Specificity:

  • largest and newest ship class of the Stargate Command

  • like the Cowen-Class of the ETA/CPF, the Guardian-Angel-Class is a development of the Mandrillus era

  • after the first appearance of the Mandrillus in the Milky Way, DeSCa decided to expand the existing communication and early warning infrastructure, consisting of the "Hypernet "* relay satellite network as the "passive" component, and the "active component", the Galactic Defence System (GDS), consisting of remote-controlled unmanned aerospace crafts

*“"Hypernet" is the new name I will use from now on for the previous FLIN (Faster-than-Light-Network) system.

  • the expansion of the "Hypernet" satellite networks was not a major problem, as these were set up more or less automatically from the start

  • but even before the Mandrillus, the expansion of the GDS had been very difficult for organisational/practical reasons

  • the 300m diameter and 26m high control stations could only be transported and deployed by correspondingly large ships, an automatic distribution as with the "Hypernet" satellites was not possible

  • in addition, the ships had to deactivate the shields while they set up the control stations on site

  • since in practice the GDS was initially directed mainly against pirate and criminal organisations and less against extra-galactic threats, there were repeated attacks by pirate ships on ships that set up GDS control stations

  • originally, these were mainly civilian cargo ships, but their captains quickly refused to continue with this task because of the dangers involved

  • in the end, the fleet carriers of the great powers took over this task, but as a result they had to be withdrawn from regular service

  • but in the long run, this situation was not acceptable to the great powers

  • so the whole GDS project had not only stalled before the arrival of Mandrillus, but was about to come to an end

  • Kirak K'tarr, the acting Command-General* at the time of the first Mandrillus raids on the Milky Way, therefore initiated the development of the Guardian-Angel-Class

    * The commanding officer of the SGC is a 4-star general, official title "General of the Stargate Command", who holds the rank of a Command-General, introduced specifically for this position.

  • these ships were to become special freighters that now took over the construction/expansion of the GDS system

  • as the further expansion of the GDS was also expected to lead to a further increase in pirate attacks on the expanding ships, this freighter was to be massively armoured in order to be able to withstand fire from plasma weapons even without shields

  • these two demands by Command-General K'tarr led to massive resistance from the governments involved in the project

  • as a corresponding freighter would be very large and thus expensive due to the size of the control stations, while the armouring demanded by K'tarr made the costs explode further

  • but Command-General K'tarr, an Unas with decades of experience with politicians, was able to manage the situation through a series of compromises

  • the two most important were that the Guardian-Angel-Class was designed according to the principles of a multifunctional multi-purpose carrier ship

  • and that the ships should be given a hull of standard alloys, but should have the option of having ablative armour fitted externally if the mission requires stronger armour to achieve the armouring desired by General K'tarr

  • the compromises of the Command-General were accepted by the DeSCa General Assembly and the Guardian-Angel-Class was introduced as the newest ship class of the Stargate Command Space Fleet Service* (SGCSFS).

*Official designation for the space fleet unit subordinate to the SGC.

  • due to the original design goal, a ship for the transport and assembly of the control stations of the GDS, the design of the Guardian-Angel-Class is characterised by a large, disc-shaped, cargo hold.

  • because of this design, the Guardian-Angel-Class is also the only ship class of the SGC that does not consist of two interconnected ships that can be separated and then act relatively independently

  • the ships of this class are basically a huge cargo hold with a drive system

  • up to four GDS control stations can be transported in the cargo hold

  • but of course also any other kind of goods and, with the appropriate conversion, also people

  • there are also twelve hangars, eight of medium size and four of large size

  • the four large hangars are the main hangars and are mainly used to house the Ja‘A tugs needed to set up the control stations

  • the eight medium-sized hangars are used to house the Quirinus Mk II squadrons, which are used as on-board escorts or for combat missions if the Angel-Class is used as a carrier ship.

