Description
Well, what a horrid abomination. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet being released made me wanna do some of those "realistic Pokémon" drawings again and for whatever reason I just had to choose one of the worst to make a realism attempt at. The idea was kinda to make Cetitan some sort of archaeocete which reverted to a fully-terrestrial existence soon after reaching the Protocetus or Rhodocetus-grade in cetacean evolution and then convergently developed some similarities with mysticetes but this monster is just absolutely horrendous. And making it a biped just makes it even worse, probably my most cursed "realistic" pokemon yet. But fuck it I'm posting it anyways. Also I ended up making the Baxcalibur a shiny one because I didn't realize the screenshot I used for color reference was actually a shiny until after I finished the drawing (who the fuck chose the colors on this shiny, it's barely any different). In the cold and icy slopes of the mountainous areas in the Paldea region lives one of the most abominable of Pokémon. Cetitan is a cetacean Pokémon, and genetic testing has confirmed it to be a distant relative of the marine Wailord, and yet there is a key difference between it and other cetacean pokemon: Cetitan is fully terrestrial. This Pokémon is believed to have diverged from the main evolutionary branch most extant cetacean Pokémon are part of some 50 million years ago, and though it did have semiaquatic ancestors, it is oart of a lineage that returned to a fully terrestrial lifestyle rather than develop into fully aquatic creatures like Wailord, Palafin and the legendary Kyogre. Some features across Cetitan's body are hints towards it being a more basal cetacean pokemon: most obviously it has retained its hindlimbs, but it also possesses short whiskers on the snout, visibly seperate (though merged by flesh into some sort of flipper) fingers on its forelimbs and nail-like hooves on its digits. It also retains features hinting at its semiaquatic ancestry such as tail flukes and flipper-like forelimbs. Cetitan is endemic to cold areas with abundant snow and ice, particularly favoring the high altitudes of Paldea's Glaseado Mountain. While most mammalian Pokémon use fur for insulation, Cetitan, like most cetaceans, has bare skin and instead is insulated by an immensely thick layer of fat under its skin. The creature also has several bony horns protruding from its face and base of its tail used in combat, both intraspecific and to defend itself against what few predators dare to attack this giant.
Whilst Cetitan is one of Paldea's largest terrestrial Pokémon and currently the largest known Ice type, they start life as smaller juveniles (though these are still over a meter tall). Commonly known as Cetoddle, these juveniles have only one bony protrusion on their head, the rest growing later with age, and also lack teeth. Whilst adult Cetitan tend to have only one offspring at a time, these social Pokémon are known to gather their young together into nursery groups, and around 5 Cetoddle can be sighted sliding across the snow in pods. Growth takes very long in this species, though it has been found that exposure to a mineral commonly called an 'ice stone' among trainers can cause a Cetoddle to grow much quicker.
Few predators are large enough to hunt Cetitan or would face a mother Cetitan in attempt to prey on Cetoddle, though one of the few that are large enough to occasionally attempt this is Baxcalibur. Baxcalibur is a large theropod dinosaur Pokémon adapted to survive in freezing areas, using a large hump on its back for thermoregulation. These big carnivores are known to hunt various other Pokémon living on Glaseado's slopes, and may freeze surrounding air with its breath to attack. It is both an Ice type and Dragon type, a typing it shares only with one other known Pokémon species, the legendary Kyurem, which also happens to be a theropod dinosaur pokemon, though this is likely convergently evolved as the two species are only distant relatives. Apart from thermoregulation, Baxcalibur also uses its hump in combat and as a display feature along with the feather quills on its arms. Pokémon trainers using Baxcalibur have reported that its attacks using the hump, a move commonly called 'glaive rush', is extremely powerful in battle, but also exhausts the creature such that it will become more susceptible to other pokemon's attacks.
Though Baxcalibur are large apex predators, this cannot be said for their much smaller hatchlings. Commonly called Frigibax, the hatchlings have only a small hump and proportionally larger eyes and heads, and tend to be only 50 centimeters tall. Baxcalibur tend to lay very large clutches of eggs at once, and Frigibax can thus become very locally common in the weeks soon after entire nests hatch. This increases the odds that some may survive to adulthood, though many fall prey to predators like Weavile and Beartic. Few even survive to become Arctibax, a name given to the intermediate stage of larger juveniles which have developed a large hump but are still far smaller than full-grown Baxcalibur.
