Description
Something made for National Pokémon Day (February 27), decided to do another one of those artworks of Pokemon as actual animals like what R. J. Palmer made. I decided to feature some of the Hisuian pokemon since Pokémon Legends: Arceus has the newest Pokémon when I was drawing this (the Generation 9 starters got announced just minutes after I finished drawing this picture lol) so here's a scene of Ursaring and Basculin in a scenario similar to what is seen in real-world grizzly bears and salmon. In the woodlands of various regions in the Pokémon world, especially in Johto and Sinnoh, lives a large and potentially dangerous Pokémon that could pose a threat to trainers searching the woods for their next teammate. Ursaring is a species of bear Pokémon in the Ursidae family, along with others like Pangoro and Beartic, and is an omnivore that feeds on berries, fruit, honey and sometimes other Pokémon and even the unfortunate human trainer. When rearing up on its hindlimbs (something it often does in battle to intimidate opponents) Ursaring stands around 1.8 meters tall and its powerful arms with sharp claws can land serious injuries that have taken human lives. With a strong sense of smell Ursaring can detect food far away or hidden underground and can be attracted to leftovers at campsites, and although it does hibernate, it may awaken in the middle of hibernation during winter to search for extra food if it hadn't fattened up enough before doing so. Due to their hunger in this state, active Ursaring in winter are notably more aggressive and dangerous than they already normally are, something that has been noticed since ancient times and written about by Professor Laventon in ancient Sinnoh (Hisui). Ursaring also have long tufts of fur on their shoulders for sexual display, which tends to be longer in the female. Trainers that have used this pokemon in battle or battled against it have even noted that some Ursaring even become more aggressive and attack with more force when they are burned or poisoned whereas most pokemon hit less hard when suffering the pain of a burn, something that has been dubbed the ability 'Guts', also seen in certain Machamp, Luxray and other Pokémon. Some trainers will even force their Ursaring to hold a burning-hot object called a flame orb to intentionally burn the pokemon so it will hit harder in battle, though it should be noted that doing so can decrease the longevity of the Ursaring and seriously injured it.
The cubs of Ursaring have a brighter orange coat than the dull brown of the adult, and while adults have a yellow circle pattern on their belly this is absent in the cubs which instead have a crescent pattern on the forehead. These cubs, also called Teddiursa, are fiercely protected by their mothers for the first few years of their lives. However while the mother Ursaring will still nurse and provide food for a Teddiursa, the cub will learn to forage for its own food from a young age, and Teddiursa has even been observed blending and fermenting fruits and pollen to create a sweet liquid similar to honey which it feeds on. In fact it likes this liquid so much that it has been observed soaking its paws in it so it can lick and taste it as it follows its mother foraging. Even from this stage the cubs are known to hoard excess food in various locations so it can eat said food later.
While Ursaring today only stand a bit under 2 meters tall upright at the best, there have been reports in the past of gigantic Ursarings reaching 2.4 meters at the shoulder while on all fours and weighing almost twice as much as the average Ursaring. Almost all these giant individuals were reported from ancient feudal Sinnoh, then known as Hisui, and it has been suggested that something about the swampy terrain in parts of Hisui that led to some Ursaring growing into this form. This is further supported by how these giant forms were capable of manipulating peat, a type of soil found in the Hisuian swamps. These gigantic Ursaring were so different from standard individuals that this form has been given a seperate name, Ursaluna. In addition to its size, Ursaluna also has different fur color from standard Ursaring, mostly being a darker brown with a lighter patch around the shoulders. Like Ursaring it also has similar shoulder tufts, but also has additional tufts of display fur on its back. While some Ursaluna also had the 'guts ability' or Ursaring, others have been noted to so bulky that even bullets and bombs did no notable damage to them, a seperate ability which has been dubbed 'Bulletproof' and is also seen in Chesnaught.
While Ursaring and Ursaluna are mostly solitary, it was reported that annual congregations occur at rivers where white-striped Basculin came to spawn. Despite its name, the extinct white-striped Basculin, a salmonid fish pokemon, was not the same species as or even related to the extant red-striped or blue-striped Basculin (www.deviantart.com/olmagon/art… ), which are two color morphs of the same species of Centrarchidae fish pokemon, and has simply convergently evolved to bear a similar appearance. Unlike the aggressive extant Basculin which bites almost any other pokemon or even human diver it sees, the white-striped false Basculin was reported to be rather docile. White-striped basculin lived much of their adult lives at sea but would annually swim upriver in large groups into freshwater to breed, having to even jump up waterfalls to reach the breeding grounds. It is at these waterfalls in this time of year that Ursaring and Ursaluna of Hisui were documented to gather in order to catch and eat the Basculin and fatten up on them. The majority of Basculin do not survive the journey and die before reaching the breeding grounds, but those that do will return to sea after reproducing and take the journey again in future years.
Some white-striped Basculin were lucky enough to survive many migrations and continually grow throughout their lives, reaching even impressive lengths of 3 meters (compared to how most were only a meter long). These rare massive forms were called Basculegion and were sexually dimorphic, the males having red tails and barbels which were instead light blue in females. Due to their sheer size Basculegion had very few predators, even the largest Ursaluna would struggle to kill one and penetrate its tough scales, and after reaching these sizes they tend to live very long and leap over waterfalls much more easily and some were even used by humans as ride pokemon for water transport. Because they were rare survivors of many migrations, the people of Hisui believed Basculegion's strength came from the souls of other Basculin that perished during these journeys. Unfortunately the white-striped Basculin and thus Basculegion as well have become extinct when urban development led to the damming and destruction of rivers which blocked off access to the mating grounds, and as such the large Ursaring congregations vanished too. Ursaluna have also stopped being seen soon after, so perhaps being able to gorge on Basculin was a main reason for Ursaring to grow so large.
