Description
I hate drawing robots, but I love Bumblebe. This IS the finished version.
I guess it shows how I put it all together.
Phd pencil
Zig markers
PSCS3
Can I just say that I'm EXTREMELY happy with his design for the movie? As long as his persona is translated correctly, Ill be happy. I think thats the point all the "Bayformer" bashers are missing out on.

i'm a huge fan of G1 transformers, don't get me wrong... but everything needs to evolve. and i think, much as micheal bay is a dipshit... the bayformers are a wonderful evolution.
beautiful drawing, i love bumblebee!

I saw the finished picture from commanderlewis but since you did the lines and everything, I just have to comment you as well! The picture is really incredible! Especially if you don't like robots except Bee! What I love is the alert poice and he just looks so much like Bee and it's just wow!

With your permission, I would like to use this picture for his shirt, but only if I have your permission. If you do not me to do so, then I will respect your descision. Please consider it. Thanks.

despite all these arguments which I felled to bother to read it all... cuz frankly I agree with Jmonterio about most of these points but I would still like to see how Bay takes this movie ... though I wish he didn't vamp Megatron so much :\ kinda irks me. Though I love the way you drew bumblebee, yes I know you didn't create it but i'm just saying drawings robots are hard... and to make it believable like this is amazing! Keep up the good work definitely a fav! By the way did you know they came out with a new Optimus Prime Toy that came from the movie!? That toy is definitely what I call transformers!! So long to the easy to pull open robot transformers welcome to the actual robot that looks and feels like a transformer when you transformer it!! It looks pimp... >.> yeah I really do like that toy cuz it potrays what transformers in toys should be...

I'm extremely happy with them as well. Bumblebee no longer has to settle with just cute. He can be awesome AND cute now.
As seen in the Leno clip with Bee' trying to shuch Prime and we see him silently emoting towards the other Autobots trying to hide in the Witwickys backyard despite their size. XD
Anyway. Lovely pic there. You see so wery well when someone gets the movie designs. Much like you don't draw a human with every skin pore or discoloration or vein you don't have to draw every nib or metal bend on these guys. They are complex because things are complex and as long as you boil it down to character it just clicks.
Keep up the good work and sorry for the rantaliscious comment.

I dunno man...this whole "pimp my transformer up" idea does not bode well at all...and IΒ΄m all for the tech stuff!

Oi1Bob In reply to JMonteiro [2007-05-29 13:43:50 +0000 UTC]
Understandably so, but the more I'm getting used to these designs, the more absurd I'd find it to be if they went G-1. Personally, I wouldn't have a big problem with it at all, but the kids and adults that didn't get goosebumps the first time they heard "The touch" might. Marketing is marketing, but I'm still inclined to give it the benefit of a doubt.

JMonteiro In reply to Oi1Bob [2007-06-01 09:14:37 +0000 UTC]
Oh, its not so much about the benefit of the doubt. Special effects being what they are nowadays, its setting up to be an eye-candy stavaganza. But the point is that these transformers have little to no resemblance to the ones many fans have grown to love.
For myself, when I heard that a movie about the Transformers was in the making, I immediately saw it as a popcorn movie - nothing fancy, just a few no-namers on the set with a truckload of CGI to impress the wide-eyed audience. I can live with that, hell, Ill even simpathize. What I cant live with is having the words "Transformers" and "Michael Bay" in the same sentence. I knew then, without any aditional footage, trailer or concept art, that the movie would suck.
And then I saw the concept render for Optimus Prime.
Its a known fact that when you convert (transform, geddit?) a comics character into a movie character that you need to change a few things that wont work on the big screen - for example, in the X-Men movie, Wolverines yellow-and-blue spandex costume would look silly, and so on. So, a bit tweaking here and there is inevitable, and the added detail at some things is even welcome.
But theres coverting and theres trashing - and what I see here, in all CGI glory, is somewhat of an aberration...Sure, it looks good, every bot has tons of detail, and oh boy, would I like to be able to do that too, but it feels akward and wrong- a gratuitous display of CGI tech know-how, rather than any true homage to the show.
You have quite a few Transformers you can only recognize beacuse of their color (Optimus and Bumblebee are your main examples) and some that are so over-the-top as to be silly. Megatron is a pain to watch, but have you seen Starscream? Have you seen Ironhide? Optimus one can still understand, it is the kind of update one should expect, and he looks good, all things considered.
But Starscream? Where as the leanness of the original design went? He looks more like Megatron than Megatron himself. And Ironhide -Jesus, how is THAT Ironhide? Never mind he isnt red any more, its the fact that its a completely new design that bothers me. New bots are fun, but when you label them with names you associate to a different bot altogether, you are setting yourself up for some serous backlash by the fans, who are obviously steaming.
Add to that what you know of Michael Bays career, and one shivers in dread...

