The Akashan Union's Niobium-Class vessel is one of dual purpose within the AKAF; The first is to act as the sort of long range, long duration explorer the Republic has in spades, and the second is to serve as a place to engage in the kind of experiments one would have to be out of their mind to conduct in a terrestrial environment. This is accomplished via the four large open bays set at the bow of the vessel, well away from the crew and vital areas and isolated by a well-designed armored neck that allows the whole section to be blown free in case of... Well, let's just hope not. The same hull is re-used in the AKAF Vaccination-Class Medical Cruiser, where this same arrangement helps ensure quarantine in case of an outbreak. Large bays allow easy access, or they can be vented to toss whatever it is into vacuum. The Niobium-Class is lightly armed; Useful if whatever was blown into space needs to be shot a few times just to make sure.
