What is this stone or earth ? I have been sitting here for the last 5 minutes trying to work it out, and the reason I came to this conclusion was because I thought it would look great if it was dryer. Maybe the lines wouldn't be so finely cut in this case, and there might be a sense of more organic line... , I am interested in some of the smaller thinner lines, as they seem to run more freer from those larger ones... almost like twigs running off branches...

It is basically mud (as the soles of my shoes testified to my carpet later!), but I've never seen mud quite like it before or since. What caught my eye, though, was the crispness of it all, which isn't quite replicated in this picture (or at least, not at this picture size).
I certainly agree with you about the smaller lines, although I thought more lightning than twigs. Funny how the same thing produces different responses in people!
