I wasn't entirely happy with the first version of the map I did. Not only was it based on the point-defense map effort I did for them (which I wanted to distance myself from), but it wasn't accurate when I considered some of the other map sources I was discovering. To this end I wanted to create a final, definitive, Homeworld Galactic Map incorporating everything I could find about Homeworld.

Every source from the games and concept artwork was considered and edited to my own discretion. Also, like the first version of the map, I created new empires and identities to populate the universe beyond the seven or so named races.

Ultimately it was undone when someone pointed out that the Homeworld galaxy is NOT M51, and there are significant differences despite being based on the existant galaxy. Since M51 was key to the whole construction of this map, work was terminated.

This map is a jumble of several working layers put together. More or less, it's a freeze-frame of where I was in the middle of working on it, and it was not edited to look pretty.

I've yet to start on a third version of the map, mostly because Homeworld is more or less dead.

There is a version 3 that's stopped about after all the HW1 references have been added. BBI has given us a map, but it's inaccurate compared to other past sources.

I don't know how/if I want to proceed until we know more about Homeworld 3. Also, with efforts like mine getting noticed by the devs, it could be that they put together a better map for internal reference and show it to us, making my efforts a little moot.

We'll see!

The Taiidan republic, if I recall my own fiction right, was destroyed in three days by a blitzkreig from the Vaygr. Over the years since Cataclysm they had become complacent and bickering, and when destroyed they hid in the Hiigaran Empire as refugees. They were little more than a shadow government, leading the vanishing few loyalists, for a cause only a few believed in.

I've been following you for quite some time but only now did I realize you sorta dumped this project, which saddens me.

Thanks to Gearbox, the HD "remakes" are inbound, followed by Shipbreakers. You think this gives you inspiration to finish the map, or even start something else related?

I was for a time after the announcement, but it comes back down to the fact that I sank in all this effort, but for what kind of return? At the moment I want to move on to other things.

If Blackbird or Gearbox wanted my help they need only ask. I want to be a part of this almost more than any other creative endeavor.

Perhaps continue with your original intent of a passionate and interested fan? Is there a reward for that other than the satisfaction of seeing a project completed? Probably not, and I understand why you wouldn't finish it because of this. But in the end it is folk like you that keep the IP somehow alive.

Anyways, I trust I'll be satisfied with whatever new projects you may embark on. Keep going strong!

Wait- Homeworld takes place in a different galaxy than the Milky Way? I thought Hiigara was the 'new' name for Earth???

Once more, fantastic work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to EVAUnit4A [2011-08-26 00:28:12 +0000 UTC]

Homeworld takes place in a different universe. Uberjumper, one of the people attached to Homeworld production, has said as such.

If you squint hard enough perhaps you can suppose that Homeworld is in the far distant future. The Progenitors are hinted to be where all empires come from, and it was said they were not of this galaxy. All Homeworld sentients in the game are depicted as human.

Therefore, if all people are descendants of the Progenitors and the Progenitors are not of this galaxy, it can be concluded that they are ancient humanity expanded through the stars and the Homeworld Universe is M51 with account for galactic drift.

That is my theory anyway.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EVAUnit4A In reply to Norsehound [2011-08-26 01:00:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, interesting! So the Progenitors weren't an extraterrestrial alien race, but rather humanity all growed-up. Huh- so that's why The Pride of Hiigara's crew could interface with the Dreadnought so easily...

Wow, after 8 years of knowing and playing HW, you've just officially blown my mind.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to EVAUnit4A [2011-08-26 01:42:55 +0000 UTC]

It's my pet theory after playing the games so much. I like backstory and I liked where Homeworld was headed. It just made sense to me and that's how I connected the dots.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EVAUnit4A In reply to Norsehound [2011-08-26 05:30:24 +0000 UTC]

Well then the question arises: after being the Progenitors for so long, how could humanity regress so far backwards to have-

to resort to projectiles and missiles?
forget their own origins?

