Description
There aren't quite in the order I drew them in but on Christmas day I started making at least one doodle a day as a rule - something I recommend to everyone feeling stuck because for me knowing you have to sit down and draw one thing that can be more or less anything as long as it's loosely related to your project really helps bump-starting the whole process. I don't draw these daily now because I'm juggling it with making comics and working on the script again buuut I'm pretty sure these doodles made the difference at some point!A lot of Nutter this time - because I haven't been drawing him that much for too long and because reworking the script naturally involves thinking about him a lot. Anyway, in the usual order!
1. A character who didn't get a proper introduction yet (and I'm still on the fence about whether I should do it ahead of time or wait till that comes up in the comic) so for now she is known as the Lady With a Cunt Mug . I think it's safe to say she is not a famous nurse... Oh, and she doesn't do family holidays.
2. Younger Nutter back in Salford. Not entirely happy how that picture turned out but you bet I'll try to draw something along those lines later, it's an important moment. I didn't tell you that.
3. In case you're wondering about Lucky's pink parka, Gerry is not progressive like that, she's too broke to be picky.
4. Chance, I think that irony miiight be wasted on Nutter... This would be around the same time as that stakeout and on a footpath ridiculously close to their station.
5. PC Nutter, bored and freezing back in Manchester. I don't think they had yellow safety jackets back then buuut I coloured it in at the last moment and it's just a doodle so meh. It's a doodle and all. I'm still learning to draw Nutter back when he was a nervous gangly rookie rather than the Nutter we know.
6. Mikey doesn't give a toss about his sister's tragedy.
7 and 8. A bit of a preview of a NYE-themed thing with a bunch of characters in it. It's far from done but I'm not losing hope to finish it before the year is over.
9. If Star Wars characters start quoting police operations manuals at you in a pub... NUTTER UR PISSED GO HOME!!!

I love the last panel. You've got such a talent for dark and moody lighting.

Thank you! Comes with the crime fiction territory, I guess... I get so bummed at my job because many editors want you to avoid dark colours NO MATTER WHAT YOU'RE DRAWING. You can be drawing a troll in a cave or a forest monster or a ghost in the night but god forbid you use dark colours, kiddies won't buy the magazine then.
It's not that I can't do bright but it feels really bland having only half of the colour wheel to pick from day in and day out.

I don’t even know where to start with these
Morinelli literally crushing the festive mood – best background idea ever! And just checking, but that’s not a collage or anything, right?? Cause that looks just like proper wrapping paper, with shiny metallic letters and everything!
Also, I feel a sudden need to see more of Chance and Nutter before things went terribly wrong. And those two sketched from an unfinished thing actually look really cool together just the way they are!
And maan, that last one! x) Can this become a series please? “Nutter gest off his tits and gets police manuals quoted at him by fictional characters” Like, next one could be a picture of Nutter outside a pub, getting lectured by a cloud that looks suspiciously like Mufasa

Ehehe, I'm glad you like them! I always get an urge to draw more right after I finish another file...
That is a bit of collage - I like occasionally glueing something patterned in the picture so I've been stashing wrapping paper and patterned paper and so on. I keep meaning to do it more often, it's fun every time but I can't always think of what exactly to glue in... Last time I did it was here (only in one picture) -
I've been feeling the same for a while - that it's fun to think of back when Chance and Nutter actually worked together and were both less miserable! There will be some of it in the "big" comic but part of that will be Chance's obviously nostalgic opinion ("guv was so great, it was brilliant working with him, like one time he pushed me into a pond for a laugh and it was way cool" ) so I think there will be more short comics on it all as well.
Haha, I think with the way Nutter is drinking this is entirely possible!
I sort of know what you mean - being a nerd is fun but THE POSSE MUST NOT KNOW! That and I generally try to find something to relate to and see things from multiple points of view when coming up with stories so I mostly sit there being all "yeah, you have a point... but you have a point too..." and then go and write ridiculous conversations in cars and stuff.

Oh wow, it is actual wrapping paper then! man, it's really well used, I was pretty sure you drew all that. And wait what? I genuinely can't find where you used wrapping paper in that one x) Where is it??

Teehee, I'm sneaky about it! And it's Bean's blanket - to be fair it's just paper with patterns not wrapping paper so it was really easy to shade over it.

Thank you! And it's just constant doodling, really, and trying to notice colours irl. I guess I just like colours, it's really hard for me to draw something but not colour it.

Always interesting learning new words and phrases from your comics. Would panto be like a Punch and Judy type thing?

Ehehe, I'm glad! Panto is short for pantomime and it's not exactly Punch and Judy, more like comedic musical theatre, usually around winter holidays and primarily for kids. Still a lot of slapstick and silly shenanigans but not puppet-based.

The young Nutter is interesting...he seems thoughtful and his face looks much less harsh and judgmental. The way he is now, Nutter is one scary guy I wouldn't want to approach.
LOL the last one is hilarious. <3 Didn't expect to see Yoda there. Yes, he is pissed as hell.
Mikey's sister has so much attitude.

Nutter has been working on looking intimidating pretty much since he became a police officer - he's ridiculously old-school and thinks that any civillian approaching him must be up to no good and is asking to be searched and hopefully arrested. But yeah, he wasn't like that when he was younger. I keep meaning to put together Nutter's age lineup like I did with Chance, but they take so much time and I'm never entirely happy with them afterwards.
I'll do it eventually, here's an old doodle of Nutter as a kid for now -
The last picture was fun to work on - sometimes I imagine random things being said in Yoda's voice and I realised I never drew him before and this had to happen.
Yeah, Michelle is hardcore, her crib is fatal, her posse is sick yo, etc. Or at least she'd like to think so.

