After searching around randomly for over a month, I finally found the hidden pitfall!!
they are traps that spawn randomly on your town map each day (provided you tripped on it/or dug it out with a shovel the day before)
This never happened before lol! I like looking for them each day and somehow this one eluded me for so long...because it was in the very corner of my town, behind some flowers and trees, and no amount of adjusting the camera view showed a trace of it on the ground (pitfalls are marked by an X)
anyway, here's a lil comic showing mayor onisuu's feelings about the pitfall XD

i like setting the time where everyones asleep and digging them up and put them in frout of villagers that i dont likes house and watch them fall in in the morning

You know, I've found out how you can avoid that problem - bury multiple pitfalls on the beach. It actually prevents from the pitfall from spawning anywhere else in town. Threw all mine into a spot on the beach where none of the villagers seem to go and haven't seen one spawn randomly since then.
