Description I wanted this to be the last upload of 2014 but ran out of time and it became the first upload of 2015.  To be fair, so far 2015 does seem disappointingly very much like 2014 but hey, there's still 363 days to improve...

Gerry is a bit of "an enigma wrapped in a mystery" but not in the way Stephen Moffat usually writes women.   She always makes me think of bus stops in the rain and a bunch of songs I can't link yet. Oh, except for this one .
Donny and Danny and their parents and weird Auntie Ellie (who babysits the kids when she's not busy babysitting these guys )! I want to draw more families this year, I tend to invent characters together with their families but so far I haven't drawn most of them - going to do something about it!
Larry Larate in a limited palette because GeekyReverie asked! But you'll be seeing him soon anyway.
Michelle and Mikey disagreeing about the holiday season. I thought of a Christmas-related comic about them so maybe I'll even do that before the next holiday season. I still need to figure out their home properly, so many settings, so little time...
If you got the Terra Nova expedition references you think Teague is a terrible person (and possibly so am I). Don't worry, Al will be rescued eventually and it could be some sort of karmic payback for this -

Leicester's boys - his son and his practically surrogate son, I mean his sergeant at the CID (no, they haven't met in the comic yet). Both doodles of Word happened so I could try figuring out his daft hairdo before I draw him in the comic again. I'm afraid the ponytail stays for at least two more chapters.
I firmly believe that the \/ smiley looks like Jarvis. I blame the peeps over at Smack Jeeves Forums for this discovery, particularly PeachLuna and butteredhugs ! While we're at it, you should check out their comics Nightwalker and Loud Era respectively.
And the little doodle with Kevin is dedicated to Cabin Pressure. I feel like drawing something bigger but I almost never draw fanart and I dunno if it can be even expressed in a picture... It's an end of an era. Cabin Pressure was one of those things that changed my life by existing, pulled me through many sad times, taught me a few things about writing (and just looking at the world, I guess) and I couldn't ask for more but I'm still sad that this is the end even if it's a brilliant end. I ended up drawing Kevin even though I imagine Wayland talking in John Finnemore's voice but more wheezy.

And that's it for now. I'm working on comic pages now but I did manage to finish my main doodling sketchbook before 2014 ended so I'm excited to start a new one.

I've said it before of course, but I love your limited palette stuff! Have you thought of maybe drawing a whole short with just a few coloures?

And that's a lovely Cabin Pressure tribute

Aw, thanks! Nah, I dunno, I might use limited palettes to emphasize a flashback at some point but I'm not sure I want to do a whole short like that, I get bored without using all the colours.

But I still have to do something with the colours you requested a while ago! I'm slow again it seems, but I'll start fitting more random doodles in after I finish the next comic page. It seems like the holidays didn't help at all - I'm working and feeling overwhelmed again (though I realise you have it worse these days)...

I have always loved your extremely diverse cast in your comic!  You really don't see many disabled characters in a comic, let alone a whole sleuth of them, all of which are treated just as regular people (as it should be).  I like your use of traditional media, and I feel you have a good sense of color and composition, but sometimes I feel that you have SO MUCH going on that it's hard to really immediately see the focal point.  One way you can handle this is to maybe cheat your colors a little bit, and start purposely putting lights next to darks in areas you want the eye to first go, or purposely lighten things out behind a figure to halo them.  On top of that, you can also consider how you can use compliments to maybe point the eye right at what we're supposed to first see!  I can tell in areas where you already somewhat do this (I see plenty of spots where you have more shadow or color behind a figure), but it is just something you can push a little further.  One thing too might be that a lot of your work exists on the same plane, as far as lighting goes.  Even foreground and background items seem to be treated with the same attention.  For example, in your Christmas image, most of those foreground items could probably be made a little darker, to unify their silhouette, as they're less important than the interaction between the two characters.  This could also be used as a device to firmly tell us WHERE the wheelchair lies (visually I think it's between the tv and and the tree, but as the tv and tree almost blend together, value wise, it's more muddled)

I'm just being nitpicky here, of course !

Another thing I really like is how much you push expression in your characters.  I love the exaggeration.

keep it up!  Nice artwork!

Thank you! And ooh, solid advice! I'll see what I can do there - right now my paid work wants me drawing the same way all the time (which can be frustrating) so I'm trying to push my personal projects a little further when I can, and input is always appreciated, especially specific like that so I know which direction to go in.

You're right, the wheelchair is between the telly and the tree but I see what you mean! I can definitely work on that and maybe post a new version of that picture around next December (I think it's high time I re-drew something old as an exercise but I'd rather start with older pictures).

I'm inking a page tonight but I'm excited to try applying what you said ASAP!

Wonderful!  It's tough as artists when we have work that doesn't push us!  Thankfully we can always do personal projects

And re-drawing art is a fantastic way to see how you've grown x3  I approach a lot of my larger illustrations, even if they're just "sketches" with a goal in mind.  Like "push expressions!' "Exaggerate shapes!" "Make the background appear like something you can travel through"  It just keeps the brain wheels turning

Oly-RRR In reply to kiki-doodle [2015-01-10 18:12:15 +0000 UTC]

Yup, I often have specific goals too! Never re-drew something old though, except for comic pages. But it's a slipperly slope with webcomics - like I'm not that happy with my first chapter visually by now but if I start redrawing that now I'll spend months on that instead of continuing the story and will still feel unsatisfied in another few months. So it's good to look back but in moderation, like with everything else I guess.

