Description
I was wondering if I could demo breast dynamics with water balloons. Although I didn't have any as a reference, I tried to logically deduct how they they would behave. I find that water balloon with a string depicts the basic idea of breast dynamics rather well. As I'm not blessed with the privilege of having breasts, my points derive from my observations. Feel free to correct me if you find that I'm completely wrong. This demo is more like an intro for possible breasts demonstration part 2. But before the real thing, it's good to know the dynamics behind the breasts.
Numerable factors affects the shape all the time: the body position, motion, clothing... to mention some. Whatever force is manipulating the breasts, the gravity always takes place in some way or another. Obviously, the size of the breasts is a significant factor: the larger they are, the more evident the manifestation of gravity is. The basic shape is pretty much like a water drop, if the breast is hanging free. Here I demonstrate rather big breasts on flat surface.
Regardless of the size, it's the shape that make breasts attractive. So when I draw breasts, I:
-Apply gravity and support (force and opposite force).
-Make them look soft and squishy, yet firm
Hopefully you find this useful

hmm, i see, found it. then it's fine, i guess.
still, I think you should promote your art and suggest it to tutorial groups, because as i looked now your tuts are featured in few groups with not exactly teaching purpose.
looks like it is not a big deal for you, still it makes me sad. for example, guy from youtube makes money on views of the video(apparently) and/or earns attention with that.
being humble is nice, but letting other people sell fruits of your hard work is wrong.
but it is just my opinion, if someone stole my art i probably wouldn't know what to do. because self-criticizing artists like me tend to be like "meh, it was anyway not good enough" attitude, being too insecure in the outcome of their work.
wooow that pixiv artist, great works, thanks for the link. but i saw only illustrations, no tutorials(though i may be didn't find it because the site is not fully English).
btw, your tut is in Russian artists' group, do you happen to speak Russian?
anyway, good luck & do more tuts ^^

I'm mostly drawing these for my own enjoyment and practice, but I also share them with everyone to help people out. Submitting things in groups is already extra work for me. I'm lazy guy when it comes to anything else but my art, so I'm not very active in dA community. If people request my tutorials to be included in group galleries, I accept the requests.
I didn't pay anything to learn drawing, which is why I also want to share my works for free. It's sad if people use my work to get money or attention, but there is very little I can do about that, (other than keep from uploading anything). For me drawing is ultimately a recreational hobby. Although I'm trying hard to become better at drawing, I don't really have any ambitious goals with it.
Yeah, he is really awesome, he is like my idol . I don't know if he has all his works in there. I found the reference from one hentai gallery, which featured Houtengeki's artwork, apparently some older stuff.
As I said before, I'm lazy bum so I'll let people request having my works in their group galleries . Although I'm living next to Russia, I don't speak Russian myself.
Thanks, and if I just come up with new tutos, I will

Sometimes i forget that people draw for enjoyment xD i mean, when i look at good galleries full of works and with a pretty good page view rates i usually assume it is more than just a mere hobby.
but i see your point, this is really generous of you
nice, i'll be waiting ^^

In certain styles I like a slightly fake look to breasts, but only in drawings of course. Still, this is the preferred way I'd like breasts to be drawn. Well done Nsio, I hope everyone has passed this around the internet for reference by now.

They dont quite act like water balloons actually just to point that out. You've got the right idea though! This is great in means of the general idea. Instead of water balloons though think more...pudding. Pudding balloons, that adds a bit of that firmness that water balloons lack that breast have

I was aiming for general idea in order to simplify breasts into something easily understandable. But you are right, water balloon physics makes them a bit too squishy . At first I drew them balloons, now I'm applying extreme physics... so maybe someday in future I get the right balance

In that respect you did awesome. I plan on using the tips in this to better my own drawings honestly. If it helps at all though, the water balloon idea works great for anime styled drawings since those are generally over-exaggerated anyways . So in a way you do have the right balance just not in a realistic sense lol

If I may butt into this conversation late...
Fore-cite does make a point that this reference to "boob physics" does work well for anime in particular, but aside from these water balloons or the pudding balloons... Remember there is a body attached to the other side of that fat sack. It doesn't act on it's own just as the force of a water balloon would. With a hunk of flesh weighing down half of your object, and the object itself- while, yes, being a fat sack- is also made up of fatty tissues. They move, but they're no water balloons! Just things to keep in mind.
Enjoy your arting, all.

Butt in when ever you please my friend! It's never to late lol. And yes that also is something to remember, the reason I compare it more to pudding it because, well seriously have you ever filled a balloon with pudding? It really does have almost exactly the same consistency as breasts but that's really about it honestly, because you do have a very valid point. Balloons have one thing that makes them incomparable to breasts, they're not attached. Their movement is guided by the pectoral muscles underneath them and the muscles that pull and affect those muscles as well. Thank you for reminding me of that with your "there is a body attached" comment. In my excitement to finally get my pudding comparison I forgot to mention that little fact.

Breasts are NOT waterballoons, even the right image is anatomically not correct. A breast is much firmer (especially when young!). Keep in mind that breasts are firm, holding a pencil under them would actually be impossible. Young (even big!) breasts would NOT be able to hold it and the pencil would drop. Only saggy boobs work like that... Your theory would imply that the gravity would pull them down down down when standing up- without a bra. AKA saggy breasts. Yes those exist but not all boobs are that. Please, they have a mass and aren't just liquid.