  • otherwise, mostly cargo shuttles like the MMEV-29 "Ant" or smaller cargo ships up to the size of a Tel'tak are stationed here

  • all twelve hangars, while not full hangar decks, are nevertheless designed along the principles of multi-purpose hangar decks as used since the introduction of the Pendergast-Class

  • this also applies to the main cargo hold

  • this means that all these areas of the ship can easily be converted for different purposes with the means available on board and can even be divided into several additional decks (main hold: 42 decks, large hangars: 8 decks, medium hangars: 4 decks)

  • the most important uses of the Guardian-Angel-Class are, apart from transporting goods, as a hospital ship, transporting people (keyword evacuations, maximum capacity: 2100000 individuals, but also troop transport), supply ship, mining ship (the SGC has its own mining operations, the Angel-Class serves as a mining base in asteroid fields, smaller asteroids can be mined in the cargo hold under protected conditions) or also as a tender/repair ship (here the cargo hold serves as a workshop, in each case in the required size), as well as a blockade runner

  • use as a fleet carrier is also possible, but does not make sense in practice

  • the difference in carrier capacity for the Quirinius Mk II between the Guardian Angel Class (16 squadrons) and the Concord Class (10 squadrons) is negligible in combat operations

  • the SGC therefore rarely uses the Guardian-Angel-Class as a fleet carrier, but is satisfied in this respect with the capacities of the Concord-Class, which are usually perfectly adequate for the SGC's peacekeeping missions

  • the description of the Guardian-Angel-Class is only in the category "fleet carrier" due to its construction, which corresponds to the design principles of modern fleet carriers

  • in addition to the cargo hold, the Guardian Angel Class has 72 cargo tubes, each of which can hold 2 Class-2-STCs or 62500 m³ of other cargo

  • this enables the transport of materials, e.g. for the repair of control stations, without having to use the actual cargo hold

  • the heavily armoured hull requested by Command-General K'tarr was replaced, as said, by an optional ablative armour to be attached externally

  • In keeping with the spirit of the Command-Generals, the ablative armour was made of the most resistant materials of the time against plasma weapons, such as staff weapons.

  • the first ablative armour was made of MQT17/05, a composite material of different trinium-naquadah-polymer alloys, which offered excellent protection against thermal and kinetic energy at the same time, tailored to Staff Weapon and similar weapon systems.

  • based on practical experience gained in the meantime with the Mandrillus and their "Magma" weapons, the MQT17/05 was replaced by the YKK18/25 for the latest ablative armour

  • this is a composite material made of various neutronium-trinium-naquadah alloys

  • this material is not as resistant to kinetic energy as the old MQT armour (kinetic resistance of YKK armour compared to MOT armour: approx. 70 %), but YKK armour can withstand three times higher temperatures (albeit at more than twice the production cost).

  • thus, the Guardian Angel Class is the only ship class of the Local Group able to withstand direct fire from Mandrillus Battle-Beast even without active shields.

  • for example, in the Battle of the planet Inzonides, which has become legendary, the Mondagy (Mandrillus for Mistress) Shaeen Caymarush, commander of the Mandrillus siege forces, abandoned the siege when she sighted four Guardian Angel-Class ships

  • she was aware that her Battle Beasts would hardly stop Angel-class ships from approaching and leaving Inzonides, allowing DeSCa armies to land troops and evacuate civilians at will

  • Mondagy Caymarush therefore considered further fighting pointless and thus dishonourable and withdrew after being granted an honourable retreat

  • however, the size and armour of the Guardian-Angel-Class also lead to the biggest disadvantage of this ship class, apart from the construction costs (twice as high as actually for a ship of this size)

  • with the optional ablative armour, the mass of these ships is enormous; fully armoured and with full cargo holds, the weight and the actually necessary propulsion system presented the engineers with seemingly insurmountable problems

  • each sublight drive system, which was powerful enough on its own to move the Guardian-Angel-Class, itself takes up so much space that the size and mass increased further, so that an even more powerful engine was actually needed

  • this created a disastrous cycle of required drive power and the associated additional weight

  • the engineers saw the only solution as not using a single large, heavy, powerful sublight drive system, but rather using several smaller, less powerful, lighter systemst

  • so the Guardian-Angel-Class has three different ion engines and one gravimetric engine

  • each is not nearly powerful enough on its own to move the Guardian-Angel-Class, only when connected together can they achieve the required values

  • but the four engines together take up less than 40% of the space required by a Tec Con VHSE18/39 ion drive that would be capable of moving such a ship as a single propulsion system

  • nevertheless, apart from the cargo hold and the hangars, the Guardian-Angel-Class actually consists only of propulsion systems and energy cores

  • and yet this class of ship is extremely weak in acceleration and barely manoeuvrable

  • it is a miracle that the Guardian-Angel-Class is still able to perform starts and landings from a planet, albeit very slowly
