Description This is the first picture I have ever done of Anne as she first appeared in my fiction.

Anne lost her right arm when she got in the way of the removals truck when her family were shifting home. She's sitting in reception of the hospital where she's just had her prosthetic fitted, while her father deals with the paperwork. She isn't particularly impressed with the awkward, ugly thing that is supposed to be a substitute for her real arm.

The wheelchair? Standard hospital policy - patients get wheeled in and out in wheelchairs. They are easier to control that way, and are less likely to "trip and sue".

And now for the rant:
Do not assume that just because this is rendered in a 3D package that it was "easy". I have been working on this for 2 days. I've seen some arrogant "artists" say "is this real or just some 3D render". I would like to point out that they probably use Photoshop, and quite frankly, the art produced in Photoshop isn't "real" either, in the sense that there is no physical medium. Pencil, paint, Photoshop, Poser, Daz, whatever - they are ALL merely tools for the artist to express themselves. There is no way I could produce a picture of this quality with a lesser tool than Daz and the various models available for it. Does it matter that Anne can be purchased as Salome? Not at all. It's not like my mind had a clear picture of what Anne looked like, nor is it evident from my drawings and paintings that I have any hope of drawing her consistently either. I haven't seen the REAL Anne who inspired this character in 37 years.

A nice piece and I can fully appreciate the work that went into it having tried Poser a few years ago. I keep promising myself that I'll try the new software as there are similar things I'd like to do but I guess it might never happen. So my hat is off to you, two days you said hmm I guess it might take me two weeks but we live in a world of instant gratification. How long did it take an 'old master' to do a painting? Weeks, months?

Love her maryjanes.

It's been a while! I find DAZ Studio a lot easier to use than Poser, so that might give you a head start in the right direction.

A stunning piece of art all your work really paid off
As for your rant all I can say is "Well said", as a digital artist I hear too often "But it's not real art".
I have painted and drawn for over 40 years, now my hands just can't 3D is a wonderful medium, just as all the standard ones

Very nice work. I certainly am the first to agree with you, 3d art is NOT a "slam dunk" cut and paste type of operation. (well, it CAN be.. the number of "ooh, look, a naked woman with a pose and no background" pictures on annoys me sometimes, hehe).

Good arrangement of scene and (for D/S) good lighting. I used to work a lot in D/S, started bout a year and a half ago... These days I use Poser 7, but the same principles apply. Lots of time arranging poses, camera angles, lighting, and my particular specialty - working over the textures. My runtime takes up about 1/3rd of my hard drive, and I'm constantly looking for little things to slip into scenes here and there.

Well done!

My hard drive has the same problem! Actually, the drive is near half full of Runtime. The second drive has the art etc.. There was an amusing thread on the DAZ forum about "Naked Vicki in a Temple with a Sword" being all too common a rendered theme! I think I'll be different and render "Dressed girl in interesting situation with background" I'll happily spend several days making the sets.

Yeah, I saw your "Clothed elf in a tavern with candles" deviation. Figured that was the pun.

Yes, that was from the same thread. XX XX in a XX with XX was the theme, and the Vicki quote the response. The Naked Sword in a Victoria with Temple was an interesting render though!

Very cool picture.
It’s nice to see something a little different than the usual beautiful perfect looking woman.

I agree about the digital art thing. Some people don’t consider digital art as true art since we didn’t actually paint, draw or make the figures in the picture. I consider digital art more like shooting a photo or filming a movie. You select the models, dress them, pose them, add a set with background and props, light the scene and of course position your camera.

It takes an artist to be able to use 3D software effectively too. I've seen renders by people without any artistic skill, and the results are quite unnatural looking. Good on them for trying though, and I hope they are having fun doing it.

That’s true. I just hope those who watch those people tell them truthfully on how their picture looks and gives them suggestions to make it better. That’s the cool thing I love about DAZ Studio, its free. So anyone who is curious about getting into digital art can give it a try without paying a lot of money.

I got into the 3D thing when I found a link to DAZ here on DA back in April, and thought "Why not try it?" That was an expensive free program! You should see the size of my Runtime library now! I've run out of interesting things to buy at DAZ.

Is it longer than this? [link]
Thats just what I picked (free and bought) up from DAZ and doesn't include all the freebies I got from other sites.

I don't know if its longer or not. 4 printed pages of fine print, not including the freebies. Needless to say, it appears we are addicts of similar magnitude!

MrE1967 In reply to otherunicorn [2007-07-30 01:26:28 +0000 UTC]

It is like an addiction of sorts isn't it?.

I'd go as far as saying it IS an addiction. At least it's a legal one The person who titled the club as Aiko and Hiro Addicts wasn't making a joke!

How true. It doesn’t sink in until you really think of the β€œaddict” part and look at all the stuff you have for making digital art pictures. Its really hard to stop getting everything you see and want.

It gets worse than that. When you can't find anything new, you hunt around all the site hoping to find something else you may have missed! I'ts a good thing I seem to be rendering an epic!

I know how that is. I have gone through the Platinum Club selection a few times looking for something that I might think I need whether I actually do need it or not.

Perhaps I can just do some pictures of Anne from the Unicorn's Forest as an amputee - unicorn form included! (Aren't unicorn horns supposed to heal?? Well... not always, I guess.)
