Finally finished this!  I had a lot to keep up with, so it took a while before I could pick it up again and complete it.
This is Nature as a loving mother and creator. Part 2 - the ferocious side of Nature - is here .

Any feedback is welcome!

EDIT: You make my day, guys. Thank you so much! A daily deviation

Ahh wow, this is fantastic! Definitely one of my favorite pieces by you so far! Is this a personal piece, or did you do it for a class?

I did it for a class, but I had plenty of freedom with the theme and style

Oh hot damn, Dev! This is gorgeous! The colours and textures are absolutely gorgeous <3 you've grown so much as an artist.
My only crit would agree with Vars, that the roots perhaps be extended or look more chaotic ;3 but this is super beautiful <3333

Thank you so much
I liked the old roots as well, I even tried a different kind of long roots, but my teachers kept hating them with a passion xD

Gosh U: silly teachers!
I remember I had a photography tutor who hated my bird photography because she was certain the birds were going to come out of the pictures and attack her, like in the Hitchcock film.

Hello!! I think this piece of art is so beautiful! I was wondering if you had any tips on having more imaginative themes as well as color choice because I have finally started putting up drawing but I would like them to be more imaginative as well as an escape from reality....I would like to use fantasy to express emotion and since you did this drawing so beautifully and creatively I was wondering if you had any tips? Thank you

Thank you so much!
I hope I can be of help. I'm still a newbie, but I'll share what I have learned so far about this kind of things. Let's see...
When I need to come up with new/creative solutions, I usually start brainstorming. I jot down all sorts of things - both written notes and doodles. I start thinking of the kind of feelings and atmosphere I want to communicate and look for colors, subjects and compositions that can help me achieve those. I need to start moving to develop ideas - they rarely just pop up in my head.
Looking for reference pictures and reading books about color and composition are great ways to feed your imagination and technical skills! Also, an infallible way to build a richer "visual library" is to have many influences from all fields of art and... science, literature, everything. The more knowledge you have, the more inputs you get. You simply have a higher chance of finding ispiring themes and you generally have stronger technical skills to bring your ideas to life.
Keeping a folder of illustrations you like is also very useful. I save every inspiring picture I find on DeviantArt and art sites in general. It builds up year after year and you end up having a huge, ever-growing source of different color choices, subjects, compositions and themes.
Let them influence and inspire you.

This year I had to work a lot on ideas rather than just pretty renderings of overused subjects. At first I was in a constant fear of being unoriginal and I was pretty much stuck and unable to come up with... anything.
Eventually, I relaxed and got more productive, but not before learning an important lesson: don't obsess over finding original themes. There are thousands of ways to portrait something "overused" in a creative way, or under a new point of view.
"How" is more important than "what"

I hope that helped! I'm not a native speaker so explaining this is extra hard for me.
Thank you again and have fun with your art!

I am in so much love with the hands and your lighting on them - the skin practically glows and it's perfect. The colors and swirls too are spectacular, especially the way you see that they're transforming into other things, like the horses on the right. Beautiful design and execution!

Ohhh, this went a long way! I loved this the first time you posted the rough image. I do like this one a lot better, though in my opinion the longer and tangled roots looked a little better on the tree.

Nice to see you back on DA again Dev!

nondev In reply to Varsettie [2014-06-21 09:21:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I liked those long roots, but my teachers said they made the tree look too big and disproportionate, so I tried some different solutions. I must say now the tree looks more like a puny creation of Nature, as it is supposed to be. It was probably a bit too "invasive" with those crazy roots
And thank you - I'm slooowly uploading all the stuff and taking care of my huge deviantwatch inbox!
