Description
This is a special person in my life. His favorite color is green. His favorite sport is soccer, and his favorite music is found on the Guitar Hero games. Like a lot of kids, he goes to school, and his favorite subject is reading. He loves swimming, computer games, and eating. He likes to dress up as Spider Man for Halloween, and wishes he could be Spider Man in real life. He has his own likes, dislikes, talents, and quirks. He breathes air, his heart beats, his mind thinks, and he has feelings. Oh yeah, by the way, he has autism, but really heβs just another human like you and me, and loves to be treated as one."If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau
Faves, features, comments, and watches are always welcome and extremely appreciated. Thank you for any support in advance (although I will try to thank you personally, sometimes life gets in the way)! If you use this picture, please send a link!
Update: To answer a frequent question I'm seeing: Yes, I am sharing with him his feedback, and no, he didn't technically write the text himself, but he did to the best of his ability, so he deserves the credit. In my opinion, yes he wrote it and deserves the credit because he did his very best and that's all anyone can do.

you're right. my cousin (9 years old, boy) has autism too. still he's a human, just like everyone else.
my cousin is somewhat challenging person. there has to always be someone who's watching his back or at least paying attention by listening what he's doing.
a few days ago he had pulled waching machine's plug off while it was still waching, he opened it and took all of those wet cloths out from the wacher. when his mom noticed ofcourse she scolded him but he just laughed and ran to bedroom, and started to rip tapestry/wallpaper off from the wall.

This is probably the most beautiful deviation that I've ever seen on DA. It's got such an amazingly strong message to it, and the DD that this has recieved is totally worth it, a hundred DDs still wouldn't express how beautiful this is.

Good, good... unfortunately it is still necessary that these things are claimed. At this point, should be naturalized within society, but I fear that we still need many years for to be 100% tolerant. Congratulations on this magnificent picture

Wow I so totally agree with this. My nephew (who is like a little brother to me) is autistic and he is very smart. He didn't utter a word till he was 3, but before that he started to read. He even watched his dad type in his password and soon found out what buttons to push to get into his computer. He is very special, and I love him a lot, but he struggles with being misunderstood, though he is now 7. This is a great picture. So sweet.

This is adorable, and the message is great.
Just the other day, my dog escaped and went running out to these people and their dog. It turns out it was my brother's friend, walking his dog with his father. My brother's friend has autism, yet is high-functioning. Even so, he'd had a few melt-downs at school and was moved to a school that better works with kids like him. He's so sweet, and when I first met him I didn't even know he was autistic. He was convinced that he wanted to trade dogs because my dog rolled on the ground with him and howled with him and licked his face.
It hurt me when his father was talking to my mother, saying that when kids found out about his autism they didn't treat him the same. Some would actually beat him because he was over-sensitive.

I work at a summer camp for children with special needs, many of whom are autistic, and it's so true, and so important for people who don't know much about autism to understand. I get to see a beautiful and communicative side of the kids I work with that so many people don't take the time to look for because they're so focused on that child's diagnosis. We are all of us so much more than the sum of our labels.

Awwww I relaly like this photo graph. I read an article the other day in the newpaper about a ten year old boy who has autism and he wanted to die everyday because he thought there was something wrong with him that made him weird. Also I know a young boy who has this too. I really admire this.

I saw this photo and simply thought: Yes. That's just it. I'm working with mentally and physical disabled people in one of my seminars, and my prof once sad something I found kind of shallow at first:
"You have to treat people with any kind of handicaps special. You have to be aware of their particular needs and spleens and behaviours. Just like it is with every person you work with." (I don't know if I really captured the point of what he was trying to say, it's kinda hard for me to translate it.)
For me the whole point is that it's true that you have to treat disabled persons special, but you have to treat everyone special, so there's at least no difference. Maybe I developed this kind of view in relation to my work at first, but now I feel that it comes through in my everyday life. The "So what!" in the photo really represents something of my attitude.
So, I hope I didn't talk too much nonsense.

This is amazing. I thought the same thing when I realized that I was autistic. I mean, yeah, its a pretty big deal to me, but at the same time, not to other people. They can still treat me just like everyone else, and enjoy my presence (and find me annoying too ).

He seems like a great kid! My favorite color when I was younger was green too. It's still one of my favorites since I have green eyes and my birthstone is emerald.
Thanks for sharing this with us! It has such a great feeling and a lovely message that everyone should realize.

Hi, I found this photo through my visit to another site where it was a favourite!
I really like that message, and it particularly resonates because I'm autistic myself, Aspergers, to be precise. I get irritated by how so many people tend to equate Autism with tragedy and mental retardation, whereas the truth is, most of us "fly under the radar", particularly when we're female, like myself.
I have a career I enjoy, am married with a child (also Autistic like me and currently attending university to become a doctor) I'm paying off a mortgage, in pretty much all ways I'm just a regular person. Just don't expect me to meet your eyes or try to engage you in conversation!
Thanks again for posting this, I truly agree. "I have Autism: so what?"

I'm the youngest my mom had but my older brother is the one treated that way cause he has autism too. And I don't mind, but it hurts to know that other people don't see, don't understand that. So thank you, thank you for your understanding. And tell him he's got all the things that most regular kids could only wish for. Thank you and thank him.
