Description
Well it's been a long week. A long week without my MP-E 65mm Canon macro lens. Without a doubt, I knew it was defective so I had to send it back. Today it finally returned and I immediately see the difference in quality. For my first shot with my reuniting beauty, I found this Junebug peaking over a leaf very still. I decided it would be a good time to practice focus stacking since I feel I need more practice with it. Although the result came out nice, I should have been less lazy and just gotten my tripod and focus rail..but I was worried she'd fly away so I didn't want to risk losing the shot.Anywho, I never took the time to look closely at Junebugs because their flight "patterns" freak me out. They fly all crazy like hitting walls and the floor break dancing and stuff. Their unpredictability is the thing that freaks me out. This one though, very calm. I liked her so much I called her Lola. She has pretty eyelashes and bright brownish skin. Moments after I took a few pictures, Lola flew off. I'll never forget Lola...she was the only Junebug I ever liked....

She flew up the leaf, and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name, and in deep bug-buzz
She said, "Lo-la! L-O-L-A Lo-la!". . et cetera
with apologies to Ray Davies. . .

Very cute, and that's something you don't say infact about a bug, but that's the way this ones looks at you

Same here! As far as I was concerned, they were just as bad as flying roaches! Not anymore though, they're much...prettier

Hummm, is it possible? Did they evolve so quickly? Or is it just your way of seeing them that changed?

Just my way of seeing them. Roaches were my most hated insect when I was younger, so seeing a bug that visually looked like a smaller type of roach only fueled my hate for them even more. As far as I was concerned, every bug was disgusting. If I ever saw one, i gave it no mercy and just killed it. Be it a spider, fly, june bug, or anything else....
Eventually though, as I discovered photography, then macro photography, I couldn't help but see a certain quality of life in their eyes as I started to photograph them...something I never saw before or took the time to see. I could see character within each one, a unique soul within each creature. My eyes were now wide open and I no longer saw them as mindless spawns. Each one of them felt like a unique person, like you and I. Upon realizing this, I felt a little guilty for all of the bugs I've purposely killed in the past.
So now as a photographer, I try to incorporate that into my photography. I want the viewer to see the vulnerability and the soul of an animal or insect. I want the viewer to look into their eyes and see that they're as gentle as you and I, and that they're unique, also like you and I.
There's nothing to be afraid of...usually

well, I still can't stand roaches and most insects, even though when I see macro photographs of them I really appreciate their beauty. Maybe because when I was a child I used to spend holidays in a village in the middle of a valley surrounded by forests, where you could find a lot of those little beings, and just began hating them. Anyway, there are a lot of points of view, each one as valid as the others.

I forgot to mention, I still hate Roaches as well haha. Something about a roach just...ugh. KILL IT!
It's the only creature I will probably never photograph..I'd rather it be dead =/.

Haha they do look like they break dance when they land on a slippery floor like in the kitchen or something, they can't get up. That's an awesome shot, I catch these when they come around, I like their interesting antennae.
