Description
EDIT: Although I have drawn an example with a breast simply protruding from the chest, this is not the case in reality. That example is just to illustrate the fact that the breasts are actually surprisingly far from collarbones.EDIT 2: Remember that this is not "the only and right" way of drawing breasts. This is how I draw them, and you may agree or disagree with me as you please
I'm back with part 2. It took pretty long to compile, and it's not comprehensive, but I believe it has some good points there and there. Note that these are my own observations and I'm not unbiased artist. I have my preferences that I follow to make appealing drawings.
In anime and manga, breasts aren't drawn too strictly according to the physics. The breasts tend to be placed higher, near the collarbones, because it makes them look young and perky. Drooping hardly ever takes place. In some hentai, breasts tend to look more realistic, but usually they are rather monstrous physics-defying lumps of perfect shapes. Also, girls without bras don't seem to be bothered about their breasts jiggling crazily around. In reality, what I have heard, breasts are quite a nuisance, with and without bras.
Anyway, I drew my own view of breast. Note, that these apply on breasts that are hanging free. Bras and clothing in general are factors that affect the shape of the breasts a lot. This is probably why people think breasts always look nearly perfect spheres, even without supportive piece of clothing. This is, of course, not the case. I hate anime figures with detachable clothing parts, as the breast don't fall like they should. Despite having six Revoltech Queen's Blade action figures with such feature, I bought them due to their excellent articulation, not for this obnoxious feature.
Here I wanted to emphasize the rib cage. As it's where the breasts are anchored, it's the most significant "object" that affect the shape, size and position of the breasts. Note that, the larger the breasts are, the more support they need to keep the shape. So a girl with small body can't offer as much supportive area for the breasts to anchor to like women with larger rib cage. Thus small girls tend to have smaller breasts and if they do have large breasts, they look quite different from those of bigger women.
Also pay extra attention to the understanding the 3D. Perspective is such a pain, but in order to draw anything, it's a must have skill. In order to draw the breasts, you need to understand where the beholder is looking at it, how the body is related to it etc.
Breasts also come in various shapes. However, I have only drawn shapes that I find attractive. That said, the breasts don't always follow the dynamics too strictly, especially the larger breasts. This is why I don't usually want to draw extra large breasts, as the dynamics in them are often too ridiculous
This is also why I drew "girly", "lady-like" and "motherly" body builds as a reference. It's quite natural that younger women have smaller breasts and body compared to older women due to growth. These are only archetypes though, what's drawn here are about women in general point of view.
And finally, as an apology, I'm sorry for illustrating under-aged looking girls in reference part. For the sake of practice, I wanted to try drawing different body builds. I want to make clear that I have no interests in kids. Also, I apologize for illustrating obaa-san. Just like with kids, I have no interests in very old women. Everything is for the sake of art and demonstrating the things the way they are. Don't expect to see more of these two extremes from me here on dA.
Hope you like!

I guess you're better off if you look at real pics for reference. Anyway, the trick of drawing small looking breasts is to use very few subtle arcs to define them

I always have so much trouble with the lines. I try and use larger ones and smaller, but it ends up looking REALLY bad. Well either way I'm just starting to learn how to draw people with proportions. Still am soooooo glad I knew about the gravity for breasts waaaay before I started drawing, I just have issues with drawing in general so they look messed up. lol It always got on my nerves when I saw messed up breasts so I hope more people get the hint already! BOOBS ARE AFFECTED BY GRAVITY TOO!
π: 0 β©: 1
Nsio In reply to SihaRakhet [2013-07-05 20:57:03 +0000 UTC]
Quick, strong and confident strokes are the key for lively lines, that's what I have learned . It's often hard to get the line right in first go though, so undo command is very convenient
I believe the reason most people draw gravity-defying boobs is that most of the time we see breasts with support, with bras for instance. Also, probably those fake breasts are to blame too. The physics with extra large breasts are quite different from smaller breast, so no wonder people don't get them right, including me.
π: 0 β©: 1
SihaRakhet In reply to Nsio [2013-07-05 21:41:08 +0000 UTC]
Oh I hit undo quite a bit more than I should. I try for living lines and to just use sure strong strokes, but I can never seem to get them right, so they come out careful and just bleh-ish.
And true. All the bras and breast jobs do make it a bit difficult if you're model or reference have either of the two. Heck, I've tried drawing small chested girls and I have problems with it because I only know what I have seen with my own. So yea. I imagine all the 'false advertisement' would make people thing boobs are gravity defying. lol

