the 'craft'.

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to JM2-art [2008-05-04 08:52:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes there were concept sketches done but I'm not at liberty to show them yet. I can only show what I have permission to show and I haven't been given approval for that yet. Essentially though they were just a bunch of variations on this painting I did which was the basic idea that the sculpture was centered on. [link]

The only measurement I had to work with was that the entire piece had to be over 6 inches in overall height which is a stipulation in Bowen's license with Marvel. All mini-busts have to be at least 6 inches and all full size statues have to be at least 12 inches per his Marvel contract. So aside from that all I had to do was keep in mind that it was 1/8th scale, so somone who would be 6 feet tall would end up being about 9 inches tall at that scale.

Knowing that there will be an actual product out there that people can buy that is essentially just my work in a box is a total trip! It'll be fun to walk into stores and see them on the shelves!

Don't you hate when 'they' want to be all secretive....... like 'were' not going to bring more media attention..... but I can kind of understand..... anyway.

Do you know what materials will be used for the bust itself, will they be coloured?
I know what you mean, seeing your things on shelves with a nice price..... hmmm, delicious.

Well..... I hope all goes well for you, I would buy one of those (had I the money) and then I could tell all of my friends, "I actually taked to the artist"..... ^_^

Coolies!

Wow, I have no words to adequately express how incredible that sculpt is. I love the twisted souls and the way she’s coming out of his cape. The balance is just perfect. Bravo!

So what happens next? Does it have to be cut up for molding? Do you have to do that part or Bowen Designs?

Cutting up sculpts is uncharted waters for me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to ebonyraven [2008-05-01 06:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Actually the piece is all cut up as is in the posted pics here. It's all about building the separations of the piece into it's design from the start to make everyone's job easier in the end. So Cloak's head comes off, as do his arms, and Dagger is removable as well.

So I'm not responsible for molding and casting the piece, but I am responsible for sculpting a piece that can be easily molded and casted.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ebonyraven In reply to No-Sign-of-Sanity [2008-05-21 22:00:48 +0000 UTC]

That's awesome. I haven't designed a complicated peice to be casted yet but when I do I think I'll try making and baking each peice seperate starting with the torso first with keys for the rest of the body parts to fit in.

Another method I've heard is to make the armature, put down in the basic shape with clay, bake it, cut/key it and then finish sculpting it and bake it a final time.

What's your process like?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to ebonyraven [2008-05-22 19:55:01 +0000 UTC]

I do it like the second method you mentioned. Sculpt it as a complete statue and take it about 80% to finish, then bake it, cut it up and key it. Then I work on it in pieces and bring each part to finish making sure that I'm constantly checking how it will look when it's all assembled.

If you just start sculpting it in pieces you'll most likey lose some of the energy and power of the piece because you ever get an idea of what the entire thing will look like together intil it's practiacally done. It'll end up kinda stiff and lifeless. Some people can work like that with fantastic results, but it really doesn't work that well for me.

I love their facial expressions and all of the folds in Cloak's...eh, cloak. Also, Dagger's hair is fantastic and all the little faces within are just superb!

Thank you so much znow! Thsi is one of those really cool, but really involved sculpting projects I was telling you about. A bit over my head, but I managed to pull it off in the end.

And strangely somehow I seem to have gotten incredibly popular here latey with like 8000 pageviews in a day and I can't figure out why. I was planning on doing something fun when I hit 100,000 pageviews and I was about 3000 away so I thought I had a few weeks to plan something. Then I get to my computer yesterday and see that I'm a few thousand past the 100K mark? I though maybe I got a DD or something but I still haven't been able to figure out what the hell happened!

I hope they were pleased with these and will we be seeing any ???

thats more than me well you know Walt you are a fantastic artist,so deserve every view you get.I mean just step back for a while at look at your work. You do the stuff people dream off and capture an image of bygone days of comics under the covers with torchlights
So what you could do is prepare for a 150,000pv ahead of time
