Description
For NationStates; Modeled in DoGa. And because who doesn't love gunships?----
A variant of OSAMI's very popular 'Malakh'-Type GravRotor, the 'Azrael' is a hybrid gunship/transport that targets the Special Operations market segment. Retaining all of the electronic warfare and survival systems of its progenitor, it pulls and replaces the luxury interior with a spartan transport compartment and augments these with selected weapon systems. All of these are designed to allow it to get a small unit of operators on the ground quickly and safely and then provide close support to the same.
As mentioned, the new transport compartment is plain but functional; capable of holding eight to twelve with the exact number depending on their equipment and species. This is accessed by an armored sliding 'door-in-door' on either side of the craft with the 'in-door' mounting an articulated hardpoint that can be fitted out as a door gunner's position. Lock points are provided for rappelling, as well as a healthy assortment of cargo nets, folding seats, and equipment charging stations. Like the 'Malakh', the compartment is provided with an ejection system; in case of platform failure, the doors blow out and the center-row seats are ejected.
This is not at all fun.
Straight from the factory, the 'Azrael' is armed with two outboard missile pods as well as two high-cycle accelerators, one under the nose and one at the base of the tail - both can be retracted. To accommodate this, the cockpit has been reworked to a front-back seating arrangement with the pilot sitting ahead of and down from the co-pilot/gunner. The anti-missile systems remain as they were previously, though the counter-measure dispensers have been halved. These are now mounted on rotating collars and linked to an internal magazine, effectively retaining and doubling their payload and allowing for the loading of anything else that might fit in the launch tubes.
Immediately on introduction, the variant was adopted as a primary aircraft by the OSA's own Development Group Seven - DG7. DG7 is the Special Transport Group that supports the other DevGroups with a focus on inclement and close air operations in support of special operations forces. OSAMI features this prominently in their marketing materials and there has been some question as to who exactly suggested this rapid adoption...
