Description Yet another vent piece about both dA's policies and women being objectified in mass media.

I cannot stress enough how frustrating it is seeing images on here with women having their butts hang out for all the world to see. A lot of the time when I go to report for not having a mature tag, the site won't allow me due to a closed case stating that "the reason was invalid" or "a member of the site has viewed this and decided that it does not need a mature tag." Really, dA? You won't allow for a man's penis to even be SEEN on here yet when women's boobies and asses flap in the breeze, it's completely okay? Also note the amount of inflation for both genders that don't have a mature tag (don't get me started. I've seen things that I wish to unsee....).

Now for mass media in general, I understand that it's been happening since the term "Sex Sells" emerged, but seeing it almost everywhere I look and go? It's a bit much. Examples would include book covers, movies & tv shows, social networks (specifically Tumblr), music videos, misleading thumbnails (i.e. YouTube), video games (i.e. armor upgrades in which she's basically wearing a metal bikini) and advertisements. Need I say more about how disgusting it is from a sensible woman's point of view?

Now if you women wanna flash your junk around, go to a club or a rave for that kind of stuff or seek a modeling profession for Playboy. This is an art website. Not a porn site. Take your fetishes elsewhere or keep them private. That's my advice.

EDIT: I'm well aware that there is a Mature Filter on dA. I forgot to add the part where I was also frustrated for the fact that some of these types of images bypass the Mature Filtering system and even if they have been reported, most of the time dA will accept the image as it is and say that it doesn't need a Mature Tag. I personally have my Mature Filter ON so you do not need to tell me set it up.

Also a while back, I made a post in the Suggestion Forums of the dA site so you can check it out here: support.deviantart.com/entries…

Because I am such a huge fan of you and your work I want you to understand that I meant no disrespect by saying that I did not find the image appealing.  It is a very cool photo,..just not what I would consider artistic nude.  The  image did make a daily deviation, so congrats for that,...but in the context of nudes or artistic nudes, that is where I meant in did not appeal to me in that context.  My girlfriend actually found your work elsewhere and she was very impressed and we found you on DA and we have been big fans ever since.  Your creativity is un-matched.

p.s. One of the things that I really liked about your "Put the Lights On" image, and one  of the first things that I noticed was the appearance of a "grey alien" illusion caused by the light blur right in the middle of her midsection,..about where her belly button would be.  Looks just like a little alien head. lol

There is WAY to much porn on this site and by porn I don't mean artistic nudity I mean full on distasteful drawings of cartoon women naked so its nice to see somewhat of a protest piece get attention

I absolutely love this. I'm all about women being able to express their sexuality and nudity is beautiful in art and has a very natural feel to it. However, time and again, I've seen that defense misused. An extreme example, but an example none the less, would be a woman in a fancy pose essentially havin' a gay old time with a broom in her hooha. This is not a feminist expression of exploring self sexuality. It is designed for men. Not women.

Everyone is so afraid to talk about the INCREDIBLY fine line between sexual freedom and sexploitation, but it is there. There has to be a happy medium. A compromise. An acceptance of nudity, sexuality, and everything without the clear exploitation of women. I've always stood firm on the fact that I'm not bothered by general sexploitation, however there has to be equal footing. I would happily keep my mouth shut about those metal bikinis if there were also metal banana hammocks. I've too often heard from my male friends and counterparts that they "don't wanna see that," but what makes them think all women want to see titties everywhere?

So, thank you for saying what you have said. There will always be people on the anti censorship bandwagon that will throw muck in your face, but they're only worth listening to when they stop censoring female desire of sexualized men or stop censoring male nudity the way that they have stopped censoring women.

I apologize if this is all over the place, but...you know...rants.

Especially becuase one is always, always in the top 24 of the month.

I have mixed feelings on "nude art" I leave my mature filter off because nudity doesn't bother me and I do find some of the nue images to be very tastefully done but then there is the image shots of just someone's random vagina taken with a poor quality camera where I just think the person is starving for the wrong kind of attention. I do wish that photographers and models would actually use the mature tag more often so as not to offend those that don't want to see a bare butt on their screen. Basically if the model is naked to me it needs a mature filter regardless of if the privates and nipples are tastefully covered up or not.
Art itself is very objective(i think that's the word I'm looking for) in that each person sees a piece of art differently and has different views of what art is and isn't. Architecture = art we live in. Sex = the art of making an intamate bond with another. Animation = the art of moving images to tell a story. Poetry = the art of using words to move one's heart. Murder = the art of killing. I think you get the idea, everything in life can be considered a form of art to anyone that breaths.

So very YES.  I used to spend a lot of time on DA. Now I find I just want to walk away, I barely get here once a week if that often.
While its true that you can slap a signature on just about anything and 'call' it art that doesn't mean it is really art.
Too much poor or even pathetic quality work is given massive approval not because its artistic but because it shows tits or ass. No other reason.
There have been some really good posts defining the difference between art and pandering but it seems no one, not even the DA reviewers has ever honestly read them.

If it hasn't, it's the result of a craft or nature.

