Love that kind of quartz...
The offset of the stone I know would bug some people I know, but to me that's what gives it just one more hint of grunge-ness. It's quirky and doin' it's own thing. ^_^
It looks like it would be uncomfortable, but I'm sure it's not - All the edges of my wedding band are hard corners as opposed to smooth, rounded curves, and it's incredibly comfortable - It also doesn't want to rotate on my finger. Is that one of the reasons you use hard edges, or is it just my ring?

I have a few cabochons of rutilated quartz, I love them, but I haven't had the hit of inspiration as to what to do with them yet. They're starting to become more popular because they're so unique.

I really like your use of the screws and such. What size are those? Have you thought about doing any pieces out of gold with stainless screws in them? There's a guy here in Texas, Steve Kriekbaum (I think that may be misspelled), who's done some work like that and the contrast is really striking.

thanks. the screws in this piece are 0-80 and 1-72. i used the larger of the two sizes to hold the stone.

i've only done a handfull of gold pieces, and really only do a piece in gold when my arm is twisted.

i've kind of gotten away from precious metals at this point. i'm sure i'll come back to them at some time, but they don't really lend themselves to the type of metalworking that i'm doing right now.

Astarwithin In reply to noformdesign [2006-03-31 22:02:54 +0000 UTC]

Don't take this the wrong way, but from the looks of your designs, you could probably make duplicates of them in white gold and get similar textures and things, you could even use the same screws and whatnot. 14k white is Really Hard and would probably do well for you, and you could do accents in other colors. ::Shrugs::

Even though I like it for its easy workability, I don't work in gold much because it's cost prohibitive for me, but it's coming back in style lately, especially yellow and rose gold, and I find that adding just a little bit of metallic color on occasion really piques viewer/potential buyer interest. Of course, you're getting plenty of attention by the elegance and precision of your line and designs I imagine. Wow.

Do you weld the pieces you're working on? How do you get those perfect lines?

noformdesign In reply to Astarwithin [2006-03-31 23:26:15 +0000 UTC]

i could have them cast, but that would be costly due to the size of many of the pieces.
as far as hardness, none of the precious metals are gonna beat stainless or titanium (especially when creating threads).

i love metalsmithing, especially jewelry design, not because i want to follow trends. i do it for reasons i probably couldn't explain very well, but if you feel the same way about what you do, you know what i mean.

i weld on some pieces (truly weld, not solder). as far as the tools i use, check out these links:

my cnc mill [link]
my micro mill [link]
my lathe [link]
my welder [link]

those are the main tools. i have a studio full of equipment......way to many to even remember.

i love your work, this especially. the mechanical/industrial aspect of the ring really acsentuates the stone, as in all of your designs. as azure said, it would be so easy to detract from the stone, or from the ring but you manage to balance it perfectly. really nice work.

Not sure how I missed this one being posted? Must've been while I was away. Actually found it while looking from the link you posted back to Deviant Art from the one of the reviewe on the Carrot Box. Congrats on that too...bout time you saw more recognition for your work.

Anyway..back to the ring. This is just fabulous. The stone could so easily be detracted from....it needs to be highlighted without being lost to the setting, and you've managed it with this piece.

This is a stunning piece of work.

Cheers,
K.

This is just mesmerizing. I keep coming back to it, trying to think of something intelligent to say. I love that you used rutilated quartz, it's so under-represented in jewelry.
