A prequel to the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood series, before the Elric Brothers, and before the Coup of Brigs.

Years after the genocide of his homeland Xerxes, slave turned alchemist Van Hoenheim walks the earth alone and immortal, cursed by the deaths that rest inside his very being forever.

The wretched entity responsible, a homunculous now calling himself "Father" makes plans on the other side of the Earth in a new country called Amestris to make a grander more devastating ritual that will result in more lives being lost, and Van Hoenheim begins on a near fools errand to try to counter act it, years in advance withou being discovered.

But when Van Hoenheim inadvertently rescues a young Xingise girl from a corrupt Prince, he begins to wonder if he can find redemption as he is caught up in a power struggle that COULD rip the East apart. A young missionary woman named Trisha, and a fellow alchemist named Izumi unfold a way to help Hoenheim actually heal the land, and Hoenheim hopes to dare at a life where he can be happy again.

Suddenly ghost of his past haunt him again, and new Homunculous' spring up wreaking havoc across the world. When a lost warrior of Ishval tells Hoenheim of Father's pre-world scale plot, Hohenheim decides whether he should risk failing again, and fail the world in a plan to ridiculous to accomplish, but to important not to try in....the Circle of Souls.
