Description
This is an overview of the most common hyper-jump-gates in the Milky Way and therefore in the entire Local Group.
For a better detailed view of the smaller gates, this is a close-up. Due to its gigantic size, the Covenant's space station gate is unfortunately only partially visible here.
A general view, on which all gates are shown in full, here: sta.sh/02crvg9t8zwc
Apart from a few small details, all gates use the same technology and are basically constructed in the same way.
Each gate essentially consists of two "components".
The so-called stabilization rings, which are visible on some gates and hidden on others, form the basic structure of a gate. Each ring contains additional energy storage cells, the components for generating a hyperspace window and all devices that are necessary to control the gate (computers, sensors, communication systems).
The second "component" is the jump-drive core bar, which is also visible on some Gate models and hidden on others. The bars each contain the actual devices for the hyper jump function. The most important of all, of course, is the jump drive, plus control elements, sensors and the main energy storage cells.
In this picture you can see, from left to right: on the far left the model used by the Union, the DeSCa and the tribes of Kobol, in the middle a so-called Jaffa-Gate, as this is the standard model of the Jaffa Nation and the Jaffa Empire. The small red gate on the far right is the standard model of the Lucian Alliance and the upper third of the Covenant's gate space station can be seen at the bottom of the picture.
The Union/UTK /DeSCa Gate is a joint development and production of the IUSP and the UTK.
The stabilization rings are made from the same organic material as the Cylon and Kobolian base stars. The manufacturing process for this material is a UTK state secret. Therefore, the state armaments factories of the united tribes take over the production of the rings.
The jump-drive-core-bar was developed by the IUSP and is also manufactured by it. These consist of a special composite alloy. The combination of these two special materials, organic material from UTK and composite material from IUSP, as well as the "original gate parts" make this gate model extremely efficient, which means that this model is at the same time energy-efficient, personnel-saving and low-maintenance. However, compared to the other models, the production of this model is relatively difficult and takes time. Only the Covenant Gate station are more difficult to build.
The IUSP and the UTK also make these gates available to the DeSCa for their intergovernmental TGN. Due to its efficiency, this model is the most suitable of all models for the DeSCa.
For the Union it is also important that this gate model is particularly well suited for long-distance jumps, i.e. for use as an intergalactic gate.
The Jaffa-Gates consist mainly of standard Jaffa materials and technologies that have been tried and tested for thousands of years. This makes the Jaffa-Gates extremely robust and resistant. In this way, Jaffa-Gates can also be set up in regions of the galaxy whose conditions are disadvantageous for the other gate models (active stars, nearby asteroid fields, energetically charged gas clouds).
In addition, this gate model does not require a specially built space station to control the gate, as the pyramid on every jump-drive core bar has crew rooms, so these gates can be controlled directly.
And there are some Jaffa gates that even have weapons and shields and can thus be used in militarily unsafe parts of the galaxy.
The disadvantage of this model is the relatively high manpower requirement and that it is also very poorly performing, i.e. fewer jumps over shorter distances.
But their construction is the simplest, through the use of absolutely standard materials and technologies.
The Lucian Alliance mainly uses the smaller gate models seen here, even if the Alliance produces some in the standard size. A special feature is the construction of the jump-drive-core-bar, encapsulated like the drive units of the ships of the LDPD. The disadvantage of this gate model is the short range, which is only around 40% of the range of the other interstellar gates.
The gate model of the Covenant is based on the Navalia-class spaceyard. For this, the dry docks in obsolete Navalia yards are being replaced by the hyper-jump gates. This simplifies the construction considerably. And the enormous main fusion reactor of the Navalia class, with a diameter of 4035 m, is sufficient to supply 16 hyper jump gates with energy. These stations also have powerful shields as standard, in contrast to the other gate models, and often they continue to have the weapons with which the space yard was originally equipped. The disadvantage of these stations is their relatively high manpower and maintenance requirements.
