Software Introduction Week
Hello everyone,
and welcome to the first ever Software Introduction Week here at projecteducate !
It’s been a long time coming, and we finally managed to pull it out of the proverbial hat and made some easy to digest information pies.
There will be articles on some well known programs, as well as some perhaps not so well known ones, and what’s more, we kept complete beginners in mind. Each article will give you an in depth rundown of how each program works, so they will seem less daunting when you first sit down to play with them.
Want to know what to look forward to?
Here are the programs that will be covered in this week’s articles:
- Lightroom (Photography)
- Illustrator (Vector & Illustration)
- InDesign (Magazine & Book Layouts)
- Krita (Painting & Sketching)
- Paint Tool SAI (Painting & Sketching)
- SketchBook (Painting & Sketching)
- Daz 3D (3D Rendering)
Whether you are new to any kind of Digital Art, or not, we hope this week will have something for everyone!
Also:
If you have any questions up front regarding the programs mentioned in the list, ask away right now!
At the end of the week we will have a Q&A that will answer many, if not all, of those questions.
Enjoy!

No article about GIMP?
Or is there already an article about this software I skipped by mistake. Sorry for that strange question but I got curious

Not this time around, no. As already mentioned in response to a previous question about the choice of the programs features in this week, GIMP was offered, but by that point the week had already been filled. And it also always depends on who wants to write for the week, and if GIMP happens to be their field of expertise. ^^

So kinda like first-come-first-served. I understood so it's okay

Yes, pretty much, if the first that come actually have the experience to explain an entire program, in this case. ^^
It's funny really. Sometimes we have to hunt for people to write articles for a week, and sometimes they just come to us in droves with ideas for another week.

Perhaps a stupid question, but why not also PhotoShop or Gimp or any of the other image editing programs? How did you select the programs you chose to discuss in these articles?
Perhaps you could also one day create more of a cross-program article about certain common image editing/creating tasks/features: Such as "this is how you do this specific editing/creating thing in Lightroom, and also how the same thing is done in PhotoShop/Gimp/etc."
I know it would be more work, but it was just a thought.
Another interesting article might be one that highlights, compares, or discusses how to use free online/Internet based image editors - such as ones that people can use to easily create and edit animated gifs.
Again, just a suggestion.

As this is not a question that belongs in the Q&A, I am just going to answer this now:
Photoshop was done to death. I personally have done several articles, one for complete beginners, on how to start with the program as a painter. I am sure others have done that for editing or photo manipulation as well, introducing basic tool uses and such. So we felt this time around, other programs should come first.
We chose the ones we have on a first come, first serve basis. GIMP was also among the suggested articles, but by that point the week was already full. However we are planning on doing another Software week at some point in time with programs that were not featured in this one.
One of my Photoshop articles - Digital Painting 101 - was in part a cross program article, in that I actually showed four different programs and how to set up their workspaces, before I switched to Photoshop for the painting tutorial. Tools in most of the Adobe programs for image editing are the same. The look the same, and do the same thing. Other programs also use similar icons for the tools, and therefore it would not be very beneficial to do a cross program article.

We plan on having many more software introduction weeks the selection was made based on who we could actually find to write articles in time and thus what those peoples' expertise was regarding which software. Photoshop actually got a pretty comprehensive guide previously done by efelidi for PE, as for GIMP that's planned for the next week like this we do
Otherwise, thanks for the suggestions