The Exiles are certainly understandable, but I'm talking about before the fall of the first Hiigaran Empire. If Hiigara is the Homeworld, not just for the Exiles, but for all of humanity in this galaxy including the Bentusi, then they share a common ancestry in the Progenitors. How could all that knowledge and wisdom be lost?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to EVAUnit4A [2011-08-26 05:38:28 +0000 UTC]

No, Hiigara is not the homeworld of the progenitors nor is it the origin of life in the Homeworld galaxy. My theory is something like this:

First, humankind branches out from earth over the millenia and creates a giant intergalactic empire. It is connected by hyperspace gates between points. These are what we would call the Progenitors.

Somehow a great war consumes the ancient progenitors. I believe it is civil war of a kind. Regardless, the ancient empire falls, hyperspace gateways are lost, and the universe falls into a technological dark age. During this time, whatever Progenitor capital existed in the M51 galaxy is destroyed by warfare. Many of the Progenitor planets are completely obliterated by hyperspace weapons of awesome destructive potential (Ghenna, in Homeworld 2, was what's left of a planet targeted by such weapons).

Untold centuries later the seeds of the ancient empire rediscover space flight. The Bentusi and T-Mat are among the first races to regain interstellar travel. The Bentusi and T-Mat have a disagreement in interpreting the Progenitors' will, and their ancient and silent war continues even beyond the fall of both civilizations.

The second generation of space empires begin to reach the stars, including the Hiigarans and Taiidan. The rest is history as we know it.

-----

This theory of a dark ages parallels the historical Dark Age following the fall of the Roman Empire. I thought it was fitting since much of Homeworld Lore has parallels in Biblical and ancient mythology.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EVAUnit4A In reply to Norsehound [2011-08-26 05:47:36 +0000 UTC]

Wow, guess that would prove even higher technology can't quell our basic nature for conflict...
No, I meant Hiigara was the origin for human life in M51; all races spread from there after the Progenitors fell.

Wait, the T-mat and Bentusi are in conflict? I know THAT's not canon! But there's nothing to hint at it. We see a T-mat ship at the very end of HW1's final battle just before the closing montage.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to EVAUnit4A [2011-08-26 05:57:34 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry, the T-Mat + Bentusi conflict is something of my own creation. It's my own theory... the Bentusi were supportive of the other races while the T-Mat were manipulative of them. The T-Mat goaded the Taiidan into conquest and gave gifts to Makaan to help him destroy the Hiigarans.

For sure there will be a Homeworld 3. But - not as a commercial game, but as a modification for Homeworld2.

As an example:
Do you know the Complex Mod [link] ? It has been voted as "Mod of the Year 2004" and is still being developed!

For the gameplay it seems to fit Homeworld 3 quite well!

Just improve the graphics a little bit and you got a new Homeworld!
Of course, the Question of a storyline is another one ... but you have to be patient!
Modders can make the impossible possible!

And who knows - things happens...

Sad but true, I am not holding out much hope fore a Homeworld 3 because modern gaming is all about "majority markets" rather then something worth rembering. But, of course, there are some exceptions. Still a sequel to the already "playing-it-safe sequel" that was HW2 is like expecting world peace.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to Zharad [2011-03-21 22:45:41 +0000 UTC]

I almost hate to shoot down the expectations of others who are wide-eyed and innocently believing Relic would revive Homeworld. Call me jaded and cynnical, but I'm used to my favorite things dying off and never coming back (ala Outpost 2).

Like Firefly, Enterprise in the hands of Manny Coto, or the original pre-Moore revival efforts of BSG, they have to die so that The Suck could live.

It bothers me to no end that this happens, and it has made me come to the conclussion that if a game/show is to survive in America it either needs to appeal to the bible thumping jingo's, the brain dead meat mass, and be sexually arousing. Crude as it my sound that is my observation.

Gottagrin [2011-03-17 08:46:19 +0000 UTC]

IMHO, why bother if it IS the M51 or not? If it can be done this good, why not MAKE it true? Those pointless criticism has ruined everything.

Because figuratively it is. No more Homeworld games will be made, nor any books or anything else commercially linked to the universe.

