Description So a while ago I thought that one of prompts in Thought-Up was a perfect excuse to figure out Roddy's family, but I was also trying to draw other families and had some deadlines coming up and just decided not to rush it so... better late than never?

In case you don't remember who Roddy is, she's the PCSO with awesome hair:

It's kind of like when you dig up a box with old family photos and feel awkward when you realise you can't recognize half the people in them, only in Roddy's family it's more complicated because you can't even find the box with photos, in fact you're probably not in the same room with the box with the photos in the first place.

Anyway, long story short:
Roddy is the one with the glasses and bushy hair. She likes policing and pizza and dogs AND cats and has a growing dislike for her colleague PCSO Ace Trotley (not pictured here and not involved in any of it), her mother and complicated situations.
Her mother called Josie, she's the one with varying hairdo and strict expression. She likes not being single and doesn't like mess in the kitchen, pet hair on clothes and probably complicated situations as well, which is why at some point she sent her oldest kid Adrian to live in a home and conveniently 'forgot' to mention him to every family member that followed later (to give credit where credit is due she still visits him).
Adrian is the one in the opposite corner from Roddy, he likes fish, something new happening, does not like water and flashing lights on tv and does not give a toss about complicated situations.
The kid with a picture of a cat is Josie's youngest daughter Leila ("Squirt" for short), the actual cat is a neurotic family pet called Masterpiece ("Cat" for short). They are blissfully unaware of ...stuff.
Now everyone who's left to figure out is the stack of past and present husbands and boyfriends. The one with the poodle is Adrian's dad and it's not clear if he ditched Josie or Josie ditched him and at which point (Roddy knows him only as "the bloke with the poodle"). The uh, elbow and leg is Roddy's father which about represents his involvement in Roddy's life (and he's probably the one to blame for her name, though Roddy blames Josie). Then eventually Joe (the bald bloke) happened - he's Leila's father and Roddy has been expecting him to go out of the picture before Leila was born but somehow he didn't do it yet. Fortune favours the bald?

Roddy is glad to be out of the house and generally side-eyes her mother while trying to make sense out of it all.

This... probably explains something about my writing process, I think "I could use another PCSO in the story" but that PCSO has to arrive with friends and relations, who connect it to other people and other arcs and... the more the merrier? It's just how it is. Kind of how I can't resist from using traditional media for over a week. But hey, it's fun!

I notice I've been drawing a lot of papers and family portraits lately...

I'm so delayed in commenting on this

Roddy does have awesome hair
To be fair pet hair on things is really horrible.Β  It is slightly mean that Josie did not mention Adrian, although one redeeming things is she does visit, though I'm not sure if that is redeeming or not, I guess she had her reasons.Β  Adrian kind of has the expression to match 'I don't give a toss' about complicated situations
*groans at your bald pun*
Your family portraits are great!Β  Josie's hair in that one picture with poodle-man though...a style she would like to forget methinks
Masterpiece looks bemused by everything but I'm glad there is an obligatory pet photo - usually in very poor focus or exposure with the animal looking stunned
I love Leila's photo
You know...Roddy's photo in the pokemon sweater kind of put me in mind of this one awful photo I once had...in a polarbear sweater (it has since been shredded up...the photo not the sweater, I loved that sweater)

No worries, I understand that comment mood is not always there, I'm like that myself!

Haha, I don't mind pet hair on things (except the scanner) buuut I'm one of those annoying people who gushes over most pets when visiting other people, doesn't mind drool and other mess and disapproves of visitors not expressing the appropriate amount of adoration when it comes to my own pets. If you don't want to meet and greet my babies (and let them do the same) I'll side-eye you!

I TRY TO INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE BAD PUN PER UPLOAD

Yeaaah, Josie would probably pretend the 80s didn't happen if it wasn't for the photographic evidence. But then it's exactly what she does with Adrian, pretending he doesn't exist when it comes to the outside world.

I think I like drawing that sort of "photo" stuff precisely because it's like artistic license to draw everyone as awkward as it gets - we all have bad photos, and photos we feel bad about that aren't that bad and so on! I kind of want to see your polar bear sweater now, it sounds awesome (I like clothes with pictures/patterns on them)!

