Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

I know someone who has Autism, and she's probably one of the funniest people I know. We would carpool together, and she was just great.
So, I believe that words we invent to categorize differences don't really mean a thing, a person is a person.

as somebody with Aspergers (or autism spectrum disorder as they're calling it now and days) I was touched by this. I'm so used to people saying how I need a "cure" because what I have is a "disease". Is it really so wrong in our society to be different? It must be if they're trying to "fix" i.e. change a part of me.

And he loves that kind of stuff too.
This is such a good picture because its true. My Brother always complains how other people treat him different because of his autism. But in our house we try not to and he absolutely loves it.
Such a good picture
And he is absolutely adorable

This actually means a lot to me as well, I also have autism. It's relatively mild, and I am able to function well. And while we may be different, we are still people. Thank you for doing this, it means so much to me. <3

It's a good message, but personally, I just don't quite understand autism. x.x I've done search after search after search for whatever I could find to explain autism, but the best I'm getting could be reduced to one word: shy. According to the definitions of autism, I was autistic when I was younger, as are a few of my friends in certain situations. The most autistic person I know is a friend of my brother's, and I know he really does have something slowing him down. He's smart, no doubt, and I know he has things running through his mind, but his thoughts are just slow to present himself. He isn't good at talking to others on his own until he's spent some time with another person, and then he's as social and friendly as anyone.
I'm not trying to downplay anyone diagnosed with autism, but as the message that you pass reads, I see them as normal people who are just a bit shy. Help me out if I'm wrong. but please, to whoever comments on my comment, be mindful of how many may be before you. I'm not asking for a flood--just a little clarity.)

CrystalEnceladus In reply to OddFacade [2010-06-01 08:44:41 +0000 UTC]
Nope, not shy, not all people with autism are shy. Although, redicule and frustration may lead a person with autism to become shy. Shyness is a response to awkward social situations, not a personality trait. All humans had felt shy at one point or other, it's just some are more socially awkward than others. They're not necessarily autistic.
Think of a telly. The sound is good, the picture is clear, because the circuits work properly. When the circuits don't work properly, you get fuzzy pictures and static. Sometimes the static screams, sometimes it's silent. Either way, it can drive us barmy. Someone with autism have circuits that don't work properly all the time. Sometimes it's the reception circuits. Sometimes the circuits responsible for responses, sometimes both. Function of circuits and number of circuits affected, and how often and how severe, manifest themselves into the behviours.
Sorry for the long-winded response.

Thank you for the response, but I'm now thinking that what you've described is a degree of ADD.

CrystalEnceladus In reply to OddFacade [2010-06-02 04:57:46 +0000 UTC]
I dunno, I don't have ADD. I thought that was an inability to concentrate much, an inability to shut out irrelivant noises, emphasise and stay still. The two conditions overlap in some of their manifestations, I think.

OddFacade In reply to CrystalEnceladus [2010-06-02 11:25:21 +0000 UTC]
Those "static" thoughts you described are rather characteristic of losing one's attention to a given task. Maybe it's just me, but I think that the country is heavily freaking out about things that don't need people to freak out. x.x

CrystalEnceladus In reply to OddFacade [2010-06-03 06:18:57 +0000 UTC]
I think the diff is that normal people can focus when they want, while for people with ADD, it's a huge struggle. It's like a bike chain that keeps falling off no matter how you adjust it; you stop and start like a bus with a bad engine. Again, I could be wrong, I dunno anybody with ADD.

This kid knows how to live. The only way there can be world peace is if we are tolerant of everyone. Having any form of Autism is not easy. I have Asperger's Syndrome and I went my entire childhood undiagnosed
Always be proud of who you are, never be afraid of being yourself.