Everything you stated, I pretty much completely agree with, in fact I'm genuinely having trouble coming up with a response because of that, so if my response does come a little bit sloppy I apologize, but hopefully you'll see the point I'm getting at here

I guess all I can say is that the generalisation of women in the media has caused a lot of people to believe that women flashing their bits and bobs on social media for everyone to see is totally alright, whereas if a man were to do that it would be flagged immediately and removed for being "Pornography" or "Inappropriate" and even then Pornography technically IS an art form, and by that logic it shouldn't be removed but instead kept there. However, action should be taken to prevent the people who are not interested in that kind of thing by putting a mature content filter on it, instead of leaving it open to those who aren't interested in that type of art, which in this case is the majority.

I feel like this came along a little bit sloppy and again, I apologize I just find it hard to respond to something like this with a personal opinion without sparking some kind of controversy from people who don't necessarily agree with me. And finally, once more, for the last time, I apologize if this came out sloppy xD But there ya' go.

JustinMLindner In reply to Grycho [2014-12-10 21:48:30 +0000 UTC]

No they are 2 separate art forms. And you are kind of splitting hairs with erotica vs porn anyway but regardless, according to the dictionary art is:

1.
the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

So, porn can totally be considered an art form.

Art doesn´t have to follow any moral standarts. In fact some of the best art is always been amoral. If some Women want to be seen as objects it´s their own choice, not every women has to fit in your empowered, strong women ideal since tháts not how reality works, neither people or the world are ideal.

Ya see, it provides more protection then you think, hard to see how that offers any armor but it provides an excellent distraction to Male enemies giving an opportunity to chop 'em down.
XD

Okay, I'm sorry I couldn't help mahself.

I can't agree  more though, for once I'd like to look up amazing anime-style artists on this site without a ton of Hentai groups showing up.

I view it as: The Human body IS art (that is very true, I mean the human form is the most complex and most difficult to draw so being able to draw an almost nude person in my opinion is amazing)  but a womans body is much more... "pleasant"(?) to look at then a mans... that's why I think they seem to allow this kinda crap on this site, or at least that's their reasoning on it being okay.

I don't agree with it and as a 20 year old conservative male who has tremendous respect for women, I wish that that all the women who post revealing art in the name of empowering their gender would wake up and see that it is just contributing to the problem by encouraging women to be viewed as objects.

You say ass is not art, so I guess the breasts and vagina are fine as art?  Otherwise, you should have worded this quite differently.  Also, its very difficult to moderate stuff as such, because art is subjective, what you see as art may not be art to others and visa versa.

I feel the same way about dA but here's some things to remember:

There's no real moderation in dA and Not enough people care enough to strive for change of this matter.

A lot of dA is nothing but blatant porn, some is  pics of guys waving their dicks around, others are women with extremely low cut tops just to garner free stuff from people.
There's so much borderline stuff like fanfics, "artsy" porn, etc.

What more there's no way for dA to moderation the extreme amount of stuff that comes into it's databases all the time unlike imgur, etc.

In the end it's an inevitable and unwinnable fight. dA is pretty laughable atm as really the best way to show your art is to make your own blog or website and put your art up there. Otherwise your actual art that isn't Sonic porn or dickpics will be dorwned in that stuff. I personally love dA but now and more so everytime I visit here I wished it was better but all they do is make more regulations that seem to do nothing but protect the porn.

sarehptar [2014-12-08 01:30:07 +0000 UTC]

I think that a lot of people who make the argument that "If people (aka mostly sexy ladies) want to model, just let them and shut up" work on a mystical assumption that people (including sexy women) and their decisions about what art to produce are not influenced in any way, shape, or form by culture and what sells.

The question we should be asking is not whether or not naked posed asses and fetish portraits are really art--but why women feel motivated to model themselves in this way in the first place.

If borderline porn portraits are what makes women feel empowered in our society, while images of women doing things like desperately needed charity and relief work, or working in labs to cure cancer or in classrooms to teach our kids rarely if EVER appear on the popular page... there's something wrong at the root of the matter, and no mature content filter alone could ever fix that.

I used to be able to visit the popular pages with family members in the room. I can't anymore, even with my content filter on, and that is just sad.

I got to agree with this. And not only a single bit.

Even without the mature filter many pieces that should own a mature tag are going around like nothing and are cared like a simple Picture of a potato.
It's nothing Special, until you draw a face on it. Though the actual Point being here is taht just showing off like a stripper ain't art. Sure, you can Dance
'n' stuff but afterall, you get focused as a sex-object, not an art Piece. Many People here Forget that there are actual Pictures of artistic nudes and someone
would actually like it and let you, and theres the (roughly said) actual pr0n's and selfies even showing off their boobs n stuffs without hesitation.

AFTERALL, DEVIANTART IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PORNSITE FOR PEOPLE TO FAP TO!

Seriously, theres a way to Show off and not be a frick object but something someone else can actually admire WITHOUT getting a boner!

So, I stated my opinion, I don't mind how much you hate me, have a good day.