Relic is more interested in Warhammer 40K, World War Two, and other unoriginal titles.

zelaznostopy In reply to Norsehound [2011-02-28 19:48:24 +0000 UTC]

Don't think like this! >_< Relic is maybe now concentrated on something else but it doesn't mean they won't return to HW! There were already information about project Homeworld 3. And I know that THQ rules there but they still remember this old game. Here you got: "There has been speculation supported through various sources that Relic has re-acquired the rights to the Homeworld franchise from Vivendi. Finally, following the discovery of a document on the United States Patent and Trademark Office's electronic filing system by a fan, THQ confirmed that Relic indeed owns the trademark again, making a continuation of the series under THQ's lead possible" - Wikipedia

Don't lose your faith! THQ is a good companion for Relic - just give them some time and a chance...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to zelaznostopy [2011-02-28 19:54:43 +0000 UTC]

That news is several years old.

When I went to the last Game Developer's Conference, the Relic representative didn't know anything about Homeworld, but was eager to discuss Company of Heroes.

Unless you give me hard evidence of Homeworld 3's production, I'm saying it's dead.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zelaznostopy In reply to Norsehound [2011-02-28 20:14:23 +0000 UTC]

I can't give you any hard evidence of Homeworld 3's production. I also couldn't ever give any hard evidence of e.g. Warcraft 3's production in 2000. You see... If anyone's got a good project, they won't ever talk about it, leaving only simple ideas for ordinnary people... Until appropariate time...

Homeworld 3 is not being produced... But somewere in future, when THQ and Relic will have all Dawn of Wars and Companies of Heroes finished and "exhausted", they will return to older sagas, like they returned to Dawn of War after few years...

THQ is a nice company. There were already petitions to them about many things and THQ listened to them. They listen to their players.
Don't lose your faith, because none of THQ's projects was ever left.

Norsehound In reply to zelaznostopy [2011-02-28 20:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Most of the staff who made Homeworld have already left Relic for other projects. All the constituent parts that made Homeworld possible have disbanded.

Realistically, what cause would bring them all back together? Just because the fans want it isn't enough of a reason. As memorable as it was for us, others found it "too confusing" for play. Even among fans Homeworld 3 was a disappointment (not to me, but still.)

Hoping for Homeworld 3 is like Hoping for Outpost 3.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zelaznostopy In reply to Norsehound [2011-02-28 21:14:14 +0000 UTC]

And do you recall Heroes of Might and Magic V? In theory - made by a different team. In practise - great heir of HoM&M 3, with all its best advantages and without its disadvantages. It was different, although it was made in different times but it is still an amazing continuation of this saga.

There's no need of bringing entire team back together. Like in Deus Ex: Human Revolution - few man from the original team can be main designers and the programmists, artist etc. can be people of different studio. ^-^

Also reason to design HW3 can be really simple - everyone has their dreams and there can come time when Relic will try to ressurrect HW.

"Hoping for Homeworld 3 is like Hoping for Outpost 3." Maybe you're right but if waiting for Homeworld 3 would be like waiting for Duke Nukem Forever... You see... 10 years after, it realises.

Homeworld 3 is a ghost. If you believe in it, it will come true.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Norsehound In reply to zelaznostopy [2011-02-28 22:43:34 +0000 UTC]

Dreams aren't enough to bring a game back from the dead. Only if there's a market for a game will funding be appropriated. Homeworld is a very niche RTS with an above-average story and none of the marketing draws of an MMO. Relic probably saw the sales for Homeworld 2 and decided to push the DoW bandwagon to exploit a new and larger fanbase with disposable incomes and/or rich parents (like 40K players).

Duke Nuke 'em can hardly be drawn as a comparison because for a long time it was in development. We don't even have THAT for Homeworld 3. The only thing we DO have for it is wishful thinking on our part. Relic might have the license back, but if anything this denies other companies from making a true successor while Relic squats on the license!

Nothing you're going to say is going to convince me that Homeworld isn't dead, unless you're a Relic or Ex-Relic employee who knows something I don't.

I've put far too much fan-effort into Relic and Homeworld, with scarcely any official recognition, to believe in the miraculous resurrection of Homeworld.
