Description
I'll be honest, I had no intention of making a tutorial today. Then I learned a new way to create a brush in GIMP and simply HAD to share.
I've read quite a few people complaining about that annoying little window that occasionally pops up when they try to save a brush they made. This method is much more simple, in my opinion.

Thank you for checking it out!
I've noticed that there aren't a whole lot of tutorials that teaches the basics (like this). Thing is, those just getting into Gimp NEED to know these basics. Just because someone thinks it's "common sense" to know these things (yes, I have read someone say that on a GIMP board) doesn't mean someone just getting started in Gimp is gonna pick up on it. I've been using Gimp for years and didn't know about this method until about 30 minutes before I made this tutorial.
I have plans to make many more. I'm compiling them for a book I'm working on. If there are any tutorials you'd like me to make, feel free to ask!

Huzzah! The more documentation the better! Awesome idea the book! Please keep me posted.
That's the only real weakness with Open Source programs. They can pretty well do as much as the commercial programs, it's just finding out how that can be a pain at times.
I found one good place to get info on open source programs is Linuxtopia [link]
They have a really good manual on Blender too for those who are interested in 3D. So, if you want to pass the link on, there it is.
Are you planning on selling the book or is it going to be a free resource? Just thought I'd ask, cause if you want to sell it I have a link I'll give you just in case. It's "Self Publishing Like A Rockstar [link] It's a panel discussion by a group of successful web comic authors. And while it's aimed primarily at comic creators, it is useful for anyone who self publishes. Don't know if you need the info, but, I thought I'd pass it on just in case.
On tuts I'd like to see. Hm...anything on quick and dirty comic book style coloring. I've tried a ton of different methods, and none of the ones I've tried work that well for me. Most of them are a bit clunky. I've even used Pencil (2D traditional animation program) in desperation for coloring. But, most of the time, I simply use MyPaint (what I work in primarily) and use a delayed brush to paint it in by hand. It's a bit tedious, but, not as much as having Gimp crash because of a plugin issue.
Sorry if I overloaded you with info, I was just trying to be helpful. Have a good one!

Not at all, thanks so much!
I actually am planning on selling it. Trouble is getting it started. You need a good opening to keep the reader interested.
As far as the comic goes, I'll see what I can do. I've seen other's examples and it's just too awesome.
GIMP is a fantastic program, even more so when you learn the ends and outs. To me, it's BETTER the PS, and not only because it's free... It's a lot more simple and easier to understand.

Welcome!
Cool, go for it!
I agree. Not only is Gimp free, simpler, and easier to understand, but also it is customizable. You can set it up for the way you work, not the way some corporate software engineer tells you you have to work. And I absolutely HATE the way PS handles brushes.
Gimp is a fantastic program. And when you use it with MyPaint you can do pretty much what commercial suites like Manga Studio and Painter can do and more.
Seriously, if you haven't tried MyPaint yet for sketching and lineart, I would like to recommend it. It comes with a ton of brushes, and you can download more. One of the things I love about it is that you control the brushes. I've fiddled with the brush settings and have gotten all sorts of neat effects. (like brushes that can draw perfect comic style registers, or that can do fur) All by simply moving a few sliders. I've tried about everything on the market including Corel X4, Painter, Manga Studio, Photoshop, and Paint Tool SAI. I always go back to MyPaint for my drawing and sketching.
Sorry to gush, but, I love MyPaint just as much as Gimp.

crap... I made my first brush, but it won't change color! I have it set as grayscale and fill with background color. i need to cut a portion of the image for the final brush(it is a simple square cut) but when it's in grayscale, the original color of the image is gone, and replaced with grey colors. Also, can you tell me how to save it in it's original color? I want to have 2 brushes: one that is able to change color, and one that is a set color. Can you please explain what I did wrong? I followed your new saving method...

Ok, are you opening a new file immediately after messing with the brush? If so, the new file will automatically open in Greyscale.
I was working on a brush tutorial and decided to try out the new brush I had just made. Opened a new file and it was painting black no matter what color I had. I then realized it was set to greyscale. Make sure to change the new file to RBG mode. Only thing I could think of to help.

Well i figured it out. Can I make a tut on it? I've been wanting to make a tut, and I finally found something to make a tut on! I figured out how to make it any color I want! Can I be the one to make a tut on it? If you say yes, I'll give you special mention, AND tell you how to do it ahead of time. Sound good?

okay. Any tips on how to put it together? I can take the screen-shots easy, lol, and I know how to enter text in GIMP. Am I missing anything, besides the proportions of the canvas in GIMP? Btw, I just uploaded my first brush pack! Here they are!: [link] Tell me what you think!

What helped me was making a template. There are countless ways to put a tutorial together. What I did was look around and figure out which way worked best for me.
Actually, I'll post my template here. It may help.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like yours is a basic how to, while mine focuses on making a specific brush.
If it's done, go ahead and post it. I'll take a look and see if their are any big similarities.

If you use windows the link I provided, will explain how to create a zip file so you can upload your brushes to
There are other ways to make zip files. I use a program called, "7-Zip" to create zip files to upload stuff to ... Here's the link to download the free version of "7-Zip"... [link]
In addition to this zip file you'll need to create a preview image for the zip file that contains your brushes.
