Description I continue to be infatuated with this picture by Hinoraito

As much as I really want to learn digital painting, I thought it'd be better to start with the basics. So I attempted to render a copy in charcoal, as few lines as possible, just using values to separate areas.

It takes up about half a sheet of 11 by 17 sketch paper so it won't fit on my ultra-cheap scanner. So I just took a photo. Makes it look way grainier than in person. Oh well.

Toward the end when I held up my little value scale cheat card [link] I found that I was already pretty close. I think if I did a few hundred more of these kind of studies, I might actually get better at rendering.

First of all, thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoy it.

Next, don't get too discouraged. I've been drawing on and off for years but there's probably only about two or three solid weeks of practice involved for someone who was dedicated.

Get a copy of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, then find the public domain copies of anything Andrew Loomis wrote. Then find artists you like and copy them.

Purposeful practice gets you results this mediocre really quick. We're talking dozens of drawings, not hundreds or thousands.

(It just took me a decade to quit doodling around and actually practice drawing with a purpose.)

Thank you. I was focusing more on value and shading than proper proportion so the eyes went well, derpier than I intended. In the original painting you can discern the smile in the eyes, I managed to lose that. But for a first earnest attempt at rendering without line, I'm proud of it...
