Description
So I finished the sketchbook I did Inktober in and I'm back to the wonderful world of weird empty spaces because my doodles are differently sized (it's not that bad here because only one picture is from a different sketchbook). Except not really because one thing Inktober taught me is that it's REALLY NICE to flip though a sketchbook and get an idea of a couple of months of life inside my head instead of a bunch of random drawings starting in early 2013. So one of my new year resolutions is going to be trying to stick to the same sketchbook until it's over unless I REALLY need another type of paper for something. Except for comics, which exists in three sketchbooks for the possibility that I might want to work on three pages at once (it only happened like twice so far but oh well). Well, and honestly the (Nearly) Ten Sketchbooks system was born partly so I could grab an emptier one when going to some art meetup and avoid awkward questions and I'm so done with that, it shouldn't be MY problem. I've been doing this long enough to learn to deal with awkward questions (and yet, and yet).By now I'm ALMOST ready to start on the comics again but I also want to keep doodling, and there's some stuff I should just PRACTICE DRAWING, so it's going to be doodles with a chance of comics for now.
Anyway, stuff going on here, left to right, top to bottom:
- My last Inktober doodle after which I dropped the ball. And Chauncey's physio times. Hendon is a college for police training. I'm sure they have some lectures on appropriate conduct but Chauncey probably slept through that.
- Philip suggests that EVERY 5th of November (except those years he spent in places where they take such ideas seriously so it reflects on the time when you get out of those places).
- Drew Ghost Copper while waiting an email from work because it was Friday the 13th. It's basically a version of a scene in the old Chapter 1 (you don't have to doubt if if it goes in the new version).
- My second-to-the-last Inktober doodle, Mrs Jenkins and Ralph. Also what looks like the last autumn-themed doodle this season - it already snowed twice, shops already switched to commercializing winter holidays of your choice and I always thought of November as a grim depressing month. Particularly this year, pick any reason you can think of.
- Despite (or perhaps because) all that I got randomly hit by the urge of drawing something warm and cheerful so it's Kevin and his dad. This is the Kevin who lives in North London but I'm really tempted to keep his old Newton town version (with an entirely different background) as some sort of mysterious doppelganger because I don't have the heart to neither ditch him nor rename him. I'm still not sure how I'll explain the double Kevin effect but hey, we have ghosts! We have disability representation! I don't think anyone is even going to notice an extra Kevin wheeling around... Well, except for the people who just read this.
- A very rare occasion when I didn't feel the urge to ink something. I've been practising drawing Cord Cable more consistently and just liked how he looked in graphite pencil. Also I've been listening to way too much David Bowie lately.
- A new PCSO we've all been waiting for! Unfortunately she's still unnamed because I want a MARVELLOUS name for her and I can't pick yet (and she's not named in the scenes she's in so far anyway, so I have some time).
- A wild Bean appears again ! I think if Bean and Lucky became friends their mutual interests would rotate around the metaphysical conundrum of "if a fireman and a policeman had a fight, who would win". Unfortunately Bean and Lucky are not friends YET because while Lucky's mother uses the radical approach of letting her son watch telly in his room any time he's not in school that's not quite equipped for his needs, Bean's mother uses the radical approach of making her son a resident student at a local special school and taking him home as little as possible. So it's not like Lucky and Bean have many chances to meet.
- I'm naturally dying to tell you about how the new wild-haired PCSO gets on with her fellow PCSO Ace Trotley but I'll resist and LET YOU GUESS IF YOU WANT (but won't necessarily confirm or deny anything).

