This is a look at Sienna Khan and Ironwood before Volume 1 even , hinting they knew each other before all this...before she was Queen of the Fang, and him a General of Atlas.

The idea is she was a warrior/political speaker from Vacuo where race isn't a huge thing, but what is "is if you can survive out there, you're one of them." - Qrow Branwen

She came over during their union with Vale in re-establishing Faunus there, as a hope of bridging the gap between Faunus and human relations, particularly for Atlas commerce as she was a respected huntress and war hero. And the "extremist movement" of the White Fang was resolute to stop this. Having her there could smooth things out more.

But in doing so, she saw how even though they were given equality on paper, in reality it was sparse at best, and the island home they were given small pickings in compensation.

She met many a hypocritical or racist human Major from Atlas or Haven, but one who seemed to actually walk the talk was James Ironwood.

He she often argued with her but would come to a mutual understanding and recognition; neither wanted aimless bloodshed.

She believed if more officials were like him there wouldn't be as many problems meeting in the middle.

The more they disagreed the more they found common ground, and the more they found common ground the more they parted ways in opinion. All the same they recognized each other's intentions as genuine.

He defended her a number of times, which she resented at first and barked at him for, accusing him of thinking her incapable of standing up for herself, while he said it wasn't about that, it was about standing for what one should, and about honor.

Ironwood and her saw to the peace accords of the Mistralize Faunus and humans and in doing so fought off many a grimm and bandit attack, many bandits of which Sienna suspected to have been paid off by the Haven humans to see to it that the accords did not take place. While Ironwoods superiors suspected it was Faunus; notably the White Fang.

Finally it came time to move the accords to Vacuo, and during that time Ironwood saved Sienna from a Grimm attack and she saved him in turn just as narrowly; closely losing life and limb. That night at camp they... worked off that energy. And although both said "It could never happen again..." it did, several times between then and the summit.

When speaking to Ghira Belladonna, he is at a cross roads because he wants to be a respected and strong figure for the Faunus community, but on the other hand has a baby on the way and has been receiving death threats against not just him but his wife.

In light of this, Sienna suggests because Haven is looking for a positive influence as the Governor of the island of Menagerie, Sienna suggests she take the reigns of the White Fang as it's chief, and he could be put to good use for the cause as the Island's chief.

He'd always known she was of the opinion that if he wanted to make real change he'd have to show them that Faunus were strong as these men were bullies, and some bullies only speak the language of fear and strength, (her Vacuo upbringing). And honestly, maybe she was right, and maybe he would've been more firm and fierce as a leader. But now he had his wife and child to think of, and could better be served being a figure head for Faunus who wanted a new start.

We fast forward to a few years later to this picture. Sienna is the Queen of the White Fang , Ironwood is a General. Both have come lead what the other is vowed to take down...but, old embers, keep their wick sometimes.
