Organic Armor:

The organic armor of the basestars, like the Wraith's organic spaceships, is a legacy of a research project by the ancients. Like the Hive ships, the armor is made of a kind of virus. However, in order not to rely on humans as hosts of this pathogen, which was not practical for practical reasons and not for moral reasons, the Cylons decided instead of using completely organic spaceships to equip them only with an organic armor. Over a metallic framework ("skeleton"), on which there is a kind of breeding ground, the armor is stimulated by a stimulus controlled by the central computer to the growth.

Not only did this make the sacrifice of one human superfluous, it also simplified the "breeding" of the organic matter.

Of course, the Kobol Defense Force also uses this approach. If for moral reasons, not for practical reasons.

Out of a total of twelve "arms" of the basestar, Six Arms are built with hangar bays, including the workshops that are necessary for the maintenance of the space fighters, and Six Arms are used as warehouses and weapon platforms. From the outside, the difference is recognizable on the one hand by the hangar doors and on the other by the weapon systems. There are no missile launchers on the hangars.
