Description
For NationStates; Modeled in DoGa with custom and standard parts.----
In use across all Republic starships as well as a good number of civilian and allied forces, the MkVI Escape Pod is a marvel of modern survival equipment. Typically these pods are carried under innocuous-looking panels or recesses in areas of the ship that would not be specifically targeted. They are themselves armored with the bottom being both a thick armor plate as well as a suitable heat shield for planetary landing. They have a limited maneuvering system capable of putting them on course towards a nearby planet and of course their own emergency beacon in several communications flavors including a slow but still faster-than-light transmitter. Inside they are comfortable with four crash couches laid out in a 'X' configuration, the hatchway on one side, waste management facility on the opposite side, and two configurable spaces between the next pair of couches. Each couch can be configured for various body sizes and types and there is an individual storage area underneath as well as copious storage for survival supplies built into the walls. Between the four is another user-configurable space that consists of a table that can be pulled up from a central pedestal to serve each couch individually in quarter-sections. Under this is the emergency beacon and the power supply. Swing-in hard consoles are mounted to one side of each couch, and they all have their own hardline data port.
On some vessels, particularly those with very limited space to begin with, the MkVI acts not only as the escape pod but also as the regular crew spaces. Notable among these ships are the Nova, Super Nova, and Opposition-Class Destroyers. These ships are usually based out of larger facilities and have expected field operations number in days or at most weeks and thus the cramped quarters are of limited concern. Still, the MkVI has numerous electronic creature comforts for these crews. It also has a large number of non-volatile and non-perishable survival supplies, it can float (so one can sail it around), many of the survival goods are double, triple, or even quadruple use, and there are numerous instances where an escape pod has been put to a very creative use or even more mundane; A colony on GEC-9983Ab was established using nothing but MkIV escape pods purchased on the secondary market.