But anyway, you gave me some food for thought (and practice) and it's great!

Oly-RRR In reply to GeekyReverie [2015-01-15 20:10:26 +0000 UTC]

GeekyReverie In reply to Oly-RRR [2015-01-16 11:46:25 +0000 UTC]

Oly-RRR In reply to GeekyReverie [2015-01-16 21:04:52 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I see you finished your sketchbook already?
I love this pic with Gerry, now I see example of polished background. Btw, can you tell me how did you draw this sheets of rain? Of course if it's not a secret.
Donny's dad looks like my new doctor in younger version. xD But don't worry, it's a compliment. I like how they looks together, even if Danny isn't that happy.
I like Michelle and Mikey room, it looks cosy and I like these all details. Yep, it would be nice to see a Christmas comic with them.
Oh, Jarvis looks really happy and cute.
And... don't watch porn, use imagination! I wish you a happy and fruitful new year.

Oly-RRR In reply to BettyFontaine [2015-01-04 22:23:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! I meant to upload the photo of the sketchbook too but then I got lazy. I still have a bunch of unfinished ones but I'm still going to start a new one soon, right now I have no A5 sketchbooks with white paper.

I never have secrets when it comes to drawing (except I never remember names of digital brushes so it's useless to ask that - I dump them all in one folder and forget about them). It's done with white watercolour pencil and white marker (I swear by those, very useful) and some time. I'm not joking when I tell you to keep at it - I scribbled it fast but I still think I spent half an hour or more just so it would look like raindrops are everywhere.

I like to think Danny will feel better about all that as he gets older. But yeah, families are complicated...

I really want to draw that comic but I need to finish Piss Business first. At this rate it will happen like in April but better late than naver and all...

BUT WHAT IF IT'S VERY IMAGINATIVE PORN? Same to you - I hope this year will be good for you!

Please take some photo when you'll be in mood for, I really like look at your sketchbooks.

Oh, I have a white marker too, but fat one. I tired to draw snow with it, so I decided to make a test on some sheet of paper and... it ended with a big blots and stink in my room. xD
Yep, as you said drawings need to be polished.

Don't worry, you have whole year to draw it!

xD

I have a thick marker too but I draw snow with it a lot! The snow in the picture with the Nesses and Murray is done like that. I guess it's generally useful to have markers like that in at least two sizes.

Each of these lovely images deserves it's own upload. What made you decide to upload in bulk like this? I sometimes think I'm going to miss some details in them. My favourite has to be the one of Geraldine and the one of the Cunningham kids. The perspective in the former picture is just amazing. Then the curtains in the latter picture are just such a lovely colour and they add a real warmth to the room.

....The Lemon is in play... Genius
Is that Kevin with the lemon?

Oly-RRR In reply to alicelights [2015-01-04 21:52:32 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I've been told that I should upload them separately before because it's not like it's a bunch of sketchy headshots and such but I guess much like Douglas I don't have the "gift of self-confidence" - I keep thinking I'll annoy people uploading ten pictures a month instead of my usual five-ish pictures and I might end up feeling ignored (I know that if people don't comment it doesn't mean they don't like the art but it's hard to make myself truly believe it). And really you aren't missing much, the largest pictures here are A5-sized so I'm not sure there's a need for them to be much bigger (I think traditional stuff needs to be at least slightly smaller when presented digitally to look good). As a rule I upload all A4-sized pictures (and comic pages, which are bigger) separately but anything smaller gets posted with at least one more picture. But I'll think on it because sometimes I start having doubts if it's right!

I kind of lied about the estate behind Geraldine there - the blocks are further apart but I wanted to tweak it to show them towering and filling the sky. I often feel like that here, especially when I first moved here (from a much smaller town). I can't I don't like cityscapes and I also can't say I love them but I know I like drawing them - people often think that council estates and similar places are something that just shouldn't be pictured and I want to tell their stories, kind of like with people.

It's also amusing how in many crime shows they often use intentionally intimidating camera angles when shooting council estates, maybe even more than when shooting prison scenes - I'd like to see the same camera work used on scenes with quaint villages just for laughs. ...wait, that's probably what Hot Fuzz is.

I'm not even sure why I imagine the Cunninghams having red curtains. My grandparents used to have brownish-red curtains at some point and I think the reference I used for that picture had reddish curtains in it but it just feels sort of right for them. I'm not sure I'd get red curtains myself - I like red but more as an accent than the main colour (I have at least a couple of red hoodies though).

Yup, that's Kevin! He felt sort of right for this picture though I'm not sure why.

The Porn/Imagination rainbow is my favourite of all this, it does say a lot about my sense of humour ;D

Though the first piece with Gerry's beautiful, the lighting and colours of the storm clouds and how the rainfall looks just makes that piece stand out (as well as her grumpiness, lol).

Pfft, I'm a bit disappointed that picture seems to be all people talk about since it was just a silly doodle to practice drawing Word's hair without making it just a headshot but I made a rod for my own back there, really! I'd probably be really amused if someone else drew it so all is fair!

And thank you! I can't wait to introduce Gerry in the comic but I'm also ridiculously anxious about how the readers take her (though honestly I feel this way about a lot, it's irrational).

I can understand the disappointment, but don't let it get to you too much, you've got much more to offer. Though I'll take that challenge up, once I get back from vacation.

I'm sure she'll be alright. Like your other characters, they've all seem to have a likeable quirk/trait in them, you've got a knack for that.