You raise a lot of valid points, most of which I at one point agreed with full sail. It's odd though, considering the movie isn't out yet, how much debate is going around. Healthy debate is good, not that amateurish tweener forum crap typed in L33t, trashing the naysayers mom.
Personally, I didn't want to know anything at all about the designs, plot, cast, voices etc. until the movie came out so I had a fresh view of things, but talk gets around and I heard about the "Bayformer" designs and couldn't help myself. I liked the approach that was taken on the designs, especially when I got to see them in action. I'm all for it. Considering the latest installment of TF on the small screen had a PokeMon-esqe plot(I mean seriously, MINI-CONS?wtf...), I figure the movie couldn't do THAT bad.
I guess until the movie comes out, I'll be on the other side of the split.

It was inevitable that a movie based on a cartoon show with a couple million fans world wide would raise a lot of speculation before it was even shot. It was also inevitable that a large percentage of those fans would raise their eye brows at the mention of Michael Bay (who gaves us a few loving gems such as Armageddon, Pearl Harbor and the Island). Right from the start, one couldnΒ΄t expect Oscar nominations for such a movie - it wasnΒ΄t supposed to, at any rate. The fans were looking at mindless, edge-of-your-seat sfx extravaganza. We know it, we love it. For myself, I would have begged for a decent script, but with Michael Bay at the helm, that was not to be. I accepted, and moved on, waiting for it to be released.
When I saw Optimus, I didnΒ΄t dislike the design. I thought it was a tad over-blown, but no big deal.
And then I saw the other designs...
Now, donΒ΄t get me wrong: I like science fiction, conceptual art and sfx all three. I enjoy the conceptual designs for the work, the effort, the flow of the forms in conjunction with the parts you know are supposed to transform. Every single design i saw showed a huge amount of effort and work poured into it. If my poor pc could handle it, I would be doing 3D stuff for awhile, too.
What bothered me, and quite a lot of folks as it turned out, is that the design are just too much "pimped up". It would have been possible to do a "Transformers" flick, Michael Bay and all, with just a little less visual show. The design could look a little bit more like the originals and still look good. ThatΒ΄s the reason for all the ruckus - many believe itΒ΄s a disservice to the original show - Armada non-withstanding. I bought a few TF-Armada comics and I didnΒ΄t like them. Transformers may be a merchandise-driven brand, but the whole mini-Con stuff was a little too in-your-face for me to chew.
And the Megatron design sucked too.

All comments on Bay's previous works aside, the only thing you can really blame him on is the shot selection. The real people to blame regardless if this movie flops are Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto, the producers. The guys that got this project off the internet fan forums and onto celluloid. They've made a lot of sacrifices(Chrysler deal...bah!) to make the movie see the light of day and they're the ones who told us, the fans to blame them. Furthermore, they took notes from us throughout the franchises tenure, so you'll have to blame the fans as well. Even more so, Peter Cullen, the MAN, is completely behind this film.
I'm not disagreeing with you and I understand the points you're making about the film. I'll agree with you on Ironhide as well. Hey, even Megatron's supposedly on ice for the majority(or entirety) of the film, so there's no worry of him turning into a P38. Hahahaha

Dude I can't fricking wait for that to come out!! Though one of my friends did point out a good point... if they don't make it just right it's going to suck like hell! Cuz sadly evangelion is an anime so making it a real life movie would be hard... but still i'm up for it though they did change the design for eva 01 quite alot... especially the face... hopefully they don't stick with it cuz that would make me sad though they did design the Red evangelion quite good... to say the least it really looks like the robot and how it would look like in real life. What is Enders Game by the way? It rings a bell but still I don't quite remember...

I looked it up - itΒ΄s a sci-fi novel, of sorts, but I didnΒ΄t read it. As for Evangelion, anime - turned - life action movies usually make me shudder, because they are never done right. If this was done by japanese guys, you could bet they would have picked the actress that plays Rei and painted her hair blue...
As for the eva designs, you can expect quite a lot of changes in the overall design.
