Description
My Grasslands Guardian costume. The gold silk is tea dyed in places, cut into over 30 bias strips, sewn, turned, pressed and then woven over a corset understructure (which I pattern drafted) and hand sewn in place. I'll leave it up to you to guess how someone would get in and out of it
The pants are hakama style hand dyed silk.
I am so sick of looking at this costume. I spent over 50 hours on this thing, some sleepless nights, and even some blood. But hey, at least it looks cool.
Thanks to Josh Hines for the lovely photos.

The knot/bow/tie thing in the back must be able to be untied, so the ribbons might be sewn together very secretly so the weaving doesn't come apart.
With the ribbons untied, slip it over your head, tie the ribbons behind your neck, and tada!
At least that's how I think you do it.
If that's not it then the top must be in 2 pieces.
It's beautiful!!! Makes me want to try to make something similar using the weaved ribbon technique thing.

That is so lovely and cool.
Hmmm, I wonder if the dress would be ruined if you hid some tacking stitches underneath the neck straps so that it wouldn't get unraveled past that point. Otherwise, a bit of time, patience, anxiety, and perhaps painter's tape. Or maybe it requires the model to get woven into it.
I was able to squeeze in and out of the muslin for the bodice to simplicity 4731 until I put the sleeves on, but I wouldn't try that trick with more delicate fabrics.

I would love to make something like this! Just showed it to my husband, and he said "Make one like that, and then we can go to an opera or something!!"

This reminds me of a dress I saw on Project Runway. Only that one was made out of seat belts.

I love this so much! For some reason, I really like things with a "grass" theme (shows up a lot in my work), and this is such a lovely representation of the idea of grasslands. I am very impressed at how detailed it is, too. Superb craftsmanship.

Oh my goodness. I think i have fallen in love. How long did this take you? And ( iknow this is sounding rather rude of me, but) do you take comissions? Because seriously, Watch list and a half.

This is absolutely amazing!! I really love the weaving! *is inspired* Gosh, all that sewing and turning for the strips! I'm tempted to use silk ribbon (is a cheater ) as a more mind friendly alternative
Just incredible!!!

Thanks!
yeah, silk ribbon would have saved some time, but then it doesn't stretch like the bias strips do, so you wouldn't get that nice fit.
but that's a good idea for things that arn't as curvy.... *is getting new ideas for stuff*..... ^_^
