Aphrodite, Goddess of love and beauty.

She was born from the foam of the sea after Cronus cut Uranus' genitals and threw them to the sea.
Aphrodite was the wife of Hephaestus, the ugly and lame God of fire. Ares, God of war, was among her lovers and in the later mythology he appeared as her husband.
She was the rival of Persephone, queen of the underground world, for the love of the beautiful young Adunis.

Perhaps the most famous legend about Aphrodite is related with the war of Troy. Eris, Goddess of strife, was the only God who wasn't invited to the wedding of the king Peleus and the nereid Thetis. Resentful, she threw a golden apple in the banquet that was destined for "the most beautiful". When Zeus refused to choose among Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, the three Goddess asked Paris, prince of Troy, to choose.
Each of them tried to bribe him: Hera offered him to become a powerful ruler; Athena, that he would win a military renown, and Aphrodite, that he would get the beautiest woman in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite as the loveliest one and as a reward he chose Helena of Troy, the wife of the Greek king Menelao.
Helena's kidnapping by Paris caused the war of Troy.

Her equivalent in the Roman mythology is Venus.
