Description
terracotta clay, 6"I have always enjoyed creating highly detailed figures, but have struggled with the abstract. My goal was to pull away from all the fine details of the sculpture, and focus instead on the overall landscape of the form – on the lines, curves and surfaces, to convey the feeling and emotion of the composition. The abstract leaves space for the observer to interpret – to fill in the details from their own experience. It asks questions, and then steps back to allow the observer to answer.
As this piece developed, I began to sense how she was trapped between the earth and sky. Often, we are faced by the reality of what we deeply believe to be true, opposed to the reality of what we see around us with our eyes. Is it possible that both are true in some way, at the same time, and our task is to learn to live, suspended in the space in between?
(This is actually a re-imagining of a piece I've done before, which I gave to a very dear friend in Italy while I was there.)