One thing I noticed with this one, there are some with borders and some without. Yet somehow, the one with Chauncey and Ghost Copper blends so seamlessly without a border that it's just amazing. I don't know but it's just so satisfying to see the compilation overall, too.
The looks of utter distaste is hilarious on Chauncey and Phillip, they've got their own twist to the expression. Oh Phillip. I don't know why that particular dialogue made me giggle as hard as I did. Sometimes you gotta do the tough stuff to get things done, but unfortunately not everybody would agree with you.
I'm absolutely loving the oranges you've put with the sketches with Mrs Jenkins and Ralph, Kevin and his dad, and Bean. You've managed to show so many degrees of warmth in all three of them, especially with the muted one in the second one. Also, I'm diggingΒ your pencil work, it's so really expressive.
Looking forward to seeing more of the new (currently unnamed) PCSO. I really like her design, she's got such a happy smile and she's got such soft and fluffy looking hair (like touchable fluffy).

Ehehe, I think you're the first one to notice (or at least mention) the borders! I think it looks more fun this way somehow, more like doodles and less like panels... It's a bit harder to do with my current sketchbooks since they are larger so less pages fit in one compilation (I'm trying to fill all sketchbooks I had started before starting any new ones, my system of nearly 10 sketchbooks in progress was getting ridiculous).
And yeaah, lots of grumpy people in this one (Philip would go into politics entirely for the violence)! And then lots of happy people too I guess... And thank you so much!
The new PCSO ended up being named Roddy May (I'm still not 100% certain on her surname since I realised I subconsciously picked it up from a book I was reading but she's definitely Roddy)! I'm sooo looking forward to drawing her more - augh, so many characters, never enough time for EVERYONE! And yeaaah, very fluffy hair (which is both fun to draw and hard to draw, depends on the day I guess)!

Unnecessary observations, at your service
Jeez, 10 sketchbooks in progress. That's really impressive. I can't even comprehend filling one out (I've noticed my lack of commitment with them, much like journal/diary writing as a kid).Β
As a particularly grumpy (and/or bitter, whichever fits that day) person, this speaks to me...sort of? But then you've always balanced the sort of personalities and whatnot, so it's all good.
She's got a pretty good name, well, as far as how nicely it sounds when you say it. Though whether it stays, is totally up for you, for all we know there are other names that could equally suit.

Meh, 10 sketchbooks was an annoying system - it was partly about convenience, partly about a lack of commitment (like you said!), and as a result I had sketchbooks with random drawings from the span of over a year instead of sketchbooks telling something about 2-3 months of my life. Speaking of journals/diaries, I used to do it on and off as a kid and rarely managed to fill one notebook too but I always kept some random notebook for writing ideas and lately I picked up journalling again - at first because multiple people told me it could be therapeutic, then it just clicked. It's a somewhat ridiculous activity but I think if anyone has at least some inclination to do it they should totally got for it, it's so fun in the long run. I mean it's not like my life is terribly exciting, it's more about having a place for randomness I can't fit into comics YET, and writing about rats, and something more low-key than drawing and without peer pressure of blogging.
Haha, yeaah, a lot of their grumpiness comes from my grumpiness... I'd like to be a sort of ridiculously cheery person but I can only be that way for a few hours per day at best.
I think the name is likely to stay!

Aw I really love the coloring in these! Β You've got a really lovely shading style... pencil, I think?? Β Or maybe pastels? Β I can't tell, but whatever it is really works

Thank you! It's watercolour pencils (and Derwent Coloursoft pencils, they are just really soft though they are still more pencils than pastels).

A lot of warmth and coziness in this one, but also people being displeased with the general state of things That's the kind of combination there can never be enough of. Also, always interesting to see your un-inked stuff. And the more I look at the new PCSO the more I like her.

