Description
For whatever reason, it took me a while to realize Old Oscar was basically a Sopwith Camel. Although I thought he’d be the most difficult to render -as I’d have to move his prop-stache to fit the face on, by that point I’d gotten much better at face-rendering, so I was able to capture what I think is a pretty faithful adaptation of the OS Oscar, looking like a kind old granddad who’s still got enough spunk left in him to fly with the young planes. The only issue I really have is that I made his colors a little too pale and grey, and there’s not a lot of color balance.
I remember an episode of Jay Jay called ‘Oscar Leads the Parade’ [or something to that effect] wherein the young planes want to lead the parade instead of Oscar, and Oscar, overhearing, decides its time to step aside and let the younger generation have their turn. However, Big Jake tells the planes of the whole reason why Oscar leads, telling them the story of how he braved an icy storm to get medicine to a snowed-in village or town, or something, and the young planes, amazed by the story, surprise Oscar by putting him back in the lead, out of respect.
That’s the sort of thing that puts Jay Jay up alongside Thomas, in my head, and given that Oscar -being a Sopwith, would most likely have seen WWI action like Big Jake saw WWII action, it adds greater layers to a long history of air service and the respect Old Oscar has earned. Why was he never retired? I dunno’, maybe he was just too stubborn and insisted to stay in service, even after he became outdated
