Specificity:

  • newest ship class of the United Space Operations Command (USOC)

  • Like all military ship classes developed in the last 100 years in the Local Group, the Mandrillus era, the development of the Colorado-Springs -Class is a direct response to the Mandrillus incursions

  • the USOC has been severely tested by the surprising and unpredictable Mandrillus attacks on the IUSP worlds

  • although the Mandrillus are mainly resource seekers, this people have high morals and a complex code of honour

  • this is what makes their attacks so unpredictable, for often their attacks are morally or honourably motivated, they have attacked many worlds not to plunder them but in retaliation for a grave insult, whether conscious or unconscious against the Mandrillus

  • legendary the complete destruction of the settlements on the independent colony of Valea, a resort that has already been observed by the judicial authorities of all nations for violations of interstellar conservation laws, but nothing could be proven against the operators

  • details that do not interest the Mandrillus, because for them, to whom nature is absolutely sacred, poachers are the worst criminals

  • that is why they unceremoniously bombed the colony for hours until there was really nothing left to remind us of a settlement and aggressively prevented any further attempt at recolonisation (which in this case does not really bother any of the governments, on the contrary).

  • but the main problem was and is the extremely wide distribution of worlds in the Milky Way

  • Mandrillus attacks were/are often long over by the time USOC ships finally arrive on the scene

  • while this has also always been a problem with pirates, such criminal gangs rarely have much military clout

  • which means that even single corvettes or frigates, the fastest ship units of a fleet, sent ahead of the fleets, can successfully fight pirates long enough for stronger ships, such as destroyers, cruisers or battleships, to reach and defend an attacked world

  • but Mandrillus never attack with weak forces, this is considered dishonourable to them

  • because they always try to challenge the opponent in an appropriate and honourable way

  • however, single fast ships have little chance of successfully defending a planet until reinforcements arrive, while cruisers and battleships are relatively slow

  • only the Dakara-Class, originally conceived, designed and developed exactly for such situations, was/is able to bring massive firepower quickly to the scene of an attack thanks to a hyperjump engine, a licensed construction of corresponding engines of the UTK

  • but the Dakara class was/is too technically advanced, too large and too complex, so that these ships cannot be built in large and thus sufficient numbers even with the production possibilities of the 4th century AJR

  • in short, there have been more Mandrillus raids than city ships and even the Dakara-Class ships cannot be in several places at once

  • in this situation, the Council's*1 Defence Committee remembered that once upon a time the first Pah'mont-class ships had been built under the name "Project Utopia" as test ships for technologies to build city ships

    *1 IUSP Parliament

  • the Defence Committee therefore commissioned feasibility studies from several universities, including Carter University, Teyla City/Elizabethtown, Neterdewaj*2, the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, Tau'ri, and several companies, such as Union Arms, Chulak, and the Tech Con Group, Hebridan, on whether the Pah`mont class could be used as the basis for a new class of city ships, and if so, how

*2 Neterdewaj = in Goa'uld name of the planet Venus

  • however, these city ships were to be smaller and technically simpler than the Dakara-Class, but could be produced in large numbers and thus fulfil the original development purpose of the Dakara-Class as a "space fortress".

  • the feasibility studies have shown that the Pah'mont-Class can not only serve as a basic design for a new class of city ships, but that the ships of this class can be converted directly, relatively quickly and inexpensively into city ships, albeit with a number of disadvantages

  • Given the urgency of the problem, the Council decided to follow the recommendations of the different studies as soon as the results are known.

  • a Colorado-Springs-Class ship, in keeping with the various feasibility studies, consists of three Pah'mont-Class ships

  • like every class of ship, the ships of the Pah'mont class have to be modernised/overhauled at more or less regular intervals, so that the ships, while still operational in material terms, also remain operational in technical terms.

  • But after 90-150 years of service, depending on how heavy a ship's previous missions were, the measures for a general overhaul/modernisation/repair are so extensive that it is more worthwhile to recycle the old ship and build a completely new one

  • the hyperdrive and the associated energy sources are a particular problem, as these devices are a fundamental part of the ship's construction and can therefore only be replaced with great difficulty

  • and of all things, these aggregates have to be replaced after 150 years at the latest, depending on the model and technology.

  • for the ships that need these measures, the so-called "major general overhaul", it is therefore always a difficult consideration whether the ships should continue to be used or not

  • for Pa'mont-Class ships, however, the answer to this question is now fixed

  • when a ship of this class reaches the age for a "major general overhaul" and further repairs are required in addition to the overhaul, the ship is immediately taken to the depot for recycling

  • If the general condition of the ship is such that only overhaul/modernisation is necessary for further use, the Pah'mont-Class ship is converted to the Colorado-Springs-Class

  • in any case, this Pah'mont-class ship will be replaced by a corresponding new building

  • this is cheaper and more practical, as the conversion measures also include measures that would be part of the "major general overhaul" anyway

  • the hyperdrive and the ion drive systems are removed from the ships intended for conversion, which is relatively easy and quick, since in a general overhaul the installation of new drive systems is actually the difficult part of the construction work

  • next, the stern section will be massively structurally reinforced

  • so that three Pah'mont ships can be connected to each other at this point, which is done by an "island construction" into which the stern parts of the spaceships are fitted

  • this creates a triangular "recess" on each of the three sides of the city ship, formed by the hulls of two Pah'mont-class ships each, which form two sides of the "triangle", and the "island construction" as the third side of the "triangle".

