A 'Fire Dragon' Theater Defense System moves through the forest as an officer inspects the goings-on...
----
The Outer Systems Alliance's (OSA) 'Fire Dragon' is a heavy theater defense system designed to engage and destroy large-scale threats within its operational engagement envelope. This would be warships, dropships, super-heavy ground vehicles, small cities, large cities, space stations, space ships, asteroids...
'Fire Dragon' is both the transporter and the missile system itself, which is named after the ancient Chinese rocket of the same general operation. It is a two stage weapon with a powerful, high-acceleration 'booster' that mounts nine smaller missiles. When the initial boost phase is near-complete, these break off and are then capable of either independent or joint 'tactical' operation with their planning AI able to enact plans such as sacrificing some missiles to draw fire from point defense systems, or envelopment actions, or misleading movements, or even loiter-and-pursue. The platform also mounts a small selection of secondary weapons for self-defense; two fixed medium-range launchers on each flank and a turret-mounted short-range launcher as well as a utility grenade launcher and a medium high-cycle accelerator on the upper deck.
Like their predecessor the MAZ-series of mobile ICBM transporters, the 'Fire Dragon' is designed to be a semi-mobile platform that operates as part of a larger defense network. Some operate out of specific defense sites with multiple launchers staged inside hardened bunkers while others are hidden in the wilderness, inside an old barn, abandoned building, in a deep ravine, or even simply under the deep canopy of the forest. While it is against Republic military policy to base Defense Force assets in civilian areas, the OSA is under no such obligation and it is not unknown for 'Fire Dragon's to be found parked off the back end of an OSAMI manufacturing plant or under a very large tarp down at the wharf.
Because they are operated as semi-mobile and thus semi-independent units, they are actually a pretty decent posting. Everything forward of the ground access hatches is devoted to a reasonable three-person living space with separate sleeping quarters, a nice entertainment / duty area, a kitchenette, full bath, armory, and maintenance / tool room. Most end up as highly personalized spaces - none have every seen action and it is quite possible that if they ever needed to, some might have problems digging through the piles of pizza boxes and beer cans to the launch console...
