Description EDIT: "Sugar cookie" is definitely not an official Disney term...it's my name for all the European Disney princesses. Like sugar cookies: sparkly, white, sometimes too sweet for their own good

EDIT #2: I'm not ripping on Disney! I LOVE and TOTALLY COMPLETELY ADMIRE Disney and their artists! I think I was trying to be funny, except everything I noticed about Disney's stylization came across as caustic.

Sigh.
The sarcasm in this was completely overwhelming and made you, honestly, look completely immature for the most part.
There's this thing called, style and artistic interpretation and the thing about all these images is that they are screencaps from the movies (which, unless you're an animator you wont understand that often when you're animating 24 images PER SECOND its understandable that some of the linework is a little sloppy and perhaps not all that anatomically correct).

But the thing is that if you're so upset and annoyed by Disney and their stylistic imprint, then why bother trying to mimic them? It would be far easier (and probably a whole lot better) if you tried to obtain your own style that you prefer and that would encompass your own beliefs and desires as to what a character should look like.
Rather than make a sarcastic tutorial that honestly could have been worked on a lot better and researched much more than throwing out all your own assumptions and such things. You might want to pick up and 'art of' book and actually learn what kind of effort goes into making animated features and understand that although women and ethnicity are idealized its of our own undoing and the way society works today that is commanding them...
Not to mention that, in more recent years we have princesses and women like Merida from Brave who is testing the stylistic boundaries set in animation entirely.

Long story short. Draw your own thing if you're unhappy. The world has enough of Disney and people who sit around bitching and complaining about them and not enough original style and people who actually work towards making their own name. Have fun with it you know?

I didn't get the impression that she hated Disney at all. It seems like the complete opposite actually. These tips are going to help me so much! She pointed out a lot of the similarities in each of the characters that I hadn't noticed before. Also, I think the drawings are all fantastic

Its a matter of wording and opinion I guess. She was coming off rather arrogant and ignorant if you ask me really.

Asldkfj sorry I've been looking at messages like this all day at it's kind of depressing. It's like, you make a tutorial when you're fifteen, and you try to be helpful and funny although all your sarcasm comes off as stupid and arrogant--because you're stupid and arrogant.

And then you're nineteen and a lot of your views have completely changed, and you are really embarrassed of a lot of things you said in this tutorial. But people are still going to get mad at you for what you said. It doesn't matter that the person who wrote the tutorial isn't you anymore.

I don't know, I guess I don't blame people for saying hurtful things to me. I sounded pretty bitchy and unlikeable, and the way I talk about Disney doesn't show them the admiration, credit, and I love I feel for their artists and their style. I love Disney with all my heart.

But I'm still getting really sad, because for every six comments that say "great tutorial!" there's one calling me an ignorant bitch, and the one stands out. I can handle it for a while but it's starting to get to me.

Anyway, I understand, and I'm so sorry. Age is no excuse for ignorance, which is what I was in this tutorial.

oceanstarlet In reply to TheBadPunQueen [2013-06-06 19:51:45 +0000 UTC]

It would be a lot easier. But I've never gotten this much attention on DeviantArt. I'm not that good of an artist, but I want to get better and I've always wanted to do little $5 or $10 sketch commissions for people. (I'm in college and poor.) I can't do that if I don't have any followers or pageviews.

It's also on a bunch of other websites whether I deleted it or not. And the NY Daily News just did an interview with me about it, so it'll be on that website too. There's kind of no right answer––I should probably just suck it up.

If you feel embarrassed of this tutorial, but need it for the popularity, why not do an updated version?

Personally, I didn't care for it because it ignores a lot of the artistry that goes into drawing these characters. I'm assuming that you know a lot abut that now too. You could give people some fresh insight, gain more popularity, and have something to point to when you say "Yeah, I was pretty silly in high school; I'm better now."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

oceanstarlet In reply to Nortya [2014-03-02 20:17:40 +0000 UTC]

I'm seriously thinking about it––I'd like to bring in some Disney character sheets as examples, add a heavy dose of Glen Keane ideology, and just plain make the whole thing more attractive. You don't think it would be dishonest, to replace it like that? (Additionally I've lost my F#@(#$(*@#$(@#*$(#*$ing tablet pen.)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nortya In reply to oceanstarlet [2014-03-02 22:21:31 +0000 UTC]

I would do it as a part two or a redux. That way you can say that you've clearly changed some of your opinions and give a bit of an educated look at the Disney girls without rewriting history. That being said, I don't know how you feel about this version. If you can accept it as just a rant by a teen then keep it, or if you're actively embarrassed by it, then put it in storage,

since a lot of people were saying the sillhouette on the left looks like a mans body.
If you want me to delete it I will.

oceanstarlet In reply to Emmerah [2013-06-06 19:24:09 +0000 UTC]

Wonderful job! I agree, the silhouette looks absolutely like a woman to me, but society has a pretty firm and narrow-minded grasp on what "feminine silhouettes" should be. I don't think we have that problem for men as much.

ToxicDL In reply to Emmerah [2013-06-06 11:04:27 +0000 UTC]

that's because people cling to an idealized idea of the woman body that is not at ALL accurate in most cases.

actually I love this so much it Shows how "perfectly" stylized and designed Disneys characters are^^ and I specially like how they made racial Features clearly visible with only slight variations! I would never gotten the idea to just make 2 nostrils to make the "flatter" noses visible from front as example

This is a good tutorial but in the future you should try to avoid the word "normal."
Also, I understood the sarcasm about the Sugar Cookie Princesses (lol) but using is the word "exotic" for the Non-White princesses is a little other-ing. I know that's exactly what Disney tends to make us out to be, but for the sake of the tutorial, it's probably best to stay away from the terminology.
Also, I never even noticed the weird face shapes of the Non-White princesses. Now I can't unsee it.

oceanstarlet In reply to MorganCerese [2013-06-06 19:15:48 +0000 UTC]

I know! Exotification is one of the grossest problems with society. When I made this a couple years ago I didn't even think about it, and the whole tutorial sounds really ignorant because of things like that. I'm glad you like it (:

Love this. Same goes for Tiana too. It was like Jasmine with a Disney Hawaiian nose. But everything is definitely true. Psh and people have the audacity to talk about Barbie. They're not the only thing messing with a girl's self esteem. Disney, can mess with anyone's. Shoot, you even said sugar cookie...which is like the majority of all princesses. Then the fact that the people of color's features aren't even realistic is just shady. That's why I'm a Pixar and Dreamworks fan. I'm on the fence about those films as well.

Actually, foot binding started to emerge in the Tang Dynasty but only became a trend in the Song Dynasty. So it's not wrong to say Tang Dynasty girls had small feet (some did practice it to a small extent) but most women didn't.

The fact that Meg look so different is because that entire movie was in a completely different style. Every character looked far different than in any other disney movie.. besides, greeks are european as well so Disney wouldnΒ΄t have made so many big chances because of that

That's actually how I had read it too, it was very confusing at best...
Employing its own terminology and blatantly ignoring a lot of the individual elements in favour of clumping everything together, for the sake of a..."point"? I'm wasn't sure, though reading the comments now I get it was in jest. Like listening to a teen's inside joke, that makes all the sense to them, but not to those not included.