I could never stick with a sketchbook. I always needed to switch to a new one after I was about half to three quarters of the way through (mostly, I think, because I really didn't like the stuff on the first few pages and really wanted the picture that people saw when they first flipped it open to be awesome.)
Though there's something very fulfilling about opening up a sketch book and having every single page filled...Β
π: 0 β©: 1
Oly-RRR In reply to the-art-of-B [2015-11-17 22:02:19 +0000 UTC]
I think for me the first 3 pages are always PRESSURE TO DO SOMETHING GOOD, then eventually I crack and dislike the sketchbook because of stuff that's in it but keep going and as soon as it gets over the half I start enjoying it and don't want to let go. At least that's how it was before the (Nearly) Ten Sketchbook system, but I want to return to the old way.
And be less of a perfectionist about it - that's a hard one. I used to think it's because I like hardcover sketchbooks so those seem too pricey to mess about but I see these insecurities in most artists our age no matter what kind of sketchbooks they use (it's either that or drawing stick figure in Moleskines, I honestly don't know which is worse because at least the second group is happy?) so I guess it's just self-esteem issues. But I really like sketchbooks that have occasionally scribbles and notes and surprising stuff like that, and mine are 95% what you see uploaded here because I can WRITE in composition notebooks and cheaper stuff like that.
Someone I know leaves the first page blank (and I think sometimes fills it later) precisely for the reasons you describe but I can't do that - I can skip between sketchbooks but within sketchbooks it has to be strictly chronological (partly because I use a lot of media that bleeds through the page and while I put random papers under the page I colour it would still suck to fill pages out of order and ruin something I actually like.
And yeah! I could never stick to ANY sketchbooks before uni but by now I have like two boxes of the, I don't like ALL of then, and obviously I see tons of flaws in older art but sometimes it's nice to revisit them. I know I'll love going back to the Inktober one, because the beginning of it is more random but most of it is almost like a visual journal (except with Cop Story characters, I don't think I could stick with a visual journal with ME in it, I just find that boring when it comes to myself).
Textwall of a reply, haha, sorry. Oh, and it's something I always miss with digital art, though if you draw long enough you can have FOLDERS. My digital archive is a mess, I can't do that huge 10 year improvement meme because of what a mess it is, I'll first have to spend like two days sorting through old crap on the removable drive and resisting the urge to delete most of it.

The more I look at your colours and all the texturing you put into fabric wrinkles and patterns and movement of people's bodies, the more I feel the demand for a tutorial! Mysterious new PCSO with the wild hair just needs to be drawn running down a wind tunnel so her magnificent mane billows about her *plays the themetune to "The Bill"*
She looks like a Janet to me, but that's not MARVELLOUS enough a name! (Sorry to all Janets out there)

Oly-RRR In reply to Sleyf [2015-11-17 13:28:32 +0000 UTC]
I wish I could do a tutorial but every time I consider one it seems that all I can say and show is very obvious, like observing how people move irl and in live action, and thinking what you should or shouldn't exaggerate depending on style. With fabric I'm still not sure I'm getting it right myself because different materials fold differently and I know at some point I didn't show that enough. As for textures, that's just playing around - textures on Mrs Jenkins and Ralph's clothes are hand-drawn, swirly stuff on wallpaper behind Kevin & dad is stamped by those felt-tips for kids that have a regularly-shaped tip on one side and some shape on the other (I got mine in Ikea a few years ago, surprisingly they are still alive), and Bean's blanket is a piece of patterned paper I glued in and coloured over (the flowers were white).
And thanks!
Hehe, Janet IS a good name but yeah, I'm not sure she is one.

Yeah I can understand that, much of it is self explanatory and putting how you colour down in words is sort of...well "colour inside the lines". It is interesting to hear about the different materials you use, the felt-tip stamper pens (wow, remember when you could get them in Weetos?) i haven't seen those in years!Β And wow, the use of patterned paper, that's clever

Thanks! I type text in comics mostly because it's faster but generally when I "see" speech like that - multicoloured and different sizes. I'll probably try to experiment with it more from now on, we've been bugged by some differences between my random doodles and actual comics. I don't want to hand-letter comics because it's too much work for me (I used to do it, I know) but I guess a combination of three or so fonts might do the job (I'll probably keep the one I'm using in comics now as one of them, it's not too bad and it'd be be a bummer replacing it everywhere).

I mostly fiddle with it until it feels right, really. And I've been doing it for a long time (longer than digital). Now the trick is to bring digital colouring closer to that, I feel that it's not spontaneous enough or something.
