Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

We have also decided to enable this as a print, mug, magnet, and postcard, and 100% of the profits will go to a wonderful organization that runs a program for people with disabilities that is close to our hearts: Easter Seals Camp Stand By Me [link] If you can, help us help them!
**Life will be very busy soon during summer months, so bear with me as far as responses go, please

This actually made me cry. It's true, we should respect EVERY person no matter their disabilities. There's this girl I know with Down Syndrome and sometimes people will look at her disgust and that always angers me. She's a person just like everyone else.
You tell your friend he's got a friend in me

That is a lovely picture, I think those who discriminate people with autism have no idea what challenges people with autism encounter. Really really nice

Well, I fav'ed this one, and I really want to comment on it as well.
But to be honest, I can't find any words to describe my opinion about this photograph.
Well, I could find words, but they are already spoken from many people before my comment so...
Thanks for this great, great piece of art.
And Congrats on the DD, it really deserves it.

This is very sweet. My little brother has autism so I know exactly what it's like to be scrutinized for something like this. We went to this school as kids for half a year, and they didn't have a program for him so they forced him to just play in the Kindergarten area all day. I was appauled at how they treated him, and in turn, me. Tolerance of others with disabilities and different development is a great message and this photo shows it very well. Thank you for this piece. (:

Oh goodness, this picture really touched me I have to say I think this picture would change a lot of people's prejudices. My stepdad does a lot of work with autistic children amongst other children with disabilities and I often grow very attached to them.
Also, I'd just like to add, my cousin is mildly autistic and I just showed him this photo and I haven't seen him smile so much in a long long time.
Thank you very much

Of course they're human, just because your brain develops slightly different doesn't classify you as another species. In fact, I've experienced some incredible thought process with friends with 'autism'. I've been impressed time and again with the ability they have to retain certain pieces of information. While it may cause differentiations in social development (A vague and disrespectful term if you ask me), people with autism are capable of amazing feats of the mind.
The HDT quote is incredibly relevant, and I'm impressed that you would mention it.

I give all my support, and congrats on the DD! We're all human no matter our personal struggles in life.

I have aspergers syndrome as well. Autism is condition that exists in a spectrum of cases. It doesn't prevent any of us from achieving our goals in life. When I first learned of my condition, I thought, "Great. I'm autistic as well as ADD. Friggin'awesome". It was hard for me to handle. It made me try even harder in school and in life. In spite of my "disease" I get VERY good grades. I have recently been invited to the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington. This has taught me many things. Among the things I have learned, is that being autistic isn't a handicap unless you think of it as that. Even more important is that we are all human, and even if some of us can't function on the same level, we are all still human beings, and should be treated as such.