HA HA XD I love the ones with "M" (that lady), Micky and Gerry (<-- because I love Gerry and Lucky the toast-iest most-est!). I also like the detail on Nutter's family home. Wow, what happened there? Did he hit... or get hit?

Thank you! Ehehe, I've been drawing Gerry and Lucky so much during the summer that now I CAN'T STOP.
Nutter was fighting (so it was both), though he's supposed to look younger in the picture, more like how he looks in the uniform doodle. I'll give it another try eventually, but it's a moment that should be in the comic anyway - though not in the first chapter, honestly I'm still not sure when exactly to bring it up. Nutter never enjoyed fighting though, he just learned to repress fear enough to seem intimidating, and if we use Ryan Draper's cop classification ("fighters, speed freaks and bed-wetters") Nutter would DEFINITELY be type 3.

Glad to hear XD I really feel like I can relate to Gerry. Despite everything she has a very emotive face so you can tell what she is thinking. Makes her extra lovable to me! It's like deep down, she is still looking for somebody to befriend. I think Chance is less easy to read. Nutter is at the other end of the scale. I have no idea what he is thinking! ...except when he has a gun out.

Awww! I think it's harder for me to tell because I know what they are thinking in each drawing but I think drawing expressions is a bit like acting - if you have a character with a poker face you still have to balance when it becomes readable enough to see emotion and when it's unreadable enough for the viewers to register it as a poker face. But yeah, Gerry is definitely more of an open book and Nutter and Chance are supposed to be harder to read - Nutter sort of has a layer of disapproval over every other emotion, Chance gets way less visibly emotional after the accident (I still can't get over how Felix in Cuffs is about as deadpan and has similar features, PERFECT VISUAL REFERENCE). I think being deadpan is a professional copper trait, though obviously not everyone is like that.
I had to make a conscious decision with certain disabled characters there because neural damage can affect expressions and gestures a lot and not everyone is used to reading that but I figured I'd rather draw something slightly confusing than unrealistic. Or Ace , actually - I'm so used to him that his face doesn't blip on the weird radar but I have no idea how everyone else reads him.

alicelights In reply to Oly-RRR [2016-01-15 21:12:12 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, I think being able to read facial expressions is a learned skill and some people aren't really that good at it. I don't think I've had many problems reading your disabled characters expressions. I think having a history of reading comics helps facial recognition - at least I think it's helped me. Also making stupid faces on my computer camera for references purposes also helps XD
I can see Ace's look of surprise in that drawing. However, some of that might be due to the context (his turning around as somebody speaks). I want to see Ace appear in the comic. It's interesting to have a character with a facial disfigurement in a story. I'm just listening to 'Moon over Soho'. Poor Lesley! ;______; I can imagine she feels really awful. it's particularly interesting since I consider her Peter's major love interest (like potential long term relationship rather than a quick fling).
That scene at the end of 'Rivers' where Punch is going to 'move on' and when he and Peter and talking... then there's this horrible underlying knowledge of what will be soon happening to Lesley. Actually that seemed to linger over a lot of the story - even when there was a lot going on. I felt that was believable. Aaronovitch is really good at subtle horror.

Oly-RRR In reply to alicelights [2016-01-15 21:30:06 +0000 UTC]
It's definitely a skill - I was so crap at it as a kid! I seem to meet a lot of people drawing cartoons who were the same, so maybe it's connected in some way, like cartoons help to develop that skill.
Ace would appear so soon if I didn't start rewriting the first chapter!.. But still, it's for the best. And Lesley is definitely my top favourite character in the series, I mean I love Peter and Nightingale too but OMG Lesley!
I'm not sure where you are in the books so I don't want to spoil stuff but I like how her injuries are also written in a believable and consistent way.
Yeah, a lot of it is so emotional - I don't get that weird dissonance that happens in supernatural stories a lot (we discussed it when we talked about HP, that whole "why aren't you traumatized by it?" thing). I think good reading adds to it too, I have text versions on my kindle but I like the audio version too much, it sounds so real.

YAY, the TROT-MAN is COMING! <--- at some point in the future
Oh I have a feeling Lesley will be doing later on in the series then. I'm about half way though "Moon" and she hasn't done too much yet. She makes a good foil to Peter. They're both level-headed but she is better at her job and more thorough/ professional. However, I feel like he would do better in a difficult situation or if he had to make a tough call. Her first thought would be to what would be proper police practice - his first thought would be what is best overall (or 'best for me').
I like how there is pretty much NO anger/tension between Nightingale and Peter! They're a different class, age, mentality but they somehow.... get on FINE. There is a status quo - master and student but there is also respect and honestly. I like how nobody seems to like Toby that much (maybe Molly likes him most) but he's still a member of the gang. It's the Scooby gang!
I love how Kobna Holdbrook-Smith can do all those voices XD I like how Nightingale sounds posh but NOT American-movie-set-in-London posh. A realistic voice. I'm not completely sold on Stephanopoulos's voice. She sounds a bit weird - sort of like a camp guy. Weird given I don't notice this with Lesley or Beverly or anyone else. I LOVE Dr Walid!