Nsio In reply to kaiyela [2013-06-09 15:27:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for pointing out the firmness. True, breasts aren't water balloons. I just used them as an example for making it easier to understand the dynamics behind the breasts.
As I haven't done empiric research on real breasts, my points dervies from my observations, thinking and personal preferences. That said, I can't deny the fact that my drawing isn't anatomically correct and my views are biased. I usually don't want to draw too large breasts, because "my dynamics" makes them too liquid, just as you stated here.
Could you also take a look in my second part too and tell your opinion regarding the smaller breasts that I have demonstrated there?

Forcedlactationlover In reply to Nsio [2013-10-15 16:40:59 +0000 UTC]
This is both right and wrong. As to mass, yes: breasts have mass, but, outside of skin, and Cooper's ligaments, there is nothing to keep them from sagging, and quite soon, the mass related to size will produce a breast that WILL hold onto the pencil.
As to the pencil test: Yes, young breasts are firmer than older ones, but, if they're big enough, almost no matter how young the possessor, the pencil WILL remain in place under them. The simple weight of them will produce enough sag to hold onto the pencil. This is from a girlfriend of mine who was well endowed from the age of 12, and by 13 the pencil stayed in place.

This is awesome - I know a lot of people who's art would benefit from seeing this I think making them realistic in this way (showing how they interact with gravity and surfaces) make them sexier - I don't find a majority of 'balloon' boobs attractive
As a woman with a large chest though, I'd like to point out (for the sake of realistic breasts alone) that when they are that large, they do not tend to squish together that way. Gravity pulls them the way you illustrated, but a lot more away from each other. Trust me - I WISH my chest went together rather than away all the time, but there's a reason they make bras that do that for us ladies and our gals However, for the sake of art, even I draw them more the way you drew them here. It all depends on the artist's tastes and how "realistic" you want to go

Nsio In reply to Nine-Tailed-Fox [2013-06-08 12:20:04 +0000 UTC]
I agree. I guess that's why most hentai comics include so forceful manipulation of breasts with either hands or... well, with anything.
Thank you a lot! It's always useful to hear women talking about their first hand experience about breasts (it's quite a surprise they talk about their breasts quite openly, actually!) I thought that the surface alone can support the breasts to some extent and prevent them falling to the sides. That's of course natural when they are hanging free, but now that I think about it, I guess you are right in this case too. I'll keep that in mind
And yeah, it's all about the artist's preferences, and I don't think I'm completely unbiased drawer either! I usually don't want to draw too large breast because they don't usually have the shape I'm after. So when I do draw them large, I cheat a little, hehe
I just submitted the second part [link] , so I would love to hear your opinions again, if you please!

Nine-Tailed-Fox In reply to Nsio [2013-06-09 06:11:33 +0000 UTC]
I draw a lot of pin-up girls myself with my own chest as reference, and I have my BA in Art Studio so I've taken plenty of figure drawing classes. When you draw that many naked women, you just stop caring about talking about breast dynamics openly
Wow! I really love both part 1 and part 2 of these, especially your emphasis on the rib cage in part 2 The only advice I would offer again is the separation of the breasts for larger women. You have the bottom half down perfectly, but then still add a hint of cleavage/breasts coming together at the top (so they kind of do this awkward separate-squish-separate thing lol). I'm mostly referencing the top fully colored "motherly" reference drawing of yours.
Again though, these are really great, and thank you for making them! Breast are all quite drastically different from woman to woman, and as artists we often take the parts of them we like the most for our drawings (even I don't draw my women with two different sized breast like the average woman has lol). But these basic guidelines you've created are very helpful and have definitely taught many people, I'm sure

Woah, then you really do know a thing or two about breasts! I'll heed your words
Yeah, I was had my doubts regarding the cleavage on "motherly" one. I believe the breasts do press together at least a little, but even if they do, it shouldn't be drawn with such bold lines or with lines at all. Though I think it had more to do with my urge to add a semi-cleavage there no matter what, so I believe in your explanation and remember it when I get to draw larger breasts next time
Thanks a lot for your opinions! Good to hear that you liked

omg. finally. I really hate it when artists draw women with rock hard balls of nothing on their chest which aren't affected by gravity or objects -.- I have chest myself and i always try to use it as a reference when drawing girls (finally i have a reason to be proud of the size) :L but its annoying when females have a rock hard chest, it makes the characters look fake and although im not attracted to girls i think it makes animated/fictional women look a lot more attractive when their chests are softer and more realistic :L
btw i think you've done a good job without a proper reference, you've got them down to a tee

Nsio In reply to cherryblossom2100 [2013-06-08 12:26:52 +0000 UTC]
I agree with you. That's why I'm aiming for certain shape and softness rather than fake bimbo breasts. And I think it's natural that breasts look sensual, even if the drawing itself isn't actually erotic. I wonder if women really think about their breasts when they are in public, because it feels like they unintentionally show off there! O///O
Heh thanks. I have had to resort in hentai quite a lot to get where I'm now.. ^^'

cherryblossom2100 In reply to Nsio [2013-06-08 12:47:39 +0000 UTC]
yeah I never understood the appeal of bimbo breasts either :L I think that most do, I do think about my own chest when im out and about, but I think more about "am I showing too much? are they too outlined?" rather than "I hope these look big enough to get some attention"
but I think it is mostly unintentional showing
even so, most hentai's do tend to have breasts unaffected by reality :L
