Description
EDIT: "Sugar cookie" is definitely not an official Disney term...it's my name for all the European Disney princesses. Like sugar cookies: sparkly, white, sometimes too sweet for their own goodEDIT #2: I'm not ripping on Disney! I LOVE and TOTALLY COMPLETELY ADMIRE Disney and their artists! I think I was trying to be funny, except everything I noticed about Disney's stylization came across as caustic.

This is really cute! I like it it, and it's very informative, and I like how you pay attention to a variety of details.
The only thing I would say is not to refer to the non-white princesses as being 'exotic' and maybe censor the g-slur if not eliminate it.Β
Otherwise, this tutorial is a great look into the all-powerful Disney style and variety within it, good job!

This is really helpful, I read an article that many Disney fans want more princesses of different nationalities or ethnicities, we already have several Caucasian princesses.

That would be an interesting conversation, what kind of Disney Princess would people rather see next? What would you pick out of this list?
A blind or deaf princess,
An amputee,
A wheelchair bound princess,
A nationality/ethnicity that has not been done yet (please specify),
A plus size princess,
A same sex princess(es),

I get that you weren't hating on Disney's style, but what I take issue with is that you use one particular example of what a real woman "should" look like, and then compare to it to the Disney one to show how exaggerated the Disney girl's features are. But there are plenty of women with more demure shoulders and slightly larger heads. You seem to be implying that Disney's idea of female beauty doesn't exist in the world, but it is quite possible to have a figure somewhat close to the Disney one.

Very interesting Tutorial.
I am a Big Disney Fan too.
Yes indeed Disney is greatly promoting their princesses to have those Big Beautiful eyes, and very slim waists. That's cool about it. I like it.
But Why they don't apply this on their Disneyland Mascot characters also?
Bell at all Disney parks is very Fat

You know whats funny? I never read this till today and I followed the rules! BUT I made a heavy set princess! [link] this is me as a Princess. Its from Mirror of the Soul an actual project and story I am working on. Anyways um....I kept the shoulders demure, I kept the waste smaller than the rest, though she's chubby. LOL Interesting how this all flowed out so well.
I have bigger boobs than I gave myself in this image, the corset thing really helped bring those down! LOL. This is my fav version of the Michelle style so far. I hope you'll take a look and see that I did follow this tutorial's suggestions without actually having read it. So she does follow the Disney Rules (like I tried) BUT she's chubby!
Michelle

I "got" your sense of playfulness with the tutorial and was amused by it. And I certainly didn't see much difference from what you did talking about "Disney" style than what others do when speaking about stereotypical American Superhero/heroine comics style or manga/anime style. If people say that your tutorial comes off sounding this way or that way, well my opinion is that ANY tutorial can come off sounding either too boring, dry and technical (if you take all the fun out of it and stick to just the technicalities) or arrogant and know-it-all-like (if you try to instill a bit of humor to the endeavor) just depending on the learner's point of view. You are never going to win with all people when it comes to something like that. (And if they didn't care to learn that particular thing then why read the tutorial or critique it? That would be like a surgeon criticizing the training lesson for an apprentice electrician.) Makes one appreciate what teachers deal with daily doesn't it? [Best advice I got was from a pottery teacher: Even if you think no one will ever care or bother with this old ugly piece; don't discard it. Smash your old stuff into tiny pieces and then bury it or someone will find it and it will come back to haunt you. That I can promise you.]
Just a side-note, but speaking of the currently popular Japanese "manga" style that many Western artists are trying to emulate; it's a well-known legend that Tezuka (Astro Boy) got his big-eyed character designs by emulating what Disney was already doing with his characters like Mickey and Snow White. So I love your description of "sugar-cookie" child-like big eyes because that does describe rather well the big eyes of both styles. It's interesting to note that if you look at Shoujo manga girls and Disney girls you'll some definite similarities. Big doe-like eyes, odd-sized head to body ratio, super-elongated legs with tiny feet. Check, check, check and oh yes, check. Odd that I don't hear outrage over the fact that that drawing style has slowing been growing in popularity especially among kids and young adults. Especially when the shoujo manga drawing style makes everyone look like odd adult-sized child-like caucasians as well and it comes a from a culture that has distinct ethnic features which they purposely never feature in that popular style. It's just another stylistic way to simplify and aesthetically idealize the human form. It's not reality. We've been doing it for millenia. I'm pretty sure the Egyptians didn't think people should really try to walk and look as they did in their paintings. People need to relax.
Anyhow I'm happy to have discovered you via the Facebook link but am disheartened that by linking your image dA may drive you away because people on Facebook feel like they can be horribly cruel and not even take the time to actually come to your site and read through the whole tutorial and your comments at the end. I've seen this happen several times to other artists. It makes me question anything that I've posted or will post and whether I should even stick with this site . But I also realize that you will find rude and callous folks anywhere you go and the anonymity of the internet brings them in droves. Haters just look for something to hate and bring themselves up by knocking others down and delight in typing out twisted truths and poorly disguised insults that they would never say to a person's face.
So chin up Oceanstarlet, and keep drawing and posting! You have a cute and fun style and I'd love to see where you take it! (I especially love the recent speed drawings of your friends! They have such a spark of liveliness to them!)

I don't blame you, it's the DA facebook article, it basically highlights only the upper part, and makes it seem like a negative critique on how Disney doesn't make women look like "real" women. The Deviantart comments themselves actually seem to reinforce that assertion.