This is a useful tutorial for starting out, and it makes for some great and more realistic looking drawings, but it still misses out a few of the actual anatomy points -
- Breast tissue, and more importantly the connective tissue actually continues right around to under the armpit, although the main anchorage point is confined to a teardrop shape directly over the pectoral muscle, covering most of the muscle
- Especially large breasts will not end up in this "torpedo" shape you've drawn, particularly when lifted or placed on something, they'll be wider rather than longer. Fat will build on the underside of the breast as well as on top, the nipple is not usually found on the very bottom of the curve. You can't just use the water balloon physics application all the time, the breast contains not just fatty tissue but glands which keep the area around the nipple a fairly regular shape and ligaments which hold the breast in place (this is what causes the actual breast shape, the ligaments at formation are taut, and pull the breast tissue upward, anchoring mainly at the area around the nipple. As the woman ages the ligaments become looser and damage accumulates, eventually causing the drooping breast found in older women)
- And on the subject of water balloon physics, for goodness' sakes find a set of breasts and give them a squish. Or use your butt, bicep, or relaxed thigh. They don't deform half as much as you think they do around fingers, that connective tissue is quite supportive, and only the outermost layer is fat which squashes easily under pressure. Much like every other squashy part of your body. Unless of course you're heavily overweight, in which case they and any other body part you test this on will give you skewed results, find a friend who doesn't mind you using their relaxed bicep as a reference. (best position is to hold the arm up at a right angle to the body, not trying to flex the muscle just hold the arm there)
Seriously the boobs-are-blancmange manga trend is the most irritating thing I've ever come across since Liefield Waists and totally inaccurate to boot.
Sorry for the essay, I think that may have been building for a while.

It's fine, your points are valid and I can't really deny them. It's always good to hear criticism.
True, I didn't really cover all (or any) anatomical points. That's because I'm not too familiar with them in order to teach people about anatomy. To be frank, I really don't have understanding regarding real anatomy. What I have learnt is related to body proportions. What I can do is to help people to understand why breasts aren't simply two spheres glued on the chest and to see the breasts in three dimensional space.
The world of manga is full of exaggerating, and so are mine drawings. In order to simplify breasts to something easily understandable, I used the water balloons as a metaphor. That said, I really cannot say I'm right with the breasts I have drawn. And what comes to the larger breasts, I don't really like drawing them just because of my dynamics, that make them look weird, how ironic :'D. At first I drew them balloons like any beginner, now I draw them too squishy. Maybe I'll find the balance someday.
You are second person pointing out serious flaws in my demos, and I thank you for your honesty. I hope you don't despise me for showing my way of drawing breasts. At least I don't draw them fake air-filled balloons, which is already a good start isn't it?

I guess there's a bit of an advantage to be had in having my own pair to reference, honestly your way of doing this is a whole lot better than a lot of manga that's actually been published, let alone the amateur stuff.
You've got most of the basics, and you did say you tend to keep things in proportion, which you can draw well - the smaller and average (actually that's a little above average) sizes up there are great, and the anatomy underneath is solid. Things just fall down when you hit the larger sizes, which is fine - it's not like there are many references knocking around for naturally oversised breasts.
As for squishiness, just use your arm or something as a reference, it's pretty much the same, assuming you're not massively under or overweight. the difference in rl feel between breast and muscle is that it's easier to compress, not that it moves further.
