Description The magnificent Stirling Falls at Milford Sound.

Stirling Falls is nestled at the base of a mountain called Elephant Trunk which faces another mountain called The Lion. At 151 metres in height, these falls are three times the height of Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls trumps this with its width, however.

In this image, I have presented the base of the falls. The wispy shape of the falling water resembles ghostly figures suspended in animation, and the impact of the spray then creates the illusion of broken glass on the lake. Keen-eyed observers may discern shapes resembling faces, or skulls, in the mist; a tortuous ghostly face screams out in eternal agony as cloaked and hooded faceless figures look on at the spectacle before them.

I got sprayed from head to toe in the process of making this photograph. It was definitely worth the slight discomfort.

Edit: stoked at my second Daily Deviation. Thank you so much (^kkart ) for featuring me.

You are lucky to get to go back so soon For us, it's going to be years if it's ever to happen again. We'd sure love to, though. Four weeks were not nearly enough to see everything we wanted - and then there's so much more...

Limaria,

Well, it's not so soon, as I was there last April and May. I would like to go twice a year. It's relatively cheap to fly there from Australia.

Autumn and spring are unreal!

Thanks, again.

H

For us, the flight is 28 hrs plus waiting at the airports - one way So apart from the cost I'm not sure how often I'd like to go through this per year... Anyway, I do hope to return one day.

Limaria,

Lucky you! I visited Austria in May, 2008, and loved it!

Did the usual tour of the palace and an apple strudel making class, and ate schnitzel.

Lots of wonderful food and galleries -- highlights for me were seeing Klimt's and Franz Eybl's works at the Belevedere. I will definitely be coming back for more!

Very cool w/ the choice of ss. Though worry 5.6 isnt sharp enough perhaps? Something about the far right side isnt sitting well w/ me comp wise but really like the fg and main falls. Might rec 700px max height so it fits on the screen too!

aF,

Thank you so much for commenting and the constructive critiquing of the image.

In my defense, I was perched on the bow of a boat, being bombarded with water from the fall. Everyone else had cleared the deck; having a somewhat water resilient camera and lens combination made sure I was the only one on the deck!

Typically, I'd shoot something like this from terra firma at f/11 or f/16. I had no choice but to get what I could, very quickly, and, in that sense, I think it worked out alright.

I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the right-hand side. It's a bi-product of the situation.

Thank you so much.

r3novatio,

Thank you, my friend.

I would typically leave a scene like this in black and white, but, for some reason the tint just worked and I kept with it. I'm tossing up between the tint or straight black and white for print. Not sure which just yet!

But it's only my opinion.

Nice shot
Water falls are always nice to watch.

Niagra is probably more about the sheer size, not so much the height. I forget the name, but I think the falls in South America are the world's tallest. Probably attached somehow to the Andes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

octane2 In reply to EbolaSparkleBear [2010-02-05 13:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Omega-WereWolf,

You're right, Niagara Falls are about the size. This is a single lane road whereas the former is an enormous, multi-laned freeway!

I believe you're referring to Angel Falls, which are over a mile long. That would be a site to see!

Thanks!
