Description Time for the next set of KTS races, the Undead!

And finally it's the time of the Ghouls.

The Ghouls aren't a true race in and of themselves, but really a mutation of mortals brought about by a curse.

If a mortal devours the flesh of their own kind, whether because they are starving or demented, they will slowly begin to transform into a Ghoul. These twisted creatures are pale, grey skinned and hairless, with large jagged teeth that stick out of distended jaws. They are always ravenous, always seeking to feed, and can't tell friend from foe. Though the curse is believed to originate with Humans, any mortal creature that succumbs to cannibalism will eventually turn into a Ghoul, meaning packs of Ghouls can be quite diverse in terms of individual sizes and physical states.

Individually a Ghoul is not much of a danger, whilst they might be a struggle for a single armed man, they are no match for a well equipped adventuring party. However during times of strife, famines are common, and despite knowing the danger, many poor souls cannot resist the hunger and succumb to eating human flesh in order to survive. In doing so however great numbers of humans might turn into Ghouls at the same time, overrunning villages and occasionally entire townships. Such events are known as 'Ghoul Plagues' and are a constant risk in times of war and crop failures, not to mention sieges.

Yeh Ghouls and Wendigo's are basically the same thing, well depending on the setting. Wendigo's are sometimes shown as big white furry creatures like Yeti's.

After seeing all of those race and concepts really makes me want to share my own characters and concepts to you. Especially my necromancer, would love to see her in your style but that would most likely be for a commission.

Well thanks man, and that sounds like a neat idea, unfortunately I'm not taking commissions or even requests at the moment, my other work is taking up too much of my time to do them properly. However I have been thinking about offering up paid commissions as part of some new Patreon rewards, and that seems like a kind of popular idea. If I do decide to start doing that I'll make a blog/journal post here to let everyone know

It's really creepy how cannibalism induced diseases are actually a thing in the real world. Ever heard of Kuru, which one of the native peoples of Papua New Guinea suffer from due to one of their burial customs being the devouring of the brain of the deceased?

Yeh, funnily enough I actually had heard of that but never knew the name of it (I'd always just heard of it as 'that disease you could get from cannibalism') but yeh, that's pretty messed up.

And of course as you say that's real life, so imagine how much worse it can get in a fantasy setting, and well, then you get Ghouls

by any chance will you be doing reference sheets to non-humanoid creatures too?

Not for a while unfortunately, I've actually stopped doing the humanoid reference sheets completely, and started to focus more on individual character designs to help expand my drawing abilities there.

Ah. Oh well. Would be neat having references to fauna as well. Coming up with one's own takes on races is already an interesting prospect, but seeing people come up with their own spins on the fauna/monsters is also a lot of fun. I've done notes on a few monsters for Elarn, and so far I'm rather happy with two specific ones.

Good to hear it dude!

Yeh I would like to go back and design more creatures and things, perhaps even flora aswell as fauna , but right now I've still got lots of other stuff to do first

Sounds very much inspired by the legend of the Wendigo.

Oh yeh, this is straight out of Until Dawn

Hehe, though seriously every culture has a creature that can fit into this type, the idea of literally losing your humanity when you stoop so low as to eat human flesh is pretty much universal.

It is a common taboo.
