The T-80O X-wing starfighter were the multirole starfighter of the New Republic's Counter Piracy Special Task Force (COPSTAF), which consisted of vessels from the “New Class Modernization Program”.

Characteristics

The T-80O X-Wing was an advanced version of the T-65B X-Wing used by the Rebel Alliance. The T-80O was designed with a particular focus on missions against fortified bases, both in space and on planets.

The T-80O was armed with four heavy LXI laser cannons and four MG13 proton torpedo launchers, which were also used on the A/SF-52 "Doomsday" B-wing. This gave the T-80O exceptional firepower for a space superiority starfighter. As a result, this X-wing was even better suited for combat against capital ships and other heavy enemy targets than its legendary predecessor. At the same time, the rate of fire of the LXI lasers was high enough so that the T-80O did not lag behind the T-65B in dogfight. The LXI lasers could be fired individually, in pairs or all at once.

Improvements to the magnetic flashback suppressors allowed the firing angles of the laser beams to be adjusted during flight, whereas with the T-65B the convergence point or "zero point" at which the laser beams would cross had to be set before launch. On the T-56B, the convergence point was usually set 500 meters in front of the X-wing. On the T-80O, the laser firing angles could be changed by -/+ 45° to the direction of flight during the mission, so that the lasers could either be widely dispersed or even more concentrated. Contrary to rumors, however, it was not possible to combine the beams of the LXI lasers into a composite laser beam, as with the CXXII composite beam laser cannon.

Thanks to the latest technologies, the number of torpedo tubes could be doubled. Although the number of torpedoes per launcher remained the same compared to the T-65B, the total number of torpedoes per starfighter doubled. A special feature of the T-80O's MG13 launchers compared to those of the A/SF-52, which was also armed with MG13 launchers, was that the T-80O could not only fire proton torpedoes from the launchers. Other missile types could also be loaded, such as Concussion Missiles or Mag-Pulse Warheads. This was not possible with the A/SF-52. On the other hand, the B-wing's launchers were capable of holding more than twice as many proton torpedoes as those of the X-wing.

As with the T-65B, the T-80O also had cryogenic capacitors in the S-foils, which stored additional energy. The energy could be distributed or balanced between the different systems via power couplings. Unlike the T-65B, however, these capacitors were not only charged by the power generator. The T-80O also had a high-performance solar panels on each S-foil, which was used solely for charging the capacitors, which were considerably more powerful than those of the T-65B. This meant that the T-80O, which was almost the same size as the T-65B, nevertheless had considerably greater energy reserves.

The energy capacity was so large that if all the energy in the capacitors was fed to a single system, the corresponding system could be overloaded, the so-called "burst" mode. In "burst" mode, the performance of the corresponding system was increased to well over 100% of the standard performance for a short time.

In "Burst" mode, for example, the engine power was increased to such an extent that the T-80O achieved 50% higher acceleration and 25% higher top speed. The power of the lasers was even increased to 250%. At maximum dispersion, they then fired a cluster of high-damage bolts in a wide arc, ideal for large-scale destruction of minefields. With minimal scattering, the laser beams were fired at an extremely high rate of fire onto a minimal target area, which significantly increased the penetrating power. Although it did not achieve the performance of a composite beam laser, it came close to its performance, which made this setting well suited for firing at heavily armored targets. In "Burst" mode, the deflectors could be strengthened to such an extent that they could even withstand single hits from a turbolaser for a short time.

The "burst" mode was intentionally excluded for the launchers. This decision aimed to conserve ammunition. Tests conducted on the T-80O prototype, which featured launchers with "burst" mode, revealed a significant increase in material wear, even with various attempted countermeasures. Consequently, it was observed that the launchers had to be replaced after each use of the "burst" mode, prompting the exclusion of this feature for the launchers.

Since no added value was seen in a launcher that could fire practically its entire magazine with one shot, a lock was installed that deactivated the "burst" mode for the launchers. However, it was an open secret among pilots and ground crews that this lockout could easily be disabled by an experienced astromech. The "burst" mode of the launchers was therefore unofficially considered an emergency measure.

In addition, there were external connections on the T-80O, with the help of which the energy stored in the capacitors could be loaded into external energy storage units. This meant that the T-80O could be used as a reserve energy store even if, for whatever reason, it was unable to take off.

Like the T-65B, the T-80O was basically controlled by a single pilot supported by an astromech. However, the cockpit, including the life support system etc., was designed in such a way that a second pilot's seat could easily be added at any time. The space for this was located in front of the actual pilot's seat and was intended to improve the multi-role aspect of the T-80O. This measure was primarily used for reconnaissance or EW/EM missions (see history below), where an additional specialist for either reconnaissance, communications or an EWO could be taken along, depending on the mission. If no specialist was required, the space in front of the pilot had connections for additional equipment. Or the space was used for additional storage capacity. While the starfighters usually had supplies for one week on board, they could be extended to three weeks for longer missions.

The T-80O's astromech socket was basically suitable for all models of the BB series, but the T-80O, like all vehicles of the "New Class Modernization Program", was most effective with an astromech model BB-12. This model was specially developed for the NRSDF, was more robust, had strong deflectors for its own protection and could store up to 15 hyperspace jump coordinates in its astrogation buffer. Nevertheless, some pilots preferred BB-8 Astromechs, as BB-12s, as purebred military droids, usually had a somewhat bulky character, especially in comparison to the more sociable BB-8.

History

The T-80O "Terminator" X-wing was developed for the COPSTAF special forces as part of the NRSDF's "New Class Modernization Program" and entered service in 16 ABY together with other spaceships from this program.

Officially, the T-80O was used in conjunction with other units of the COPSTAFs to target former Imperial Governors and Moffs who had turned to piracy, whether to fund their lifestyles or to continue their power struggles. The T-80O functioned as a primary air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical aerial reconnaissance platform.

The actual purpose of the T-80O "Terminator" X-Wing, developed as part of the disaster plan "Palpatine", came into effect after the "Fall Black" event, the complete destruction of the NRSDF. In this scenario, the T-80O and other units of the COPSTAF were to go underground and wage guerrilla warfare to support a possible new Rebel Alliance should the New Republic succumb to the Empire's attacks and fall again. After the declaration of the disaster plan "Palpatine", the T-80Os functioned as multipurpose combat vehicles.

In addition to its use as a combat vehicle, the T-80O was also intended to serve as the primary reconnaissance and espionage vehicle for a new rebel alliance, providing the new alliance with better reconnaissance information from the outset than the original rebel alliance had possessed. Thanks to the generously dimensioned cockpit, the T-80O could be used to transport an agent inconspicuously, for example. Thanks to a sensor package fitted as standard, which was very extensive for a starfighter, the T-80O could, as already mentioned, also be used as a reconnaissance and espionage vehicle in conjunction with an appropriate specialist. And it was also suitable for electronic warfare.

If no additional passenger was required, the additional space could be used to transport various cargo, allowing the pilot to operate independently of his mother ship for up to 3 weeks.

If the electronics on board were not sufficient for a mission, additional connection options for additional equipment such as computer systems and jammers were available in front part of the cockpit. If a T-80O was equipped with such additional equipment, the use of a BB-12 Astromech was mandatory, as only this BB model had the required capacities and programming to replace the co-pilot actually required for the use of the additional equipment to a certain extent in such a case.