  • this "recess" is "filled in" by a construction known as the "engine-clamp"

  • this construction serves as a structural link between "ship-island-ship" and to reinforce the external structural integrity

  • in addition, the "clamps " contain the sublight engines, since the ion engines located at the stern of the Pa'montClass ships had to be removed at the beginning of the conversion work

  • the "engine clamps" consist exclusively of propulsion systems, energy sources, control systems and structural reinforcements, spaces for crew members to stay do not exist, only three very narrow maintenance tunnels

  • due to the good experiences with the external gravimetric thrusters of Hi'nasho Space Drives Limited, the company was also commissioned with the construction of these " engine clamps"

  • Hi'nasho Limited additionally equipped the " clamps " with further weapon positions, which on the one hand is supposed to protect the engines and on the other hand further increases the striking power of the Colorado Springs Class, which in turn justifies the conversion costs even more in general (critics say that these additional weapons on the " engine clamps " are actually the reason why Hi'nasho received the order, all other competitors left this construction unarmed for static reasons)

  • no further conversion measures are necessary on the Pah'mont-class ships themselves, which reduces the effort required

  • the armament of the Colorado-Springs-Class essentially consists of the original armament of the three Pah'mont-Class ships, even the hangar decks are completely preserved

  • so the Colorado Springs Class has exactly three times the hangar capacity and armament of the Pah'mont Class, plus the weapon systems of the "engine clamps"

  • three synchronised HJE-17 USOC hyperjump engines are installed as FLT engines

  • the USOC-version is a variant of the HJE-17 engine of the United Tribes of Kobol, built under licence by the IUSP

  • due to the hyperjump engine, these city ships are also able to reach an attacked world in the shortest possible time

  • the ship resulting from these conversion measures is an extremely powerful and fast ship, surpassed in its values only by the Dakara class, while the Hammond-Class is at best equal, at least in terms of armament; in terms of propulsion, the Hammond-Class is inferior

  • but the success and satisfaction of the IUSP with these ships, which are therefore still being "built", should not obscure the fact that the Colorado-Springs-Class was/is actually a more or less improvised stopgap solution

  • the entire construction is relatively unstable, as it is ultimately three ships that have simply been "welded" together

  • the Colorado-Springs-Class is designed to withstand enemy fire very well

  • the design is even strengthened by enemy fire, as the external force of the fire virtually compresses the added struts (figuratively speaking)

  • in contrast, the construction of the Colorado-Springs-Class is relatively sensitive to the forces that arise during conventional movements and manoeuvres of a spaceship

  • therefore, the "TED" ion engines of the Colorado-Springs-Class are rather underpowered, even compared to the ion engines of the Pah'mont-Class ships, which are already relatively underpowered, which is why the Pah'mont-Class will be equipped with the additional external gravimetric engines.

  • the acceleration values of the Colorado-Springs-Class are therefore very low, but this was/is also necessary due to the construction method, as it simply would not survive stronger accelerations

  • basically, the Colorado-Springs-Class can only accelerate at all with militarily acceptable acceleration values through the use of the gravimetric secondary drive, which all USOC ships have and which is actually used for steering and otherwise only as an emergency drive.

  • also, the Colorado-Springs-Class would simply break apart on approach in an atmosphere

  • so the Colorado-Springs-Class is therefore also the only USOC ship class that is not even in theory capable of landing on a planet under its own power

(The Pendergast-Class and the Walter-Hariman-Class are in principle capable of landing independently, but cannot take off again under their own power)

  • the decision to use the HJE-17 engine, originally developed for the KDF's Metis-Class destroyers, a ship much smaller than the Colorado-Springs-Class, was also made because of the relative instability of this class of ship.

  • due to the small size, the HJE-17 engines can be installed in a constructionally more favourable way and thus the remaining space in the stern area can be used for further structural reinforcements

  • the forces involved in a jump are also less with this small engine, but the range of each HJE-17 engine is very small, mainly because of the weight of the Colorado-Springs-Class, no more than 10 ly

  • this is compensated for by the synchronisation of the three hyperjump engines, which enables the Colorado Springs Class to perform several jumps in rapid succession, practically in one continuous "movement"

  • despite these design weaknesses, the Colorado-Springs-class ships are a military success story

  • on the one hand, this means that many more Pa`mont-class ships that would have been recycled can continue to serve for decades

  • and that the USOC is able to fulfil its defence mission to a much better extent than before the "development" of this class of ship

  • in the fight against the Mandrillus, the Colorado Springs class has proven itself more than once, so that most critics have fallen silent and the rest mostly only make small suggestions for improvement

  • because efforts are still being made to improve the design of the Colorado-Springs-Class

  • but as is so often the case, if a design has somehow proven to be sufficient in practice, the incentive, especially for policy makers, for such "expensive" measures is rather low

  • therefore, the further development of these small city ships is at best a secondary project for the Development and Design Department of the USOC (DDD)nickname tripleD, usually not even this