Ooh, intriguing! I always wanted more Roddy... and not just because she has awesome hair... but thats a pretty DAMN good reason too! She hair reminds me of my grandma (mothers side) her black hair was really curly and went into that big round style too. Roddy's glasses get more vibrant every time she appears. Maybe they are connected to her emotions like a mood stone!? O__O

Oh and Roddy is looking seriously geek chic right there, girl!Β  Will you ever bring Roddy's dad into the picture? Does Adrian currently cross paths with any of your other characters? Cockburn (name-subject-to-change) for example?

Is that a BEEHIVE, Josie?

I wanted to draw them all for a while, I was just going back and forth on details! And haha, I'm still figuring out how I want to colour glasses (maybe Roddy just has a couple of different ones)! And big curly hair is SO COOL, I wish my hair did that sort of stuff (it has some life of its own but not to THAT degree)!

I do plan to bring up Roddy's dad at some point, it just won't be any time soon (and I'm giving myself more time to figure him out, including his skin colour MOAR MULTIRACIAL FAMILIES IN STORIES ...even if they are totally divorced and dysfunctional families). I can't DEFINITELY say that Adrian won't come across anyone from the school (it's a small world, especially if you're disabled) but for now he is mostly in the care home arc which I kept pondering on a while ago but never really did much with. (Also if if things went differently and Adrian was raised with his siblings it would be "RODDY AND ADDY" and they would be on really good terms and it makes me sad.)

The 80s were a baaaad time for hair. In that so-bad-its-good way

I wish my hair was bigger tooΒ Β  (mine is really frizzy but fairly straight). My boyfriend's hair IS like that (it grows up not down) but it doesn't look nearly as cool as Roddys and goes out of control easily XD

YES, multiracial families is awesome!Β  Roddy and her sister's skin looks a lot like their mother so it seems unlikely their father would be very pale. There's no guarantee but mostly mixed skin ends up looking kinda in-between both parents (that certainly happened with me and my sister and I've known other mixed families). So if that were the case, I'd expect at least one of the kids to be a bit paler though. Of course, maybe her dad could still have dark skill and be another race...hmm?

Stiiill, hair growing up is awesome! WHO NEEDS TO CONTROL HAIR ANYWAY

I'll keep that in mind! Roddy's dad is still mostly an unknown entity - I have some plans for him but it won't happen soon... *spends ages inking a doubledecker*

aw, leila why i could just pinch her cheek! she's so cute!

i am kinda sad that i can't pick the photo's up because i'm a little bit of a snoop and i want to see what roddy's dad looks like! very clever to cover him up like that!Β

i like your writing process! definitelyΒ the more the merrier! and it's kinda like that whole six desgrees of separation deal!

Aww! She totally uses that to get her way, though not quite consciously yet!

I was thinking at some point I should do an actual collage with physical paper instead of drawing paper buuut you wouldn't be able to pick it up then anyway! I think I'll draw him eventually, at least the way I see the story now!

And thank you! Yeah, pretty much, six degrees of separation is a good way to put it!

The photo of Leila really stands out for some reason- she seems like a properly nice kid. Does she get to spend much time with Roddy and any time with Adrian at all?
(THAT CAT though ) Β

She is a nice kid, yes (which doesn't mean she can't be destructive or annoying but this is what children and pets are all good at)! She spends time with Roddy on a regular basis (Roddy mostly visits, and and they go for walks but but not for surveillance jobs on boats like certain adults we can think of) and has no clue of Adrian existing. Adrian has no clue Leila exists so... it's mutual I guess? They'd probably get along better than with Roddy.

Cats are SO HARD TO DRAW - I mean when trying to get their crazy expressions right!

Masterpiece is an absolutely fantastic name for a cat. A character's pet can tell you so much about them! BEAUTIFUL work as always!Β

Thank you! It came to me when I was colouring this and then later I tried to think of other names BUT IT JUST STUCK.
